Is it too early to start talking draft?
We're currently tied with KC for the third worst record in the league. Yes, I realize it's way early, but it's nice to have something to get excited about. So, let's just say for the sake of argument that we end the season with a 6-8 pick. Who do you take? What about 3-5?
I'm going with Taylor Mays at 6-8 and either Michael Oher or Eugene Monroe at 3-5.
Wishcasting for 2009 is all I've got at this point.

The season's not even halfway over
But I believe we started thinking about the draft for the Mariners at about the 33-40% mark?
So no, it’s not too early.
Though I did think about the draft for the Sonics before their season even started, and that didn’t do me much good…

No
And even if we were at 3-5 I’d like Taylor Mays there too.

Check that out. He’s be a safety that shouldn’t struggle helping over top or in run defense.

I have a serious man-crush on Mays,
but I just feel like with Walt on the decline and with so much premium OT talent at the top of this draft, we’d be foolish to pass up the chance to lock up our blind side for the next ’Hawks generation.

I don't know.
Beyond his tools, I’m not too impressed with Mays. I can’t think of a great NFL safety who has done less in college. Bob Sanders had 348 tackles, Mays has 156. Landry had 12 INTs, Mays has 4. Polamalu has 27 tackles for a loss, Mays has 3. I’d hate for Seattle to take next year’s tools monster bust.

Interesting.
To be perfectly honest, I don’t follow too college football too closely, but it seems like Mays is everywhere in every USC game I’ve seen this year. Maybe small sample size, but he certainly looked legit based on what I saw. Anyway, I created this diary mainly to put a feeler out there on who people are getting excited about so I can keep an eye out for them.

No politics
he’s just talking about a celebrity that talks in incomplete sentences and just throws ideas out and never really tying them together, but you kinda know what he said and job creation and never forget maverick.

ehh....
let’s not go down this road. I rationalized that since my comment was self-deprecating and was an innocuous joke about SP’s lack of grammatical acumen (as opposed to her politics) that I could slip it by. Not worth arguing the point though, so mea culpa; let’s move on.

John's probably right.
If he falls into the 2nd round, might as well take him.
An OT/QB would be much more valuable.

Not to disagree with you completely...
but remember that Mays is on a defense with future NFL 1st rounders. And his stats come from his true freshman year and sophomore year. I think totals stats are pretty misleading for defense. A guy has a chance to get lots of tackles and INTs if his defense is so-so and he is the only stud, especially if you don’t have a great offense and the other team gets on the field a lot.
I think that Mays is for real based on a few coaches comments, but there is not much to go off of.
Example, John Carlson had good stats from the ND Brady Quinn great year, horrible stats from a horrible team. In the end he was not a bust who had one good year, but a guy who’s stats were affected by the team around him.
But I have no proof and little evidence to say that he is for real. But I’ll be watching and paying attention.

Never too early to start talking draft...
I say we take QB D’Brickashaw Hasselbeck in the 2032 draft…
but seriously, I’m jonesing for Sam Bradford next draft.

Bradford is a sophomore, so he won't be draft-eligible until 2010.
I would be ecstatic if Monroe or Oher somehow fell to us.

I definitely like Sam Bradford over Matt Stafford and, without a doubt, Tim Tebow.
Despite Tebow’s potential to be the next Steve Young, I’d prefer a sure thing like Bradford.

