Good news for Everett

Looks like Kevin Everett may be better off than everyone was thinking. According to ESPN.com he has voluntary movement of his arms and legs, and the doctor says he's optimistic that Everett may walk again.

That is good news!

Thank god.
This was starting to remind me of Curtis Williams.

No kidding.
Either him or Utley from Detroit.

Very true.
Curtis Williams was just a tragic story. I still can't beleive how well he handled it in the time he was alive.

which one was Curtis Williams?
that name isn't ringing a bell for me.
Josh Brown is better than you.

He was a UW safety back in 2000
in October of that year when he tried to tackle somebody he got in a helmet to helmet collision. He was later paralyzed from the neck down and later died.

Very good news
I'm glad Kevin Everett looks like he might have a normal life after this.

It's easy to say now, but I didn't fully believe the physician when he was saying the injury was "catastrophic" and there was a grim chance of Everett ever walking again. First of all, just being in the NFL means you're a physical specimen and a freak in excellent health, so it's more likely that the body can recover and heal itself. Secondly, it's in the doctor's interest to rely on the worst case scenario- if he gives the guy too optimistic a prognosis and then Everett dies/is quadriplegic, the doctor looks pretty stupid.

Really really good news
I'm sure he's not out of the woods yet, so fingers crossed, but this is great to hear. And Coach, I agree - I thought about Curtis Williams, too.

It sounds like very new techniques for dealing with spinal injury (inducing partial hypothermia) made a big difference here -- if true, this is also good news for future victims of similar injuries.

Partial hypothermia
I heard about that treatment last night. I'm not a doctor or anything, but I'd be interested to hear exactly how that works.

Found a few details on SI.com:
"Green said the key was the quick action taken by Cappuccino to run an ice-cold saline solution through Everett's system that put the player in a hypothermic state. Doctors at the Miami Project have demonstrated in their laboratories that such action significantly decreases the damage to the spinal cord due to swelling and movement."

As you may have read
The innovators of this technique have received a lot of funding from Bills owner Ralph Wilson over the years -- talk about good karma.

I suppose that when we finally get a Robot League, Paul Allen's investments will contribute to the recovery of any players hit with software problems.
