Game Thread: Seahawks @ Giants 2

Seattle is getting stomped by what looks like a superior opponent. Right now, it's hard to see another win. Ever. But no matter how bad things get, you do not give up and you do not turn on each other. Ever.

Wonder what Holmgren

is saying to Mora… maybe “good luck”?

3 TDs!

san franscisco did it 2 weeks ago

Where the eff is the pass rush?

LoJack, Kerney, and Tapp are all asleep in this game.

Fire John Marshall.

There. I said it.

Yeah

that’ll fix poor secondary play… maybe fire Mora?

It is what it is...

by kidder95 on Oct 5, 2008 11:43 AM PDT up reply actions

Last I checked

the players play the game… and the long balls are on double moves… the players are there, but are being outplayed… the secondary is being outplayed. That is all around. Let’s play man up and see how well we match up… Their size and height advantage then dominate us in a more “slow death” type way and they can then isolate Steve Smith on Babs or Russell… We don’t have players… same coach took you to the superbowl… just saying… players make plays… not coaches.

It is what it is...

by kidder95 on Oct 5, 2008 11:45 AM PDT up reply actions

Not sure

we have anything for this team. We are either a) really shitty team, or b) Giants are superbowl bound and catching our “dominate” d on yet another bad day.

It is what it is...

by kidder95 on Oct 5, 2008 11:49 AM PDT up reply actions

I'm overreacting, I admit it.

But really, how many times do we have to fall behind so badly, so early, on the road that we’re out of it by the the start of the second quarter?

We have immense talent in the secondary, and they’ve gleefully blown coverages almost as a matter of policy in 3 of this year’s 4 games. I’m sick of it.

I realize saying a season is over is now cause for dismissal on Field Gulls, but come on, guys.

Potential

in the NFL, ought to be a 4-letter word… ghesh… so much “potential”

It is what it is...

by kidder95 on Oct 5, 2008 11:47 AM PDT reply actions

Here is what I don't understand...

Do we have untalented players playing a good scheme, or do we have talented players in a crappy scheme?

Seems to me that we have a lot of talent that isn’t put in a position to succeed.

by scotthawk on Oct 5, 2008 11:48 AM PDT reply actions

The talent is there

so it’s either poor execution by good talent, or shitty play calling.

by BrianL on Oct 5, 2008 11:50 AM PDT up reply actions

Talent

based on “40” times or “plays” made?

It is what it is...

by kidder95 on Oct 5, 2008 11:51 AM PDT up reply actions

well, one pre-season assessment is wrong

the defense will not carry this team. The offense is going to have to do everything

by Will Kier on Oct 5, 2008 11:50 AM PDT reply actions

defense looks like UW

This is the most pathetic display of secondary defense. Josh Wilson is getting burned on almost every single play. And Brian Russell is getting beat deep too many times.

okay that was ridiculous

what with the schoolyardy hand motioning and then the bullet STRAIGHT to Dockery.

Rightio.

At this point, it’s probably best to start pulling the regulars.

by BrianL on Oct 5, 2008 12:03 PM PDT reply actions

Seahawks must really hate Holmgren

to be playing like this his final year.

by thebiz on Oct 5, 2008 12:05 PM PDT reply actions

Mike

Maybe Mike will decide to stick around and then Jim Mora can go take Ty Willinghams job

by SacramentoSeahawk on Oct 5, 2008 12:06 PM PDT up reply actions

The D is playing with some heart still.

Finally getting some nice plays (although to be fair, the Giants are focusing on running the clock now).

by Strang on Oct 5, 2008 12:06 PM PDT reply actions

Another punt.

At least they didn’t get any points off of that pick.

by Strang on Oct 5, 2008 12:08 PM PDT reply actions

the D line's true talent is mediocre/average

I think it’s time to re-assess, based on competition with good teams like GB and New York

by Will Kier on Oct 5, 2008 12:09 PM PDT reply actions

and the secondary seems to be a problem as well

i think our defense may not be as good as we thought

by SuperShadow on Oct 5, 2008 12:10 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm surprised

we would not want to at least give Red a try… he is a bigger body. Maybe next week.

It is what it is...

by kidder95 on Oct 5, 2008 12:12 PM PDT up reply actions

The rush defense was pretty good before this game.

Afterwards, though… the DVOA numbers aren’t gonna be pretty for this one.

by Strang on Oct 5, 2008 12:12 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, this has been absolute domination.

Seattle will sink towards the bottom. I have trouble thinking they don’t deserve it.

by John Morgan on Oct 5, 2008 12:12 PM PDT up reply actions

That much regression across the board?

I can’t believe it’s purely talent. What’s going on? Execution? Play calling?

by BrianL on Oct 5, 2008 12:15 PM PDT up reply actions

It's got to be a combination of all three.

The talent level has regressed to a certain extent, I’m sure, but this has just been too ugly to be classified as anything other than a complete and total disaster.

J.K.L.

by Aaron Campeau on Oct 5, 2008 12:17 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't see that either.

