Patrick Kerney to Visit Dr. James Andrews

The headline sort of says it all. Andrews has become a harbinger of doom for sports fans. Patrick Kerney suffered a torn labrum in last year's wild card round beatdown against the Washington Redskins. Though serious, Kerney isn't throwing any fastballs, so it's not career altering/ending. This is the other side of the older free agent acquisition that wildly out-performs your initial expectations. Next season, he's still on the team.

I've Done This

Admittedly, I’m not a professional athlete.

However, when I first dislocated my shoulder in ‘01, I tore the labrum. It’s a partial tear. The main effect was to make the shoulder more likely to come out again, and I had a loose shoulder for six years, until I blew it out again.

I had surgery last year to tighten up the joint. I’ve lost some mobility, but it doesn’t feel like it’ll come out any more.

You don’t lose strength, or anything crazy like that. But it does make you want to protect the shoulder, and it increases the chance of further injury. Yeah, a labrum tear isn’t the end of the world, but it’s not good, either, and if he has surgery to correct the problem, then I suspect he’ll be gone for the rest of the year.

Just Wondering..

Looking at them; both Patrick Kerney and Julian Peterson are as impressive physically as anyone in the NFL and as ridiculously fit as they come.

What makes Peterson a lot less likely to be broken down by injury than Kerney??

Athleticism?

Injury (Achilles vs Chest,Shoulder)?

Nature of position?

he's much more fit/athletic...

than just about everyone. That’s a high standard to set.

And also the nature of the position, like you mentioned.

He isn’t tussling with linemen every play, as Kerney must do.

I was unaware that Kerney tore his labrum last year....

Question for any medical experts out there. We all know that a labrum injury is terrible news for pitchers and quarterbacks, but how much would it affect a DE’s performance, in regards to engaging blockers and making tackles?

Its mostly a pain tolerance thing

You may gain some yards on the ground, but eventually Lofa will end up biting you in the ass.

On the plus side

as for the signing itself, Kerney has been playing at a high level this year. He’s playing a lot like he did last year. So at least we’re not seeing the rapid decline in skill. A labrum tear for a non-pitcher isn’t necessarily the kind of repetitive stress injury you usually associate with an aging player. It might just as easily have been Spencer on his way to Birmingham and I doubt any of us would be all that surprised if it were. Trufant has had his share of shoulder problems in his younger day as well.

To his credit, Ruskell has drafted for the future at DE. Unfortunately, developmental clocks are notoriously unpredictable. Baraka Atkins and Lo-Jack are still taking their lumps (though both look solid), while Tapp has shown glimpses of real pass rush ability but has yet to develop much game to game consistency.

How much would it rock to be Dr. James Andrews?

You’d be a fuckin god in the sports world. Every big-name athlete who got injured would owe you big time.

I shudder to think of what his salary probably is.

Then again,

Looking at the man, his salary is probably the only thing getting him laid.

Watching the replay again, it never gets old

I still don’t how the hell he managed to reach behind the CB, make that catch, somehow keep both feet in-bounds, and shake off two defenders.

the game is re-airing on espn360.com right now

brilliant. I jumped ahead to the middle of the 4th quarter to catch up on the action. They’re streaming Sunday Night Football, but how long before the NFL does something like this?

ok texas tech fans

your team just made an amazing drive and had an amazing play to take the lead. There’s 1 second left. You rush the field. Your team is penalized 15 yards on the kickoff. You’re excited, I understand.

Don’t do it again.

Seriously, just wait a few more seconds.

I saw the same thing happen when Rutgers beat Louisville a couple years back

I guess at that point, when you’re drunk and you just witnessed your team pull off one of the greatest wins in its history, you can be forgiven for not looking more closely at the scoreboard.

Having said that, the TT AD and Big 12 suits are going to be pretty unhappy in the morning.

the drunkness is a good point

but after getting penalized and shooed off the field they do it again. While the next penalty was only 7 and a half yards, it’s still hurting the team.

Also: why didn’t Tech’s coach go for 2? The absolute worst case scenario (conversion intercepted and returned for 2 points) still leaves Texas back 3 points with 1 second left for the kickoff.

Walter Jones, you were the greatest, most dominant player I've ever seen at any position. It's been an honor to be your fan.
