Open Discusion: Pick 85

So after working on a piece I wanted to post for about an hour I sort of lost my motivation like, say, Calvin Johnson or Amobi Okoye might have today. Go figure. Instead, I thought we could open up the discussion about what we should do with our 85th selection in the third round. It's increasingly looking like it will be our next and last pick in the SB Mock draft, and having taken a running back in the second we are not without our needs. I'll leave the discussion without commentary, but I'm interested to see who everyone comes up with.

Summary of 2nd Rd
Is there a list somewhere of the 2nd round mock picks?

I say look for the best TE available
unless there is a guard option that we can't pass up

Yeah
I'd go with Ben Patrick, TE from Delaware, Scott Chandler, TE from Iowa, though waiting for Michael Allan in round 4 or 5 is fine too.
For OG, I'd love to get Marshal Yanda from Iowa or Josh Beekman from BC if possible.  Andy Alleman from Akron is ok, as apparently his "stock is soaring" into the 1st day.
For DT, I'm going to assume Turk McBride from Tennessee is gone, so I kind of like Tank Tyler though ESPN has him listed as having Character, Mental, and Speed problems.  Because of this, I'd say just pass on him.  Brandon Mebane from California is good and a "ruskell guy" because he works hard and has good leadership qualities.  And Quinn Pitcock from Ohio State would be fine too.

So I'd love to get Yanda and Beekman, or maybe Mebane, because I can see getting a developmental TE later like Allan being fine especially with Pollard and possibilities for 3wr sets more often

Well nvm about
Taking Tank Tyler, he's gone with the 1st pick in the 3rd round now.  THat was fast, 10 picks in a few hours.

Oh I forgot
If we want a 6'4" 250 pound sometimes injured LB who can be a great special teams player who's dad was in the nfl and good LB depth (not necessary because of koutovides, DD Lewis, and Bentley), Zak DeOssie would be a great pick.  Every mock draft I've seen him he goes to the Pats (he knows Bill Belicheck) in the 3rd 4th or 5th, but I've seen him go to us in a mock draft one time.
Anyways, just wanted to mention him because he went to my high school, and gotta have highschool pride.

5 Players To Draft
This is who we should try to draft in the third round in order.
  1. Ben Patrick TE - Good all around athlete who can run good routes and has great hands. I think TE is our bigest need because Polland is old and could get hurt. If Patrick is gone it is best to address the OG need we have because the rest of the TE are not worth our 3rd rounder.
  2. Josh Beekman OG - Fundamentally sound and plays hard every game. This will add the much needed depth and talent our O-line needs.
  3. Manuel Ramirez OG - Incredibly strong with a huge frame to go with it. He will do great in the run. Once again we need depth at O-line.
  4. Marshal Yanda OG - A solid technician who has starting experience at both guard and tackle. If these three OG are gone which I doubt then I would move to our last need DT.
  5. Turk McBride DT - Is very quick off the snap and has experience at both DT and DE. Would add great depth at our D-line.

Good order
I like this except I'd switch Yanda and Ramirez, but not with any strong opposition.

Matt Spaeth
The Vikings website just took him in the the early 3rd, which is fine by me since he is projected in the 5th by Todd McShay.  He's 6'7" and he went to U of Minnesota, so lets hope they ahve more luck with him than we did with a certain 6'7" TE from Washington (if they drafted him in real life)
Oh yeah, in McShay's draft, we get TE Ben Patrick in 3rd, OG Andy Alleman in 4th, and CB DeAndre Jackson in 5th (though we could've gotten Manuel Ramirez who was taken a few picks later)

Oh and also depending where he should go
I haven't been paying attention to mocks to much lately

For a TE I really like Joe Newton from Oregon State

I wouldn't mind Newton in the 5th
But ESPN has him rated fairly lowish
Too lazy to check other sites but here's there summary on him
"Newton is a tall, sure-handed receiving target in the short-to-intermediate zones. He gives a solid effort as a blocker and he is an instinctive pass-catcher. However, Newton's lack of speed, bulk and strength significantly limit his NFL potential. Furthermore, his history of injuries is a major turn off. In our opinion, Newton is an overrated prospect that likely will never emerge as anything more than a backup in the NFL. He should slip to the fifth or sixth round of the 2007 draft."

NFL draft scout
however says a 4th round pick woulnd't be out of the question, and our 4rd is almost a 4th, so I guess we coudl get him there.  He improved his 40 yard times from 4.89 to 4.74, so thats good news, and his 6-7 height is good news.  He's rated lowly because of injury, and if its nonrecurring, than thats even better.

You have to remember to
speed is completely overrated in the west coast offense anyway. Its not very often we are trying to burn someone deep.

I'd go TE
Patrick, Spaeth or whoever is the best fit.

I would also go Guard, but im not really sure which ones are left.

Josh Brown is better than you.

Milner, Newton, Chandler...
I don't see a good reason to take a TE, yet.
so it goes
