Patrick Kerney Placed on IR

This is good news. It doesn't exacerbate his injury. It does protect him and allow Seattle's young defensive ends to get as many looks as possible. Here's the big question, does Seattle retain Kerney in 2009? Julius Peppers is sure to be franchised. Terrell Suggs is a manbeast, but might be mismatched within the system. Kerney played strong to start the season, is he still the best end Seattle can hope to attain? I'd side on Suggs, who is a true difference maker and a young 26.

confirmation that the team knows the season is done.

One wonders if Matt will follow.

Oh yeah, I’d love to have Suggs too… but how many zillion dollars will he cost?

by djafrot on Nov 19, 2008 3:47 PM PST reply actions

Doesn't matter to me.

Players of his age and caliber, not requiring mortgaging the future by trading half your draft (Jared Allen), never, ever are available. The problem is: Why would he sign with Seattle? And does he fit this scheme? Otherwise, I’d give him Nate Clements money. Seattle’s built so strongly through the draft, a player like Suggs is a luxury they can afford.

Suggs is a stretch

I mean considering how atrocious the offense has been this year, do you really think the organization will invest a fortune on a defensive player?

by aerozeppelin on Nov 19, 2008 8:37 PM PST up reply actions

I'm starting to think that

this team could be scary good next year with all the rest and recuperation time they’ll get.

by PascoJoe on Nov 19, 2008 3:48 PM PST reply actions

I, and probably John based on the last few posts..

would like to respectfully disagree.

I will accept any draft combination of Crabtree, Andre Smith, Stafford, and Mays. Hear that Ruskell? Time to start spreading vicious rumors about all 4 so they fall.

by abender20 on Nov 19, 2008 3:56 PM PST up reply actions

Scary good? I'll take "good" at this point.

But I do like the move. It might make a lot of sense to shelve Hasselbeck too. And Weaver. And start Forsett for Morris. And Russell must have some kind of injury, so IR him for Jamar Adams…

by lemonverbena on Nov 19, 2008 4:57 PM PST up reply actions

"Good" is good enough for me too

as long as “better” isn’t the best we can hope for.

by PascoJoe on Nov 19, 2008 6:25 PM PST up reply actions

I think somewhere in the neighborhood of 6-8 wins next isn't too unreasonable to expect.

That would already be a dramatic improvement from this year, and would set us up nicely to be contenders again in ’10.

Every day I hear about Seattle sports' failures. Every night I fall asleep to the sound of my own tears.

Suggs? Really?

I had no idea he would be a realistic option for the Hawks. Cut Kerney, adios Leroy Hill, I’d be ecstatic to have Suggs on the team.

by Nate Dogg on Nov 19, 2008 5:56 PM PST reply actions

Not sure Suggs is a realistic option...

Suggs seems more like a “cross-your-fingers” option.

It’s right to say if you’re going to spend, spend on a difference maker. Suggs is a difference maker. Seattle needs a difference maker. But I think that’s about as far as it goes. Before we even get to why he might sign in Seattle, why any team would let a bona fide pass rusher in his prime see the market?

If anything, we should be mining the Raiders roster to see if there’s anything there that crazy old man might let loose that we can use.

To let Leroy Hill go

and sign Suggs with that kind of money would be amazing. Kerney, Suggs, Bryant, Mebane. Can you say 4 man rush?

by myx on Nov 19, 2008 7:48 PM PST up reply actions

I think the Raiders are going to franchise Asomugha

and I’d honestly be surprised if anyone re-signed for a long contract with the Raiders given the current mess the team’s in. Surely after Javon Walker and that other dumb move their cap space is limited, too.

Read that Earlier....

I was really starting to like the kid…

I hope he comes back so he can keep improving! The difference between game 1 this year and the level he is playing at today is night and day…the kid has a ton of potential

OLB/DE Tweener

I don’t think he’ll play, so I imagine he’s being auditioned from a pure talent standpoint. If he lasts beyond this season or sees time in game, I’ll give him a closer look.

Don't you mean

“It doesn’t exacerbate his injury”, John?

I'm being owned again!

Thank you yes.

Suggs = Interesting option

I agree (like most of us here) that Suggs is and would be a huge impact player, wherever he plays. But I also think he might not be a good fit for our defense right now. Unless the 3-4 is in our future. Thank God, Marshall should be out when Mora sets up his own staff, so a lot of that can and will change. What kind of defense did Mora run as HC in Atlanta, and/or when he was DC in SF? The one thing I want to see is a guy that will use the scheme that best fits the talent he has, ala Fritz Shurmer. Something no other DC under MH has really ever done.

Back to the players (and on topic) I doubt Suggs will leave Baltimore. Not sure who else they have as a FA, but they’d be foolish to let him go. Same with Peppers, he’ll get the Franchise Tag before Carolina lets him leave. An interesting situation could be brewing in Tennessee though. If the web sites that I’m reading are correct, both Albert Haynesworth and Kyle Vanden Bosch are set to be on the FA market. I can dream about Haynesworth all I want, it doesn;t change 2 facts, 1. Tenn. will not let him leave, and 2. he doesn’t quite fit the TR mold of chartacter guys with his nasty, face stomping mean streak. But geez he would be just what the Doctor ordered to add some size and attitude to our nice guy defense. That brings me to Vanden Bosch, while not in the same league as Peppers or Suggs, he is a better DE than many think. And probably a more realistic option as far as being attainable and affordable than the high end guys like Suggs and Peppers. Other DE’s i see on the list I am using are Chris Canty (dallas) and Igor Olshansky (SD) neither being a true pass rusher at 300 Lbs, or Bert Berry who at 34 is older than Kearney.

There is only 1 guy at either D-line slot I would chance with our top 5 (ish) pick and even then I’m not sure he would be the best value and that is Brian Orakpo, DE Texas One analist says “Brian plays the game like a junk yard dog chasing an auto parts manager over a fence who was trying to steal auto parts. Brian (Junk Yard) Orakpo…I like it!”

Just some things that have been floating around my mind, because I am worried about our pass rush in 2009. Kearney will be 32 -33 years old, he will also miss most of if not all of training camp, and who knows what we’ll get from him afterwards.. Tapp is still only showing flashes, same with Adkins and Lo-Jack well lets just say he better show me something soon.

by Dougula on Dec 16, 2008 12:13 PM PST reply actions

I'm very surprised by Lo-Jack.

He doesn’t even look like the same player I saw back in college. I know the competition is much stronger, but I just don’t see the burst and power.

Man do I love midgets.

It has been said

On of the so called media draft gurus that I read, thought he might be a product of the USC system, and the extreme talent around him. BUT that’s just one guys opinion. I still think its too soon to write him off. No matter how ho-hum underwhelming his rookie season has been so far.

Beer, its not just for breakfast anymore.