Here's what I wrote up today:
What positions should we be looking at? Well, I follow college football religiously so I’ll write up what I think.
I’m going to HOPE the Seahawks end up with a pick in the late Teens and we slip into the playoffs, however that’s looking less and less likely every Sunday.
What I’d LOVE to get is a big DT like a Glenn Dorsey or Sedrick Ellis, however in this draft there aren’t any studs like that. So lets go position by position:
QB- It’s possible but I highly doubt it.
RB – Again, this doesn’t seem to be that big of a problem
TE – No chance
WR – Possible.
OL – Possible
DL – Possible
LB – Only if Hill Leaves
CB – Possible although we’ve taken a lot of these lately
S – PLEASE DO IT GET RID OF BRIAN RUSSELL
So, I’ll run down my top players at these positions:
QB – Matthew Stafford out of Georgia, Sam Bradford out of Oklahoma and Josh Freeman out of Kansas State will be the big three names, I prefer Stafford but it’s negligible at best
RB – Chris Wells out of Ohio State, he’s a worse prospect than Mcfadden or Peterson but that doesn’t mean he’s not a stud. Knowshon Moreno out of Georgia may be a better rated prospect than Wells but has knee concerns. CJ Spiller and James Davis out of Clemson along with Javon Ringer out of Michigan State.
WR – MICHAEL CRABTREE out of Texas Tech is a FREAK. He reminds me of Calvin Johnson in almost every way. Calvin was regarded as the #1 prospect but he fell, this could happen to Crabtree and I’d take him #1 if I were Seattle. Jeremy Maclin is another bigger fast WR out of Missouri, Percy Harvin is the 3rd guy who’s smaller and very shifty.
OL – Michael Oher out of Mississippi is as good as D’Brickashaw Ferguson, I don’t think he’s the same Caliber as Jake Long or Joe Thomas. Eugene Monroe out of Virginia is the 2nd rated T as he just mauls people. Andre Smith out of Alabama is my 3rd tackle, my guess is all 3 of these guys go top 12. Alex Mack out of Cal is an incredible C, he’ll measure out way better than Chris Spencer or Nick Mangold did.
DL – DT SenDerrick Marks out of Auburn I guess. The DT is really weak this year and I don’t think we take a DE.
LB – Ray Maualuga then Brian Cushing out of USC. These are my top 2 followed by James Laurinaitis out of USC. These guys will all be studs.
CB – Malcolm Jenkins out of Ohio State is a shutdown corner. I have him just above of Vontae Davis out of Illinois.
S – Taylor Mays out of USC. He’s a local kid from O’Dea and he could be the best athlete in the draft. I’ve read he’s a top 5 pick and I’ve read he’s an early 2nd round pick. I think he’s closer to the top 5. He has all the intangibles and reminds me of Laron Landry. Will Moore out of Missouri is less of a sure thing but is definitely a first round talent.
My top 5 players for the Seahawks would be:
1 – Michael Crabtree
2 – Michael Oher
3 – Malcolm Jenkins
4 – Taylor Mays
5 – Jeremy Maclin
What do you guys think? What do we need to address?

Thoughts
Is Maclin tough enough for the WCO? Are we ready to give up on our current young guys? (Almost certainly yes)
With Mays, he may be an early second round talent, but he’s also a workout warrior. He’ll have a great combine and mind-boggling pro day and go top 15, regardless of actual skills as a safety.
Will we really be picking this high? I’m still hoping for a comeback and at least 6 wins. In fact, I’d prefer not to have a top 10 pick and the high salary cap obligation that player commands.

Wow, USC with the three best LBs?
Ray Maualuga then Brian Cushing out of USC. These are my top 2 followed by James Laurinaitis out of USC.
Yeah, I thnk we all know you meant Laurinaitis out of OSU anyways though.
I think we need either OL, DT, or Safety.
The problem is, I see our parts and think, they’re all pretty good… but that can’t be the case, or else we wouldn’t be 1-5.

I think Maclin is tough enough ,yes. I also think the offense Mora Jr. institutes will be substantially different than Holmgren’s.
As for the salary cap, I’m always down for trading down and to keep the signing bonuses down as a bust can cripple a franchise.

Me too.
If I had the number one pick, and everyone kept saying that JaMarcus Russell should be one, I’d say, find, I’m trading down to pick #5, getting a second round pick for it, drafting Adrian Peterson, AND saving myself about $25 million dollars.

I was irritated when the FO didn't pick one of the many promising
young QB’s last draft. I don’t think this one is nearly as deep. Hass looks like he’ll finish out his contract and call it quits, so we really need to get a future QB. Wallace is not the answer. Frye will probably be dropped after this year. We really need to invest this draft on our offense. Get a tackle, guard, receiver, maybe a young half back. Then focus on the D.

I do wonder
how much Michael Lewis has distorted people’s perceptions of Michael Oher. Lewis had a vested, monetary interest in portraying Oher as the fastest, strongest, most athletic OT since Pace/Ogden/Jones. Lewis is a gifted writer, and he knows how to employ his ‘objective,’ journalistic style to maximum rhetorical effect. I remember after reading Moneyball how I thought OPS was the end-all, be-all of baseball stats. It seemed a no-brainer to only draft kids with a good college track record, good power, and a good eye for the ball. Why, I thought after reading that book, would anyone ever trust scouts again? Obviously, recent years have shown these lines of thinking to be flawed (a high OPS does not directly correlate to a hitter’s worth, good college hitters aren’t all ready-made pros, and high-quality scouting carries a ton of value).
Now, it’s clear that Oher offers a world of physical gifts, but I’m no scout, and I wonder how much Lewis’ words has influenced those scouts, execs, and fans that are now salivating at the chance of nabbing him.
