Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Game Day Open Thread -- Week 4: Seattle at San Francisco

at
September 30, 1pm Pacific
Monster Park
FOX-TV (13)

The Seahawks travel down to the Bay Area to face who was arguably last season's most frustrating opponent, and almost certainly the most angering running back.

Enjoy some angel hair pasta with a light truffle sauce with our friends at Niners Nation, and we'll see you on the thread.

Final Thoughts
Alex Smith has completed 51.8% of his passes, but has thrown just one interception. It's early enough in the season that that is not very exceptional. However, it's not going to last either. Interceptions are the byproduct of forced, errant, tipped and deflected passes. Smith has looked serviceable so far, but don't be surprised if the wheels come off in the next few weeks.

Patrick Kerney has been quiet the past two weeks. That's about to end. Young Joe Staley is a great matchup for the Jowler and I expect him to make noise.

Watch Ben Obomanu. Seattle will emphasize the slots, and facing zones, linebackers and safeties don't be surprised if Obomanu looks a lot like D.J. Hackett.

The Hawks should win today. Great teams win blowouts; make us proud, boys.

Really tough decision, today. Do I watch the final Mariners game of the season or watch the 'Hawks?

V. 1.0, mutherf***er, know what I'm sayin'?

by Scruffy Lefty on Sep 30, 2007 11:37 AM PDT up reply actions

Watch both.
That's why they invented the remote control. But seriously, I'll miss baseball, but today's Mariners game isn't much more important than a spring training game. The Hawks really need to win, not just because they should, but because the Niners have a pretty easy schedule going forward and you'd hate to see Seattle 0-2 in the division. Also, if I'm right in my evaluation, Seattle should make this pretty darn entertaining.

First Half Cap:
Seattle's front seven is absolutely dominating. Pick your stat, 6 sacks, 5 forced fumbles. NFL teams rarely get dominated like this, but that's what's happening. As-is, I would bet the house on Seattle if the score was 3-0 Hawks---it's been that kind of showing for Seattle's defense.

The Hawks passing attack is mobile and firing. Hasselbeck hasn't been all sharp, but Deion Branch is carving up the Niners much hyped secondary. Beck's been given all kinds of time. He has a gilded tea set in his fanny pouch ready for whenever a 49er chooses to show up.

But of course it is only 13-0.  The major reason? Shaun Alexander rots. Can we stop making excuses for him already?

This doesn't look like a game that needs much analysis. Unless something extraordinarily unfortunate happens in the second half Seattle should be able to sub-in the scrubs by the mid-fourth quarter.

Enjoy this, the Hawks travel to big Pittsburgh next week.

D-jack
I was still sort of wondering after week 1 if Deion Branch was an upgrade over Djack. I was also wondering whether Branch was in the same conversation as the other great receivers in the division (Holt, Bruce, Fitzgerald, Boldin).

After today (and the last two weeks of course). I am finally feeling good about the Branch trade. I mean this guy has just plain got game. He and Hass finally seem to be on the same wavelength and its a beautiful site.

Nice to see Weaver involved and playing well. We all have seen a bit too much of Shaun Alexander but I think the combination of Weaver, Morris, Alexander, and even Seneca Wallace getting a carry today is a pretty stacked backfield. We should be good even if any two of those guys were to go down. Shaun looked more fluid with his catch also.

Not a super impressive first outing for Obomanu but there should be more to come.

I was laughing at Trufant comparing himself to Clements but if he keeps playing like he did today, man..

Nice seein Djack get shut down.
