Game Thread: Seahawks @ Giants 2
Seattle is getting stomped by what looks like a superior opponent. Right now, it's hard to see another win. Ever. But no matter how bad things get, you do not give up and you do not turn on each other. Ever.

What type of 2nd-half adjustments do you recommend, John?

I think this is an execution thing.
I have no idea how the secondary has regressed this badly.

If this game ends in a loss, I'm wondering if Ruskell is going to go back into panic mode

Marshall is the one who can't make defense-wide adjustments.
by BrianL on Oct 5, 2008 11:43 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Last I checked
the players play the game… and the long balls are on double moves… the players are there, but are being outplayed… the secondary is being outplayed. That is all around. Let’s play man up and see how well we match up… Their size and height advantage then dominate us in a more “slow death” type way and they can then isolate Steve Smith on Babs or Russell… We don’t have players… same coach took you to the superbowl… just saying… players make plays… not coaches.
It is what it is...
by kidder95 on Oct 5, 2008 11:45 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
But if the plays don't work why keep running with them?
And use the enter key.
by BrianL on Oct 5, 2008 11:46 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'm overreacting, I admit it.
But really, how many times do we have to fall behind so badly, so early, on the road that we’re out of it by the the start of the second quarter?
We have immense talent in the secondary, and they’ve gleefully blown coverages almost as a matter of policy in 3 of this year’s 4 games. I’m sick of it.
I realize saying a season is over is now cause for dismissal on Field Gulls, but come on, guys.

by BrianL on Oct 5, 2008 12:15 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
It's got to be a combination of all three.
The talent level has regressed to a certain extent, I’m sure, but this has just been too ugly to be classified as anything other than a complete and total disaster.

today's defenses are based on stopping the short passing game
The 3-4 and the zone blitz work very well against the WCO.

The offensive scheme seemed to work well today
The dang receivers kept dropping balls that hit them in the hands. And they would have been big plays too.
by EA on Oct 5, 2008 12:46 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
they dropped them
because coverage was ridiculously tight and Matt had to squeeze the ball in there…. it’s tough to catch when the ball’s coming in hot and there are two DB’s in your face.
Matt looked good, he just had no chance.
by djafrot on Oct 5, 2008 12:48 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs

I never intended to abandon anything...
But when you’re 1-3 and your win was against the worst team in football and the three losses consist of two rapings and a home loss to a champion of mediocrity (at best) it’s probably time to call it what it is; until proven otherwise on the field, the 2008-2009 Seahawks suck.
And it pains me to say.

If they arn't going to the playoffs, they aren't playing in 2009.
That’d be merely the “2008 Seahawks.”
However, I still have hope. Not to progress past the wild card round of the playoffs, per se, but to win the NFC West. The Niners, Cards, and Rams are horrible.

It is what it is...

He's not, but drafting a QB might not be a bad idea.

We have bigger needs
And I think Seneca and Frye are serviceable backups.
I’d be much more inclined to draft offensive line.
by djafrot on Oct 5, 2008 12:45 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Seneca and Frye are simply backups
it’s nearing the point where we should think about drafting a potential franchise quarterback.
by BrianL on Oct 5, 2008 12:46 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think Matt's got two or three years left
And I’d rather fix the line first.
Maybe we can do both…

Getting a QB ready to start can take 2-3 years.

True.
I just have a feeling we’ll find the new QB through a trade, like we did Hass.
by djafrot on Oct 5, 2008 12:57 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Hass was a bit of a unique situation.
Holmgren drafted him while in Green Bay, then traded for him after he came to Seattle.
by BrianL on Oct 5, 2008 12:58 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
True again.
I really wonder who’s going to run the offense next year…
by djafrot on Oct 5, 2008 12:59 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Greg Knapp probably.
I thought maybe that would be out the window when the Raiders were interviewing him to replace Kiffin, but they went with Tom Cable instead.
by Strang on Oct 5, 2008 1:00 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
why Knapp, necessarily?
I don’t know much about the guy.
by djafrot on Oct 5, 2008 1:09 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
He was the OC for the 49ers when Mora was the DC
And accompanied Mora in Atlanta.
by Strang on Oct 5, 2008 1:23 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Holmgren seemed like he would always draft a QB very late in the draft
and see if he could make something of the guy. He hit gold with Hass. If he had been able to continue doing this we might have something by now.

