Frank Gore doesnt impress me as
much as he probably should.  I dont know why but im not feeling him like everyone else seems to.

by wadswerth on Aug 25, 2007 2:55 PM PDT up reply actions

My Opinion.
Gore is a very good rusher and Moran Norris is a very good lead blocker, but Gore's middling receiving skills and history of injuries keeps me from considering him a truly elite running back.

My point WRT to Peterson/Gore is that both have similar skill sets (patient, good cut-back ability, can break tackles) and both come from good run blocking teams with good lead blockers (Kleinsasser) that the Hawks speedy, aggressive front seven has had troubles with. Especially the -Tubbs version. With Tubbs getting 10-15 snaps and Mebane getting some looks with the first team defense we should get some idea of how the Hawks will do against Gore by seeing how they do against Peterson.

One problem, that's Ken Hamlin.
Damn do I wish we re-signed him for nothing instead of breaking the bank for Grant.

I know it's preseason, but I'm pretty jacked for this game. Game 3 is like the preseason NIT in NCAA basketball, it doesn't count against the standings, but it tells you something about the team.

by John Morgan on Aug 25, 2007 5:21 PM PDT up reply actions

if the 3rd pre-season game is the most important
then things have looked good so far.  The Rams looked very pedestrian in losing to Oakland. And the niners are looking like us in the sunday night game against the bears, 17-0 in the 1st.  Grossman is lighting them up.
Josh Brown is better than you.

by MFAN on Aug 25, 2007 5:48 PM PDT reply actions

shut up mfan
do you really think the real rams couldn't score a TD against the raiders?
Coach Owens is better than you.

the real rams?
there is a fake rams team?  Can they play during the regular season?

last night was the jackson-less rams. kind of like the rams john talks about having no depth.

I'm going to love watching Josh Wilson blitz the QB

So far Trufant has been playing at a different level this pre season (at least I think so)

Wilson and Trufaunt
showing some good coverage, specially marcus

by wadswerth on Aug 25, 2007 7:30 PM PDT reply actions

I don't think Wilson looked that good in the play
the announcers claimed he had good coverage. His back was turned, he didn't know where the ball was and he probably could have been called for interference.

Wilson's skill-set was designed for zone coverage, but without the pass rush zones sort of lose their teethe.

by John Morgan on Aug 25, 2007 7:38 PM PDT up reply actions

Recapping the first half:
  • Tavaris Jackson fumbles on the first snap of the game--Hawks recover. Field Goal
  • The Hawks run D has looked very strong. Tubbs/Darby have effectively stuffed the middle.
  • Trufant has been 90% strong, but is still having trouble with play fakes.
  • The Hawks are not generating pass rush.
  • Hasselbeck has been in top form. The interception was a case of excellent coverage by Antoine Winfield.
  • Locklear is proving competent at left tackle. Willis, serviceable at right.
  • Alexander is a very poor pass blocker. His stats look decent, but he looks slow. This is a very tough run defense, which must be considered, but I'm of the opinion that if Morris gets some looks in the second half he will prove himself the superior back: Better pass blocking, better receiving and more consistent, more efficient running.

All in all, the Hawks have been superior team. The weak running attack has cost them in the red zone.

weaver is
being a bag of suck this pre season

by wadswerth on Aug 25, 2007 8:35 PM PDT reply actions

Watch this:
The local media is going to excoriate Weaver.

It's so frustrating.

Weaver's had some gaffes, some glaring screw-ups, but his ability to receive out of the backfield is invaluable to Holmgren's offense. Instead of burying Weaver, we should be rooting for him, highlighting his accomplishments. His screw-ups have been very poorly timed, often resulting in big turnovers, but he's never had a fumble problem and without a sliver of improvement he's still three times the pass blocker Shaun Alexander is.

Nothing can be accomplished by calling Weaver out, but he will be because it's cheap, an easy story, something that resonates without a moments thought.

It's so frustrating.

But, still, nice pick by Herring. That's the kind of coverage skills he needs to show to win a job as a nickel LB.
