Game Day Open Thread - Wild Card Playoff: Washington at Seattle

at
January 5, 1:30pm Pacific
Qwest Field
NBC

The Seahawks start their fifth consecutive postseason against America's sentimental favorite team. There will be weather.

Commentary here and at our Redskins blog, Hogs Haven (who were one of Field Gulls' earliest supporters and enthusiasts in the SB Nation, so try not to get too personal with 'em).

You know the drill, 12th Man.

Frank Hughes is reporting that Deion Branch is Out.

Let's hope for a performance that we're expecting
Not the Seahawks that randomly fall in a coma.

I think their problem is they don't focus for "should win" games.  They seem to step it up for big games.  Let's hope they do it tomorrow.

SEA! HAWKS!

I think you're exactly right.
Somehow, these guys came within an overtime of making it to the NFC Championship last year. I think they're best when they got something to prove. Remember how everyone picked Carolina to beat us in '06...

Good Luck Seattle
We could really shut some people up here, this could be a statement game heading into next round. I hope we do what our team is capable of  here.

Alexander needs to prove himself here, if he doesn't run as hard as he's ever run in this game, i think his reputation might take a hit that it can't recover from.

Let's go.

I really, honestly, want to see a blowout.

he's an excellent route runner
cooley is an excellent route runner. but the other thing, reminiscent of mike martz's rams, is that gibbs loves max pro. he leaves his tight ends in to block so much you ignore them in your coverage schemes. you start leaving the middle of the field open and cooley gets open for big, big plays. brandon manumaleuna used to gash us that same way back in the days of mike martz's rams. gibbs and martz, while on the surface they have diametrically opposed offensive schemes, both come from that sid gillman/don coryell coaching tree.

I think that's exactly correct. Also, I just don't think most teams know how/have much experience playing against an H-Back.

H-back
Gibbs got rid of the H-back position two years ago when Al Saunders came in.  Cooley now plays as a traditional tight end.

I hope we start out on defense today
I'd love to begin the game with our defense on the field, the crowd going bonkers, a quick 3-and-out, and then get the ball first in the third quarter.

Final Thoughts.
Deion Branch is out, but, luckily, Tyler Durden is in. That's encouraging.

A couple bold predictions: The Hawks defense arrives today. If the Hawks get an early lead, they can crush the Skins. The only thing that scares me is if the Hawks' O sputters and they allow the Skins to stay in the game. Any team can suffer a close loss. Any team.

I'm so excited that I've been forced to drink to calm my nerves. Shoot this worked in week one:

NBC's interview with Coach Holmgren:
Coach, do you feel like you have nothing to play for since Sean Taylor was not on your team?

Coach, Sean Taylor's teammates feel like Sean Taylor inspires them to play every game for Sean Taylor.  What do you have to say to that?

Coach, God took Sean Taylor as a test of faith.  Why do you hate God?

Coach, it's generally accepted that the fact the Seahawks are playing against Sean Taylor's team makes you Satan incarnate.  Do you agree or do you not disagree with this statement?

The gameplan for the Skins.
Hass is having accuracy problems and his wrist is hurting.

They will take away the run and force him to go to the air.

I think the sooner this half is over the better.

by Ben in Va on Jan 5, 2008 3:16 PM PST reply actions

First Half Cap: Hawks 10 - Skins 0
If your judging by quality of play, the Hawks are way up. Having a legitimate two score advantage would be nice, though.

The D is just at the gates of really dominating. They are running over this line. Kerney owns Heyer's lunch and lunch money. The safeties are doubling their man on every deep pattern. Grant is a monster in coverage. What an asset. The kind of trends we're seeing, turnovers are eventual.

The special teams is kicking ass right now. Big ups.

Here's an odd theory. If my friend and teammate died, I might play worse. Just sayin'. The Skins are not sharp. Collins is making some eh decisions in coverage. The receivers are flat dropping passes. The pass D does not look very strong, but...

Beck is hurt. I can see it. You can see it. The Horse Racer can see it. It's stifling the offense. Holmy needs to adjust and sit on the run. It looks like it's there today. Alexander is benefitting from being heavily spelled. He's poppin' through the hole like he once did. Mor - WEAVER! That was very, very nice to see. Give the guy some more goddamn touches, man!

I think the Hawks adjust the offense enough. I think Seattle's D begins to turn some of those near TOs into TOs. I think Seattle piles on in the second in a low level blowout.

If only we could play this way on the road.

by John Morgan on Jan 5, 2008 3:16 PM PST reply actions

Hass is playing like there is more pressure
around him then there really is. Wether or not thats because he is hurt remains to be seen.
