A 49ers Fan Raised the 12th Man Flag Yesterday
Gary Payton has done some good things for Seattle, and he intends to do more. I also personally like him.
However, he should NOT HAVE BEEN ALLOWED TO RAISE THE 12th MAN FLAG BEFORE THE GAME YESTERDAY.
Why? During one of those abominable "who-cares-whats-going-on-in-the-game" interviews, he clearly proclaimed that he is a 49ers fan.
Yes, a 49ers FAN.
Tell me if I'm wrong, but the raising of the 12th man flag has become an important and symbolic little ritual with significant meaning to true fans. The number is dedicated to us who bleed blue and scream red. It is a symbol of appreciation and loyalty.
Gary Payton, however, is not a member of the 12th man. He is a man of great import to the Seattle community, but not a loyal Seahawks fan.
How many of you would have given your left nut to raise that flag yesterday? And they let a niner fan do it! This is just wrong.
Thoughts?
A place to bury strangers.

I disagree
I love the Glove
You may gain some yards on the ground, but eventually Lofa will end up biting you in the ass.

I completely agree
It makes absolutely no sense to me for a 49ers fan to raise the 12th man flag. It goes completely against the spirit and meaning of the 12th man.

He's been a fixture of the Seattle area for a long time.
Therefore, it makes sense that he raised the flag. Do you think Jamie Moyer is a Seahawks fan? How about Edgar Martinez? Jerry Cantrell and Matt Cameron? Probably not, but they still get the entire stadium rocking, because people appreciate how much these people have meant to the city of Seattle.
It’s not that big of a deal.

My whole section....
Everyone in earshot was talking about him being the best 12th man flag raiser EVER. I guess to each is own.
Please don’t bother going down a list of past 12th man flag raisers to try and prove me wrong. Not really interested in debating something so subjective.
But I did want to cast my vote. The Glove is an icon here and brought many young men in my age group some of our best memories as Seattle sports fans. Heck… my wife even teared up watching him from home by herself.
I'd like to kick Josh Brown in the privates!

What would you think...
… if he raised it when the 49ers came to town? Wearing a 49ers jersey?
I know it would never happen, it would be an controversial visual.
But that’s what the man is on the inside. It just seems wrong to have the fan of a division rival posing disingenuously like that.

...Wearing a 49ers jersey, with Mike Holmgren's head on a stake, while felating Bill Walsh's moldering corpse.
Then I’d be outraged.

This isn't making a mountain out of a mole hill.
This is making a mountain out of completely level ground.

Drew Carey
Last year Drew Carey raised the flag the week after Cleavland whiped our ass. that sucked a little I thought.

He's a co-owner of the sounders
Sounds like it makes sense to me.

I hate the NBA now but I did love and still love Gary Payton.
So what if he’s a 49ers fan? He meant a lot to Seattle sports.

The way Gary went to bat for Sonics fans
earned him a free pass to whatever the hell he wants in my book.

The best flag raiser will always be Ichiro. That was classic.
Of course, I wouldn’t mind if Felix tried to dethrone him.

Or get Evan Longoria.
He makes everything more awesome, even with no ties to Seattle.

That was part of the awesome.
It’s the total Ichiro Batshit Crazy package.

He raised the roof too
I thought that was special. I leaned over to my dad and asked him, “Do you think Ichiro knows what the fuck football is, or knows whats going on right now?”

Julian Peterson used to play for the 49ers
Are we sure we can really trust him? How deep does this conspiracy go?
