Here's what I see:

  • All but one game played on Sunday. No Thursday night tomfoolery like last year.
  • Three nationally televised games, vs. SF, NO and Chicago.
  • Only one Monday night game, but that's not center-stage anymore anyway. Two Sunday night NBC contests.
  • Only one game where I'm at all worried about inclement weather conditions, 12/2 at Philly.
  • About the best bye-week positioning you can ask for.
  • Unfortunately, many direct conflicts with the annual Jerramy Stevens Oktoberfest celebration, which begins in August and runs through first week in December.
Thoughts? Have at 'em.

Some quick thoughts...
This is a tough schedule, no doubt.

We miss Chris Henry when we face Cinci--Kelly Herndon thanks you, Roger Goodell.

The Steelers should improve, but we get them early in the season when they'll still be experiencing growing pains from the new coaching staff.

The Bears, Ravens and Saints will decline, and it's a bonus that we get home field against Chicago (where our pass rush should dominate and Grossman should tank) and Baltimore late in the season when half their team, including McNair, will be injured or rested.

I think Vick will be benched by week 17.

The week two game against the Cards will be your best early indicator of the Seahawks' 07.

With the way the NFL is nowadays
One never knows how tough a schedule is based on the previous years.

Last year when we were figuring which games to go to for the Bears we figured Miami, Tampa and Seattle were going to be our tough home games due to the records of those teams the previous year.

It turns out that Miami and Tampa had really bad years in 2007 and Seattle had a decent record but they were nothing like the 2005 team. As for what happened in the games it turns out Seattle was the easiest win at home for the Bears while they lost to Miami and had a close game against Tampa.

This year on paper the Bears have a tougher schedule. However it seems the NFL gave us an easy game on November 18th when we play that old decrepit team called the Seahawks. I just hope Seattle fans and players know that seeing eye dogs and canes are not allowed on the field during the game.

Difficult,
difficult, difficult schedule there. 4 games against playoff teams, 1 against a team that almost made the playoffs, 2 games against the second best team in our division and so on and so on.

by Coach Owens on Apr 11, 2007 11:44 AM PDT   0 recs

ahem.
Not to steal the vitality out of your commentary, but we always play the second-best team in our division twice a year. One of them freaky coincidences.

No but I mean
a team that we didn't beat last year.

by Coach Owens on Apr 11, 2007 12:15 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I was going to say something to that effect...
but, you know, to be fair, we didn't play the second best team in our division in 2001 or 2002 or 2003...

by John Morgan on Apr 11, 2007 12:34 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Conspiracy!
What did the NFL do instead? They made us play all the other teams in our division... twice. And I did some research and found out... this kind of thing happens every year.

It's freaky! Things like this can only happen so many times before you have to say to yourself, "This isn't just a coincidence..."

Conspiracy! Open your eyes, man!!!!

not THAT difficult...
Almost 40% of the league makes the playoffs each year, 12 out of 32 teams.  over the course of a 16 game schedule odds are we will play about 6 games against a team that made the playoffs the previous year.  Realistically half of the NFLs 32 teams make the playoffs or "almost" make the playoffs, so we should play 8 games against that kind of team.

I actually think its a reasonably favorable schedule.  We don't have to play the Colts or the Bolts, and we get both New Orleans and the Bears at home.  It could be a LOT worse.

And, by luck of the draw we get to play 2 games against the niners, the rams and the cardinals!  ;)

by minor threat on Apr 11, 2007 12:56 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I'm very much inclined to agree.
For the last few years the Seahawks have had to play all the other division winners in our conference, plus one in the AFC. It's turned out pretty okay, and I even include last year's middling results in that assessment. We were 9-7 last year, but 3-1 against the previous year's division winners. Our only loss was to Chicago, and we played inestimably better against them in our playoff rematch.

It is major that we're getting the Bears and Saints at home, especially since I agree with the assessment that they'll both be hard-pressed to repeat their success last year. I'm more worried about the rising powers in our division, since strong cases can be made that all three teams made off-season improvements.

Off the top of my head, given that I try not to get hyper-optimistic before the season I see this:

  • 4-2 against our division
  • 3-1 against the AFC teams
  • 3-1 against the NFC South
  • 1-1 against Chicago and New Orleans. Can't decide who beats us. And I'm tentative about both.
That's 11-5. I think that's reasonable. And again, I don't like to set myself up for disappointment.

maybe it is optomistic?
Hi guys,
I'm not a 'Hawks fan or hater, so hopefully this will give an unbiased opinion. I found your site because of the mock draft and I must say its one of the best and most creative mocks out there. As far as the outlook on the season, this one isn't too bad, but it does still appear a little optimistic. The records you propose against your own division and the NFC south sound very reasonable. I agree that you could go 1-1 against Chi and NO, and you could equally go 2-0 or 0-2. I don't see why you guys think the Bears and Saints (and mentioned above, the Ravens) will decline, but the 'Hawks will not. I don't see either the Bears or Saints (or Ravens) getting worse. The part where I think you are being optimistic is against the AFC teams. You will be very fortunate to go 3-1. The only weak team in that division is the Browns and playing in Cleveland is not easy. Pittsburgh, Baltimore, and Cincy are all very tough and expecting to win even 2 of 3 is setting your goals high. I think a repeat of last years 9-7 is a more conservative estimate if you don't want to set yourself up for disappointment. 11-5 is pretty ambitious for any team.
As for the Arizona game early in the season, I agree that the short week of preparation shouldn't hurt Arizona that early in the season with no cross country travel. However, you do have the advantage of playing a team with a new coach early on while they are still figuring things out. That could be a bigger factor than a short week of preparation early in the season.
Thanks for hosting this mock draft and keep up the good work. Good luck this year!

by DrKlopek on Apr 11, 2007 5:34 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

one more thing
One thing I forgot to add is the 'Hawks have the 9th easiest schedule this year based on last years records. Perhaps that makes 11-5 a bit more realistic, but still, if you really want to be conservative, you have to allow for a loss or two that you don't expect. Speaking more to the difficulty of the AFC games, every AFC team plays teams with cumulative records over .500 last year and every NFC team except Detroit faces teams with total records under .500.  The schedule data I refer to can be found here:

by DrKlopek on Apr 11, 2007 5:40 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Errr...
The problem with that theory is that you're making this broad bifurcation: Playoff team and non-playoff team. That fails to account for the huge disparity in ability that an 8 division, unbalanced schedule can create in the quality of individual playoff teams. Further, it makes an ever grosser generalization about the twenty teams that didn't make the playoffs.

Anyway, I think our division schedule will be pretty easy again. Arizona improves, The 49ers were actually pretty crappy last year and St. Louis isn't exactly built for the future. But...

it won't take much for 2007 to be the toughest schedule the Hawks have faced in the last four years.

AZ in Week 2
You catch the Cardinals at a good time before Week 2, because they're playing a late Mon. night game vs. the Niners and will have a short week to prepare for the Seahawks.

Until the season's over....
I'm not calling our division easy, or push overs. On paper, the Hawks shouldn't have gone 1-3 against the 49ers and Cardinals last year, so the potential will be there for a nasty surprise.

All that said though, seattlesucks, why would you try and pump yourself up for two more crushing Josh Brown game winning field goals?
