Game Day Open Thread - Divisional Playoff: Seattle at Green Bay

at
January 12, 1:30pm Pacific

I won't belabor the point. You know what this is all about. I would like to mention, however, that for this game, we got Chad on our side.

Commentary here and at our Packers blog, Acme Packing Co.

I feel a wind a-comin', 12 percenters...

FIRST!
Let's go HAWKS!!!

My player of the game - big truck-pushin' Walter Jones, protecting Beck's left side, allowing a big passing day.

SECOND!
I'm picking the Packers, hoping for a jinx. If Seattle wins though, we are Giants fans united!
Bring on the Packers!

Wait a Minute...
I thought the Seahawks lost against the Redskins. I mean, Sean Taylor and everything, the Redskins played very well. They got lucky, blah, blah, blah.

In the mean time, let's hope that worst defense in the league can run over Favre.

Bring on the Packers!

BTW
If Seattle beats Green Bay, or lose to Green Bay, but injure Brett Favre, will John Madden have anything to live for?
Bring on the Packers!

by SSreporters on Jan 12, 2008 12:27 PM PST   0 recs

No
His schtick took a hit when Gilbert Brown retired or whatever happened to him.  He could not survive the departure of Favre.

500th
alright, might be a bit early to claim that but i probably wont get off the couch once the game starts.

Go Hawks.  Get the ball and score, alot

I hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence, or insanity to anyone, but they've always worked for me.

GO HAWKS!!!

OT, but Bobby E did not win comback player
of the year. Greg Ellis of Dalles did. He came back from a torn Achilles to post 12 sacks or somthing like that. The joke of it all is Randy Moss came in 2nd.

by joeshow30 on Jan 12, 2008 1:00 PM PST   0 recs

Let's get this started.
Here's an off the cuff look at the ways I can see this game going for Seattle, from very good, to very bad.

++ The Hawks stow the pass rush in the overhead compartment. D overwhelms their line. Offense is efficient. The Pack can't stop Seattle's 3 and 4 wide receiver sets. The rushing attack is seldom but explosive, Morris + Weaver + Alexander record 150+ rush/receiving yards. The Hawks early lead snowballs, Favre can't set up, and the deep game is shutdown. Grant is mostly shutdown by the second half, but when he rushes Seattle turns it into a run sack. A heroic Favre makes terrible decisions, helps turn a small lead into a pick filled rout. Hawks win by two touchdowns+. Telling stat: Seahawks safeties combine for 2 or more interceptions.

+ Hawks provide decent pressure. Seattle is inexplosive but methodical through the air. The Packers rush game is stifled, but not shutdown. The Hawks mix up the carries enough to provide a compliment to the passing attack, but it isn't terribly productive in of itself. The Pack's deep passing game is kept in check/shutdown, but Seattle (Babs) allows long first down conversions. Slow game, dogfight, one team wins in the end by a late field goal/touchdown, OR one preserves a field goal/late touchdown lead for the victory. Telling Stat: Matt Hasselbeck 300+ yards.

0 Hawks provide some pressure. Favre finds open men, men downfield. Green Bay can open the playbook. Grant is contained, but breaks some long runs. Hasselbeck is solid, but hurried and makes mistakes. Alexander is run into the pile, averages 3 or fewer YPC. The Hawks cover corners and front seven force the Packers into punts, but also allow long completions/long runs. Seattle is playing close, but from behind for most of the contest. The Hawks make it a game, but never pose much of a threat in the fourth. Packers win close, but commandingly. Telling Stat: Beck Int + Alexander fumbles = 2+

- Hawks provide very inconsistent pressure, are forced to blitz. Favre finds open me, men downfield. The Hawks rushing attack is completely bottled up. Holmgren abandons it midway through the second quarter. Multiple passing attempts + little chance of Seattle rushing = sacks and forced throws. The Packers stake a 13+ point lead in the second half, begin to ride the run, Grant breaks 2 or more very long runs, has a very good YPC despite being stopped for most of the contest. Seattle puts up points and yards, but are very turnover prone. The game gets out of hand for the Hawks - miserable 4th quarter. Telling Stat: < 50 rushing yards.

- - Packers attack, sack and dance all over Seattle's offense. A demoralized defense allows big plays on broken plays. Brett Favre grins like he's drinkin the sizzurp. Pack roll to some obscene, one sided victory. Tellings Stats: Floyd Womack, any snaps, Seneca Wallace, any snaps, Alexander, 2+ fumbles.

In any of these you can add in some fireworks by Nate Burleson, but only in the "+" scenario do I think it could be decisive.

someone should put the FOX pregame interview
on YouTube. They had a great segment with Terry Bradshaw interviewing Matt H. and Holmgren. We learned a few new things, like the "give each other space" rule after a turnover started in the second SF game @ San Francisco in 2005. Real funny, too.

Blame it on the gravy.
"The Seahawks had their basic breakfast before jumping onto the buses and flying to Wisconsin Friday morning - except for one twist. They were treated to the special country gravy family recipe from defensive end Jason Babin. Babin, acquired in September from Houston for Michael Boulware, had never made the gravy for biscuits for more than 16 people on his ranch before. Friday morning it was for everyone within a whiff of chef Mac McNabb's huge skillet and kitchen.. "I don't know how far back it goes (in the family)," Babin said. "I know my grandfather taught my father and my father taught me." And the Seahawks are glad he did."

If things don't go well today I'm blaming the inactive Jason Babin & his gravy.