I really don’t understand what’s going on with the secondary. I think they might be playing more zone in hopes of forcing interceptions. It’s not working.

by John Morgan on Oct 5, 2008 12:16 PM PDT up reply actions

If that's the case

doesn’t John Marshall have to take some heat for not adjusting the scheme?

by GuamND on Oct 5, 2008 12:25 PM PDT reply actions

It's kind of a stupid secondary concern...

… but unless the ‘hawks turn this season around in a big way, you can probably kiss Lofa’s pro bowl streak goodbye. A big national game like this and a terrible performance like this…

by Strang on Oct 5, 2008 12:26 PM PDT reply actions

Yuck.

I am really starting to wonder what this offense will look like next year. Because this WCO thing is not working out.

by djafrot on Oct 5, 2008 12:31 PM PDT reply actions

The WCO thing has worked extraordinarily well for us over the years.

Suddenly two bad games out of four makes you question if the system won’t work for this team?

by BrianL on Oct 5, 2008 12:32 PM PDT up reply actions

Exactly.

Overreacting from another crappy road game when our starting receivers are coming back from missing 4 weeks (plus training camp for Branch) is a bit much.

by Strang on Oct 5, 2008 12:33 PM PDT up reply actions

Yes.

Two? This WCO hasn’t really worked all that efficiently since 2005.

by djafrot on Oct 5, 2008 12:34 PM PDT up reply actions

And that had nothing to do with the MVP running back falling off the face of the earth

Not to mention that it was pretty good last year when we went Air Holmgren.

by Strang on Oct 5, 2008 12:35 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree

But it’s not the WCO’s fault is what I’m saying.

by Strang on Oct 5, 2008 12:41 PM PDT up reply actions

today's defenses are based on stopping the short passing game

The 3-4 and the zone blitz work very well against the WCO.

I’m not saying it’s ONLY the WCO that’s the problem, though.

by djafrot on Oct 5, 2008 12:44 PM PDT up reply actions

The offensive scheme seemed to work well today

The dang receivers kept dropping balls that hit them in the hands. And they would have been big plays too.

by EA on Oct 5, 2008 12:46 PM PDT up reply actions

they dropped them

because coverage was ridiculously tight and Matt had to squeeze the ball in there…. it’s tough to catch when the ball’s coming in hot and there are two DB’s in your face.

Matt looked good, he just had no chance.

by djafrot on Oct 5, 2008 12:48 PM PDT up reply actions

wait, what?

what standard are you applying for “efficiently”?

Hasselbeck had a career year last year. Against mediocre defenses,, but a career year.

by Will Kier on Oct 5, 2008 12:36 PM PDT up reply actions

Only because he had to...

…because we couldn’t run worth a damn.

That kind offense wasn’t going to win us much in the playoffs.

by djafrot on Oct 5, 2008 12:39 PM PDT up reply actions

Huh?

This makes no sense.

by redwolf75 on Oct 5, 2008 1:25 PM PDT up reply actions

WCO is not the problem

at all. Hasselbeck’s good. Don’t mess with a good thing. The receivers aren’t good, but they are fungible.

by Will Kier on Oct 5, 2008 12:33 PM PDT up reply actions

At least

We’re not the only good team struggling. Check out the Colts getting decimated by the Texans.

by thebiz on Oct 5, 2008 12:35 PM PDT reply actions

It's kind of a weird season.

Seahawks are struggling, Colts struggling, Pats without Brady and starting to struggle (although that was just one game against the Dolphins…). Steelers winning ugly ugly. This is a year with some shakeup potential.

by Strang on Oct 5, 2008 12:37 PM PDT up reply actions

What justifies...

Calling the Seahawks a good team?

by Azimeir on Oct 5, 2008 12:40 PM PDT up reply actions

Let's not abandon ship

They were a good team coming into this year.

by thebiz on Oct 5, 2008 12:42 PM PDT up reply actions

i agree, there are many games left in t he season

a 2 game winning streaks brings us right back into things

by SuperShadow on Oct 5, 2008 12:44 PM PDT up reply actions

And assuming that the Pats and Bills take care of business

we’re still in the hunt for the division. Not that that has anything to do with the quality of the Seahawks.

by Nate Dogg on Oct 5, 2008 12:45 PM PDT up reply actions

I never intended to abandon anything...

But when you’re 1-3 and your win was against the worst team in football and the three losses consist of two rapings and a home loss to a champion of mediocrity (at best) it’s probably time to call it what it is; until proven otherwise on the field, the 2008-2009 Seahawks suck.

And it pains me to say.

by Azimeir on Oct 5, 2008 12:46 PM PDT up reply actions

If they arn't going to the playoffs, they aren't playing in 2009.

That’d be merely the “2008 Seahawks.”

