Deion Branch = Seahawk

Espn is reporting that we traded a 1st round pick for Deion Branch.

I'm curious who gets cut to open up space for him?

This is great news, though a 1st rounder is pretty heavy. If the offensive line can give Hasselbeck some time to throw, then we should be pretty fearsome.

YESSSSSSSSSS
WOOOO WOOOOOOO

I would definitely do this deal for a first rounder - he is definitely worth a late round pick. Great job Ruskell!

I posted this over in the game recap thread
but I think it should be mentioned over here as well.

I haven't decided whether I like this or not. I feel sorry for Bobby Engram.

However, football is all about getting better, and a Branch/Burleson/Jackson trio looks better than a Burleson/Jackson/Engram trio.

Deion Branch is a good receiver, but he's not a game-breaker. Giving up a first round pick only makes sense if the Seahawks have a very successful year and end up drafting near the bottom of the 1st round.

The dice has been rolled, and we'll have to wait and see how it turns out. If (and this is a big "if") the Seahawks founder in the oft-mentioned Super Bowl hangover and end up drafting in the middle of the 1st round, I'm not sure this trade makes much sense.

Yay
I love this deal for 2 reasons.
  1.  This spreads the defense out even more which means we can get help into our LG and provides less pressure on whomever is our TE.
  2.  He knows comes onto my Madden team.

I will stay reserved about this trade
until Branch plays

If it plays out right and we rotate the recievers and everyone gets touches and stays happy then its a good move.

But this could be disastrous if Branch isn't as good of a club house guy as they say he is. Or if someone like Engram, Burleson or Jackson takes offense to this pickup.

Recievers are the drama queens of the NFL. So I am a tad bit worried

I like it
The fact is, we are in a win-now moment.  Our current window has maybe a couple more years left, and in that space of time Branch likely to benefit us much more than a late first-round pick.

This was a good move.

I have being hearing this a lot recently
and take no offense to this please.  But why are we in a win now?  I mean we are going to win now yes, but we are also not in cap hell, let alone an old team.  I don't see anyone outside of Shaun whose production will go down dramatically with age.  I think we are in a good spot now with still loads of cap room after Branch.  Young at all positions in depth.  I think the Hawks are set up nicely for now and for the future.  I see this trade also helping out now and in the future as I think Engram will not be with the team anymore after this season which would move Jackson to the slot.  Again this is not an attack on you at all, I am just being curious.

Age
Matt Hasselbeck is (soon-to-be) 31
Shaun Alexander is 29
Mack Strong is 35
Bobby Engram is 33
Walter Jones is 32
Grant Wistrom is 30

Those are a lot of premium positions on the wrong side of their career.

I guess my open to debate question is
what defines a move as win now?  Bobby and Grant don't worry me too much as we have Hackett, Obomanu (my bet for our slot receiver of the future), and Mr. Tapp as fill ins with relative drop off when they do decide to hang it up.  I guess I just being an optimist when I see Matt not leaving for a while.  Shaun, being easily replacable when we DO decide to replace him.  When Mack leaves I will worry, but I am very fond of Kirtman. Walter is the only one I see us not ready for.  But then again he is 32.

I just don't see the need for the pessimism.

Win now
means where built to win this season. Doesn't mean where sacrificing the future to do so.

Where not building a baseball team. Football you can 4-12 on year and through FA be 12-4 the next year

Don't get me wrong
I very much think that the difference between the Ruskell-era Hawks and those before is that we stand a chance of being a consistently good franchise, rather than consistently mediocre.

However, as phildopip points out, some of our key players are on the other side of 30.  You're right in that, except for Matt and Walter, they're all pretty much replaceable (though those two are big), but even so we should expect a little rebuilding time when they turnover.

I think the distance between windows will be smaller than ever before with this franchise, and I'm confident our days of averaging 8 wins year in and year out are over.  But right now, and for the next couple seasons, we have a chance to win a championship.  In a potential championship season, I think it's a good move to give up a low 1st-round pick for a player who clearly makes us a better team.

I have the Seahawks
in an xbox live league and this move made me happy as it is easy to get an opponenet doinked when you keep runnin 4 wide or 5 wide as everyone online loves to run the 4-3.  Besides in this years game the WCO is amazing.

If I am playing one team vs another I usually grab the Cardinals.  Larry Fitzgerald is amazing and Antrel Rolle creates fumbles on every hard hit.

And yes I play this game too much, but its the only reason I own a 360.

what sucks about the 360 version
is no coop mode >:O  even though its on the regular xbox version. Another thing that sucks is they took out the mid game save feature which I need because my 360 freezes a lot

especially now that they have blocking controls. I loved picking up that game with 3 of my friends and playing coop.