It's going to be an interesting week
Lets hope there are some changes on the way.

If there really is something about west coast teams struggling when traveling to the east coast
perhaps the NFL needs to re-evaluate game-times in those games.
by BrianL on Oct 5, 2008 12:45 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I don't think an east coast trip
constitutes a 40 point swing. This is just Seahawks suck right now.
by Nate Dogg on Oct 5, 2008 12:47 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'm not blaming the trip entirely for this loss
but if it is causing a competitive imbalance, the NFL needs to address it.
by BrianL on Oct 5, 2008 12:49 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
it's not the first time we've lost on the east coast
he wasn’t justifying this one loss
by djafrot on Oct 5, 2008 12:49 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
This is an excuse....
That losing teams make and prevents them from admitting, identifying, and correcting the real problems.

The reading comprehension thing is escaping a lot of people today...
by BrianL on Oct 5, 2008 12:51 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Okay, let me break this down for you.
“If traveling to the east coast puts west coast teams at a competitive disadvantage, the NFL should look into and consider changing the start time of games.” != "The Seahawks lost because they traveled to the east coast.
by BrianL on Oct 5, 2008 12:53 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Notice I used an "If" statement instead of declaring that as an absolute.
by BrianL on Oct 5, 2008 12:55 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Is there anything to substantiate the question?
What we know is that the Hawks are bad on east coast trips. There are several other teams on the west coast, do they struggle as well?
by Nate Dogg on Oct 5, 2008 1:04 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
And at what point do people start arguing that teams coming to Seattle...
… are losing because of having to travel all the way up here?
by Strang on Oct 5, 2008 1:05 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think the argument is made that West Coast teams are at a disadvantage
because they lose three hours, whereas East Coast teams gain three hours traveling west.
I’m not saying that this is true or false, just something interesting that would be worth investigating further.
by BrianL on Oct 5, 2008 1:09 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Wouldn't the East Coast team...
Suffer the same ‘penalty’ upon returning home then?
by Azimeir on Oct 5, 2008 1:13 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
? Obviously not,
as they’re on the west coast for merely a few days.

West Coast Teams...
Have been playing on the East Coast for decades and suddenly a 40-point beat down of the Seahawks raises a question of competitive imbalance in the year 2008? How is it that the 49ers were the most dominant team in football in the ’90’s specializing in winning on the road? Could the disadvantage in the ’Hawks playing on the road (having to travel far) be in anyway balanced by the fact that they have one of the best home records (where teams must travel just as far to get here)?
Competitive imbalance? There’s supposed to be a competitive imbalance. You are implying that it is harder to fly all the way across the country west to east than east to west which is ridiculous especially since it was never ‘discovered’ until this fateful day. It’s an excuse; just like when Denver couldn’t win in domes in the late ’80’s early ’90’s. Just like the Cubs are ‘cursed’.
by Azimeir on Oct 5, 2008 1:04 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Call off the dogs.
It’s an honest question. Why would anyone need to make excuses for Seattle? We are not personally accountable for their play.
by John Morgan on Oct 5, 2008 1:07 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
There is nothing wrong with Matt
He is an upper tier quarterback and will recover from this loss.

Our Defense
Is more concerning. They’ve taken a big step back this year.
by thebiz on Oct 5, 2008 12:48 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
the defense would be at least OK
If we could maintain an offensive drive for more than three plays.
by djafrot on Oct 5, 2008 12:49 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Wow...
Rosenfels just threw the worst pass ever.
Amazing.
