It ain't over yet

I didn't put this in the bitch thread because... it's a reality check.

There's no way this last game was a must-win game to get in the playoffs, it's not week 17 and there's still a ton of games left over.

Let's look at the 'Hawks losses so far this year:

1.  Buffalo on the east coast... this team has consistently gotten blown up on the road in the eastern time zone by interior teams, and it was a predictable loss

2.  49ers loss.. eerily similar to Hasselbeck & Alexander running in to eachother to gift AZ the win a couple years ago.  The game could have easily gone either way

3.  NY Giants on the east coast... see comment #1.  Also, Giants may be a lot better than anyone expected, regardless, they were clearly on a hot streak.

4.  3rd string QB against last year's NFC runner up?  I'm surprised it was as close as it was.  I wrote that game off when I heard Beck was scratched.  That holding call on the guard on Jones' long run was terrible -  you could call that every play against a jumbo line like Dallas or Pittsburgh.

We still have a pile of divisional games left, including some against Arizona where we can start to close the gap.  Some predicted losses (New England, AFC East in gen'l) may actually be winnable games, especially if these early losses get us to rally together.

We are in the division race, regardless of if paper thin AZ as the leader now.  They have a surgically repaired origami swan for a quarterback and it's only a matter of time until he goes down.  The 49ers are who we thought they were.

GO HAWKS!

Hass might be out next week.

That’s essentially an automatic loss, considering it’s a road game against a good team.

Dallas might be winnable now

Romo is out for 4 weeks

You may gain some yards on the ground, but eventually Lofa will end up biting you in the ass.

God I hope so.

My dad’s a Cowboys fan, and I don’t want my Thanksgiving ruined because of his insufferable fandom.

It's not over, but it's very unlikely.

The east coast thing is, if not BS, not as pronounced as fans would like:

Seattle’s Record:

All Road Games: 49-76 (.392)

East Coast: 15-21 (.416)

Football Outsiders studied it over all teams and couldn’t find any correlation.

Seattle has played very poorly and would need to compile a .727 winning percentage against a tough string of opponents just to reach 9-7. That’s very, very unlikely.

But you're saying there still is a chance?

You may gain some yards on the ground, but eventually Lofa will end up biting you in the ass.

wanna bet?

The Seahawks are terminally flawed. I respect your optimism but it is naive. You spend your whole post trying to diminish the facts, while hanging your hat on last year or the fact that the cardinals can’t possibly be good. If we are going to be an elite team we have to be able to compete with the top teams. When we lose next week to the Buccs will you still feel this way? We have not done a very good job of infusing the right players in the offseason. Our GM’s approach is to draft high character /try hard guys that are undersized and “fast”. His draft cred is Lofa Tatupu. Why? Is it just me or is Lofa overrated? It was brutal watching the Giants game. Lofa will not make the pro bowl this year. He does not deserve it. Would you rather have Hutch or Julian Peterson? I think JP is past his prime. Brian Russell is not good. Darryl Tapp is a bust. Deon Branch is a bust. Charlie Frye is horrid. Kelly Jennings is not worth a first round draft pick, I am not sure why we need a 120 lb cornerback. Mebane seems to be a nice player, and I like Julius Jones. Carlson is doing ok, and I am intriuged by Owen Schmidt. I believe Kerney had a great year last year, but I also think he is past his prime, Grant Winstrom anyone? Ruskell deserves alittle more time, but he needs to get out of his comfort zone. Drafting tiny players that try hard should be the exception not the rule. We had a nice run and probably should have won the superbowl. We are done!

Or... we are just beginning

we, if taking the GB model, are well positioned for another long run soon. Alas, GB has Ted Thompson. But I will soften my stance on Ruskell and see what he creates with Mora.

At one point this season, I wanted to see our assistant coaches stay… now… well… change is good.

It is what it is...

Kerney is on track for 12.8 sacks at his current pace

I wouldn’t be comparing him to Wistrom just yet.

Not to pick nits, but technically 9 other players would have to be involved.

Brian Russell wouldnt make it to the dog pile in time, but at least he’d run in late and take a few cheap shots after the whistle.

Right....but whos counting?

And B.R. was the eleventh guy I was speaking of, though not officially in the tackle, he will jump on the pile at somepoint

by collyb on Oct 13, 2008 11:08 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Maybe they can give him .05 sacks

for his savvy, veteran pile-jump. Or maybe he just gets the one pile-jump, adding to his league-leading total.

Charlie Frye is...

Probably a fairly average 3rd string quarterback.

by clamslayer on Oct 13, 2008 2:01 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I think most folks universally agree the defense has been underperforming

with a couple of bright spots like LoJack and Kerney maintaining a high level of play. According to listed weights we don’t have a player under 180. Not sure what you’re talking about there (your 120 lb cb comment).

by clamslayer on Oct 13, 2008 2:03 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Most folks are optimistic :)

Last year our defense played very well, but we also played a lot of teams with crappy offenses, look what happened when they went to green bay. Now we have huge contracts out and refuse to sit players because of there names and what they have done in the past. I love these guys…but its time to start rebuilding. Let the best man for the job play…and I doubt Brian Russle is the best man for any job on any team (just an example). Lets get in good place now to do some great things next year….

exactly

Couldn’t have been stated any better. I’m ready to start thinking about the future. The only positive is that we are on pace for a good draft pick.
