ESPN - Seahawks Question

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=easterbrook/081014&sportCat=nfl&POLL367=4000000000000000

Interesting question posed by Tuesday Morning Quarterback's Gregg Easterbrook:

"Stop Me Before I Blitz Again! No. 2: Seattle blitzed seven as Aaron Rodgers tossed an easy 45-yard touchdown pass to Greg Jennings, making the score Green Bay 17, Blue Man Group 10. The down-and-distance was third-and-6 at the Seattle 45. Since Green Bay was already beyond field-goal range, why was Seattle gambling for a sack in the first place?"

Any answers?

A place to bury strangers.

John's video analysis

has shown that we tend to blitz at inopportune times. This seven man blitz with relatively little to gain has happened before, and we got burned by it, the draw to Lynch for the TD comes to mind. We just don’t seem to learn.

Remembering this play in particular

Bruss was right over the line of scrimmage so Trufant had no help over the top, and he got completely burned by Jennings. It didn’t help that Trufant did nothing to jam or slow down Jennings. I thought that if Truf had jammed him at the line, and bought the blitz another second the play would have resulted in a sack. I remember Rogers being hit but he stayed in and delivered the pass, the blitz needed another half second.

If I remember correctly

Trufant has an injury that is preventing him from jamming at the line.

He's still got 1 good hand

I’m not saying it had to be much, but he should be trying to do something to buy the blitz a little time. He knew there was no help over the top, so if he’s going to line up in press against Jennings there needs to be some sort of attempt to slow Jennings down.

You can't jam with one hand

You would lose balance so quickly.

You may gain some yards on the ground, but eventually Lofa will end up biting you in the ass.
