Game Day Open Thread: Week 16 -- Chargers at Seahawks

San Diego
Chargers

(12-2)
at Seattle
Seahawks

(8-6)

Sunday, December 24, 1:15pm PT
Qwest Field
TV: CBS

The best team in the AFC, featuring this season's prohibitive-favorite MVP, rolls into town.

The Seahawks clinch their third straight NFC West title with a win in this game, or a 49er loss. You too can clinch the NFC West if you just sign a waiver of liability and keep your receipts.

Well -- anything can happen, I guess. I'll be at Qwest Field this afternoon to identify the bodies, so please keep our support group going in the open thread. Check out John Morgan's preview. Scruffy's injury report displayed within.

P.S.
May not be doing a game recap afterwards, because of the holiday and social/family stuff. If I do write a recap tonight, it probably won't be that extensive.

Especially if the Chargers win.

Great opening drive
3rd and 1? Why don't we just call it 3rd and inifinity.

expectations
I've found today that if you learn not to expect the Seahawks to score and instead expect them to screw up, your expectations are more likely to be fulfilled.  For instance, I expected a turnover when the Seahawks drove down the field with the last possession, and sure enough, San Diego got that interception, and I laughed.

Yeah-
I feel more comfortable anyway, returning to my usual Seattle-fan state, expecting my team to fail

new stat category
Someone needs to count the number of almost-interceptions the Seahawk defense has had this season.  I bet it's incredible.

Hey, it's Officer Wee Man!

This game
is starting to look very similiar to the SF game. Fuck.

On the bright side: Arizona 20 - SF 3

by CecilEltz @ Field Gulls on Dec 24, 2006 2:17 PM PST reply actions

THERE you go
Those plays ALWAYS happen on the FIRST plays of drives to the Seahawk defense, and there you have it, Tomlinson goes nuts.
Sports and Bremertonians. Because we can.

by wackomann on Dec 24, 2006 2:17 PM PST reply actions

yup.
The other Jackson.  Ran from one sideline to the other in the end zone.  That's embarrassing.

...and that probably puts the Seahawks away right there.  I wouldn't be surprised if the team quit after that 62-yard Tomlinson run.  It'd be like them to do that, or at least it seems like it this season.

Sports and Bremertonians. Because we can.

I wonder
how we're going to turn the ball over here.

still watching...
...but only for sadistic purposes.  I don't think this second Hart interception's getting overturned.

I can see the future
And its telling me that the 12th Man's memoriable goat of the game goes to:

Matt Hasslebeck.

we might as well
just start trying field goal attempts the instant we cross the 35 yard line

homers
The hilarious thing was that Raible and Moon on the radio immediately thought the interception would be overturned.  I don't know if they're trying to keep the listeners' hopes up or what.
Sports and Bremertonians. Because we can.

by wackomann on Dec 24, 2006 2:40 PM PST reply actions

wow.
This team sucks.  I just know if the offense manages to get a touchdown, that's when the defense will let up and the Chargers will march down the field.

Just brutal.  Not enough for me to want San Francisco to come back and beat Arizona, but still brutal.

Sports and Bremertonians. Because we can.

OH FUCK
Somethings up with Leinart. Warner is now in.

This does not bode well for our playoff hopes.

by CecilEltz @ Field Gulls on Dec 24, 2006 2:49 PM PST reply actions

Update:
The only bad news for the Cards in the half came when Leinart left the field with an injured shoulder. His return is questionable.

Yeesh.

hmmph.
The division is theirs, but this win isn't a win until 0:00 shows on the clock.  The Chargers have 5:07 left with two timeouts and the two-minute warning to get to the end zone.

story of the season.
I'd say that was amazing, but it's not amazing.

It's expected.

Throw it in reverse, they've backed into the division title.

Why'd the Seahawks blow that timeout before the two-minute warning again?
Sports and Bremertonians. Because we can.

by wackomann on Dec 24, 2006 4:36 PM PST reply actions

I hate this loss
and I also dont like the fact that we won this divison by the cardinals dry humping the 49ers.

by CecilEltz @ Field Gulls on Dec 24, 2006 4:36 PM PST reply actions

Roid Rage Merriman
Has 3 sacks for the day. I'm sure he'll have a lot to tell Canseco and Bonds when he gets back to California.

by MFAN on Dec 24, 2006 4:41 PM PST reply actions

why would it be otherwise?
It wasn't going to be a Seahawk win until the clock showed zeroes.  Usually, there might have been some moments in the fourth quarter when I might have felt good about this team.  Not today.

Who's ready for a January of one-and-done Seahawk playoff football?  It'd be the third time in four years, you know.

Sports and Bremertonians. Because we can.

by wackomann on Dec 24, 2006 4:41 PM PST reply actions

Hawks have a home playoff game, they lost, but we looked good. We at least have a chance of not being one and done.

don't remind me of that.

That was ridiculous. Everything should be challengable, then the "you only get two coach's challenges" rule makes sense.
