RIP Ed McMichael - The Tuba Man

Posted over at Lookout Landing earlier...

If you've been to any sort of college or professional sporting event in Seattle, you've seen Ed McMichael, The Tuba Man. Sadly, The warm tones of his tuba after games won't be heard again.

Ed McMichael, the Seattle Sports Tuba Man, murdered at 53.

Ed was one of my earliest professional sports related memories. I remember listening to him in front of the Kingdome as a child in the mid-90s. I've had a few brief chats with him outside of Safeco and Qwest over the last few years. He was as friendly a fellow as anyone.

Rest in peace, Ed. Seattle has just lost a beloved piece of our sporting culture.

Sad sad, so sad.

I never talked to the guy, but I used to love the thumbs-up he’d give me when I dropped some spare change in his bucket.

God, what a tragedy.

I've never heard of him either, weird.

You’d think having season tickets for the Hawks and Sonics for 3 years, I would’ve seen him. Anyways, RIP Tuba man. Apparently your presence as a Seattle sports fan impacted many.

RIP

I’m sure i’ve seen and heard him plenty of times having walked to the Kingdome and the new stadiums more times than I’ll ever remember, esp. as a kid, but he didn’t carve out a place in my memory like the late ‘Bill the Beer Man’ because of Bill’s rally-cries inside the stadium. Even though he is cared for as part of Seahawk lore, I didn’t really have much of a connection with The Tuba Man, but if he has any family out there, my thoughts and prayers are with them. May justice be served on the assailant(s)!

I'm sick to my stomach

I remember Tuba Man more vividly from Sonic games than ’Hawk games – but he was definitely a piece of the fabric around here. Just a tragic story and depressing for reasons that have nothing to do with sports, but a cruel final dagger to the year Seattle has had.

RIP

this saddens me

When going to the Kingdome, I always liked Tuba Man better than I liked the trumpet guy from Chehalis.

Sheesh, that’s a horrible way to go, though.

Sports and Bremertonians. Because we can.

I'm not an "emotional" man.....

For some reason this really hurts. This man was truely a part of the Seattle sports experience. I remember him more vividly than the ballgames my father took me to as a child. As I’ve gotten older and had a child of my own it almost seems like this is the end of an era. I feel like these worthless punks that did this have stolen something from us all.

My guess is that to most people, he might have just been some nice background noise while leaving a stadium or concert hall. I can’t speak for everyone who felt they “knew” him… but I’m not looking forward to the silence.

I'd like to kick Josh Brown in the privates!

I remember seeing just recently in his new Seahawks hat...

The one thats actually shaped as a Hawk, I don’t know why but for some reason that stuck in my head because I remember noticing it was the first time I had seen him wear it….

I hope those punk ass kids are tried as adults and get the maximum punishment…..bullshit as helpless 55 year old man who never did anything to hurt anyone cant walk the streets without some punk ass kids thinking they are tough. You want to see tough, jump someone tough you assholes!!1