However, I still have hope. Not to progress past the wild card round of the playoffs, per se, but to win the NFC West. The Niners, Cards, and Rams are horrible.

by redwolf75 on Oct 5, 2008 1:28 PM PDT up reply actions

I figured this would happen

Game after bye week = Doom.
Early east coast game = Doom.
Combine the two? Total disaster.

by EA on Oct 5, 2008 12:38 PM PDT reply actions

Hass

Does anyone know how many more year Hass is in contract or how old is he?
What’s the future in QB?

by GuamND on Oct 5, 2008 12:38 PM PDT reply actions

It may be time to draft his heir apparent

Just not sure there is anyone that is worth a pick in next years draft. We need a safety, corner, and T.

It is what it is...

by kidder95 on Oct 5, 2008 12:40 PM PDT up reply actions

Agreed

There were some nice late round QBs this year, surprised we didn’t pick any up.

by thebiz on Oct 5, 2008 12:44 PM PDT up reply actions

We have bigger needs

And I think Seneca and Frye are serviceable backups.

I’d be much more inclined to draft offensive line.

by djafrot on Oct 5, 2008 12:45 PM PDT up reply actions

Seneca and Frye are simply backups

it’s nearing the point where we should think about drafting a potential franchise quarterback.

by BrianL on Oct 5, 2008 12:46 PM PDT up reply actions

I think Matt's got two or three years left

And I’d rather fix the line first.

Maybe we can do both…

by djafrot on Oct 5, 2008 12:53 PM PDT up reply actions

True.

I just have a feeling we’ll find the new QB through a trade, like we did Hass.

by djafrot on Oct 5, 2008 12:57 PM PDT up reply actions

Hass was a bit of a unique situation.

Holmgren drafted him while in Green Bay, then traded for him after he came to Seattle.

by BrianL on Oct 5, 2008 12:58 PM PDT up reply actions

True again.

I really wonder who’s going to run the offense next year…

by djafrot on Oct 5, 2008 12:59 PM PDT up reply actions

Greg Knapp probably.

I thought maybe that would be out the window when the Raiders were interviewing him to replace Kiffin, but they went with Tom Cable instead.

by Strang on Oct 5, 2008 1:00 PM PDT up reply actions

Holmgren seemed like he would always draft a QB very late in the draft

and see if he could make something of the guy. He hit gold with Hass. If he had been able to continue doing this we might have something by now.

by EA on Oct 5, 2008 1:00 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't think an east coast trip

constitutes a 40 point swing. This is just Seahawks suck right now.

by Nate Dogg on Oct 5, 2008 12:47 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm not blaming the trip entirely for this loss

but if it is causing a competitive imbalance, the NFL needs to address it.

by BrianL on Oct 5, 2008 12:49 PM PDT up reply actions

This is an excuse....

That losing teams make and prevents them from admitting, identifying, and correcting the real problems.

by Azimeir on Oct 5, 2008 12:50 PM PDT up reply actions

Okay, let me break this down for you.

“If traveling to the east coast puts west coast teams at a competitive disadvantage, the NFL should look into and consider changing the start time of games.” != "The Seahawks lost because they traveled to the east coast.

by BrianL on Oct 5, 2008 12:53 PM PDT up reply actions

Is there anything to substantiate the question?

What we know is that the Hawks are bad on east coast trips. There are several other teams on the west coast, do they struggle as well?

by Nate Dogg on Oct 5, 2008 1:04 PM PDT up reply actions

I think the argument is made that West Coast teams are at a disadvantage

because they lose three hours, whereas East Coast teams gain three hours traveling west.

I’m not saying that this is true or false, just something interesting that would be worth investigating further.

by BrianL on Oct 5, 2008 1:09 PM PDT up reply actions

West Coast Teams...

Have been playing on the East Coast for decades and suddenly a 40-point beat down of the Seahawks raises a question of competitive imbalance in the year 2008? How is it that the 49ers were the most dominant team in football in the ’90’s specializing in winning on the road? Could the disadvantage in the ’Hawks playing on the road (having to travel far) be in anyway balanced by the fact that they have one of the best home records (where teams must travel just as far to get here)?

Competitive imbalance? There’s supposed to be a competitive imbalance. You are implying that it is harder to fly all the way across the country west to east than east to west which is ridiculous especially since it was never ‘discovered’ until this fateful day. It’s an excuse; just like when Denver couldn’t win in domes in the late ’80’s early ’90’s. Just like the Cubs are ‘cursed’.

by Azimeir on Oct 5, 2008 1:04 PM PDT up reply actions

Call off the dogs.

It’s an honest question. Why would anyone need to make excuses for Seattle? We are not personally accountable for their play.

by John Morgan on Oct 5, 2008 1:07 PM PDT up reply actions

There is nothing wrong with Matt

He is an upper tier quarterback and will recover from this loss.

by giant fan since 57 on Oct 5, 2008 12:46 PM PDT reply actions

Our Defense

Is more concerning. They’ve taken a big step back this year.

by thebiz on Oct 5, 2008 12:48 PM PDT up reply actions

the defense would be at least OK

If we could maintain an offensive drive for more than three plays.
