Have a question about the Dolphins?

This is a weekly tradition at thephinsider. If you have any questions about the Dolphins than ask away. A number of members from our site will answer the best that we can. Me, Matty I, or Little Nicky 21 will try to answer as quickly as we can

Hopefully will see a clash of two good teams. I am looking forward to working with you guys and good luck on Sunday!

Again, anything you guys need to know about the fins, just ask away.

Go Dolphins!

Who is the future of your franchise at QB?

Henne?

I heard he didn’t look to good in preseason.

by redwolf75 on Nov 6, 2008 9:19 PM PST reply actions

Ahh the Qb question...

Interesting question because just recently over at phinsider we had a discussion about this…

Well actually Henne was impressing during the pre-season. Some said that he looked as one of the best rookie qb’s, if not the best rookie qb. He just came out slinging the ball left and right. He also got one drive during the Dolphins Cardinals game, leading the dolphins to their only TD scoring drive of the game. That being said…

The dolphins have invested two 2nd round picks in back-to-back years hoping to find their franchise QB. John Beck (from BYU) and Chad Henne (from Michigan) Many say Chad Henne is finally going to be our answer at the position, and quite frankly I agree. Although I would love to see John Beck given one more chance, all signs point to Chad henne being the answer. Hell, if Bill Parcells thinks he is…then I guess he is

How has Jake Long been playing?

And sorry if that sounds like a simple/dumb question, I just haven’t watched the dolphins enough to really know.

by MFAN on Nov 6, 2008 11:25 PM PST reply actions

no questions are stupid...how would you know? you are a seahawks fan lol...

Jake Long has fulfilled more than what I could have ever expected. He truly fit the bill of that first overall pick. He is fantastic in the run and is steadily improving in the pass.

You Seahawks fan’s are good at asking questions lol. This was another topic that was brought up recently.

Miami runners have averaged about 5 yards a carry going toward his side. He has surrendered a 2 sacks (one being a coverage and past 6-7 seconds of blockage). He has gone up against quality pass rushers (calvin pace, mario williams, terrel suggs) and they all were impressed by him.

Jake Long has also been a vital part in our “Wildcat” offensive scheme. We shift him from the Left to the Right and he is the lead man at the point of attack. He is either responsible for the initial surge (for that Ronnie Brown Dive) or he is responsible for that seal block (on the R.W sweep).

So simply, he has played a big role in our offense and I could not have dreamed of more production out of him. The way he is playing and how opposing players are reacting to him, he may very well be seeing himself on a trip to Hawaii.

Here’s a little shoutout to those that want a quick simplified breakdown of the wildcat. (Click Me)

Have you been surprised in how well the dolphins have played?

Are you comfortable with Chad Pennington? Who has filled the void since Jason Taylor left?

You may gain some yards on the ground, but eventually Lofa will end up biting you in the ass.

by Scruffy Lefty on Nov 7, 2008 5:56 AM PST reply actions

I'll take these one at a time..

1-15 to 4-4 and in playoff race…who would’ve expected that? I know this was going to be a rebuilding year and there will be growing pains..but wow. I am impressed, surprised, and ecstatic about how well the dolphins have played. They are playing competitive football in a way that we havent seen recently down in Miami. If it wasnt for two last minute plays, we would be sitting at 6-2. So honestly, I am very happy about how well the dolphins are playing.

Boy…o boy…I think the best thing that happened to Miami this year was Brett favre deciding to un-retire baby style. If he didnt whine his way out of GB, Dolphins would not have gotten Pennington. Before Pennington came we would probably be seeing Chad Henne (2nd round draft pick out of Michigan) as our starting Qb. Not neccessarily a bad thing, but hes a rookie so you would never know. What Chad Pennington brought to Miami was leadership, consistent play, and accuracy. All those things are really what is helping us win games. We havent had a Qb play this well since the days of Dan Marino!

I am very comfortable with Chad Pennington at the helm. He makes good decisions and his accuracy and poison during clutch situations really helps our whole team. He is completing more than 2/3 of his passes. He is 7th in the nfl in passing yards. He is averaging a league 4th, 8.2 yards a pass. Plus, his passer rating is about 95. So in short, Chad Pennington is exactly what our team needs right now

Whose Jason Taylor? Oh the person who we traded to the redskins for a 2nd round pick and is now riding the injury bench at Washington? Lol. At first I was skeptical about dealing Jason Taylor. He has been in the hearts of Miami fans for years. We got a 2nd round pick out of it, and I was excited because of the high draft pick, but then I wondered…where is the pass rush.

The pass rush void has been filled by playmaking, nfl sack leader, JOEY PORTER!!! Man this guy is unbelievable. Half way through the season he has 11.5 sacks and is on pace to break the nfl single season sack record (and dont worry brett favre wont lie down like he did against strahan). He is in the running for Defensive Player of the Year. He is always pressuring the qb, forcing fumbles, and causing havock. So simply, Joey Porter > Jason Taylor.

How is Pennington doing so well?

The only guy I know is Camarillo (only because of Fantasy), and Cobb from those two big plays in that one guy, oh yeah and Ginn jr. from that one big game as well.

Is Ronnie Brown having a good year? Or is it only a few games and the produt of a certain formation? And on a related note, Wildcat, integral part of your success, or just a gimmick that people like to talk about?

Did you guys have the 3-4 defense last year or is that something Parcells has brought?

The ‘goat’ on our team is Brian Russell, one of our safetys. Do you guys have a regular starter who is horrible that you rag on all the time as well?

by LantermanC on Nov 7, 2008 8:56 AM PST reply actions

Lots of questions = lots of answers

Chad Pennington (can i just copy and paste my answer from above lol?) …well I must say he is playing extremely well. in the nfl he’s like the top 10 in every major stat (except int—> lol) He has brought consistency, leadership, and poise to a team that really needed it. When push comes to shove, he always finds someway to get the job done. He is exactly what this team needs and their record 4-4 and 1 game out of their division title, really shows how effective he is…especially coming off a 1-15 season.

Well it seems everyweek there is a different person stepping up to make plays. One week its Anthony Fasano, another week its ted ginn, camarillo, ricky williams, ronnie brown, david martin, patrick cobbs…everybody is contributing. We arent that type of offense that relies on one player to make the plays (like detroit —> calvin johnson)..we spread the ball around and thats what is working for us. Fantasy owners may not like this, but its winning us ball games.

Ronnie Brown is still having a good year. He’s had his “fantasy” good games, but play by play he is doing extremely well. Defenses are constantly stacking the box with 7-9 people hoping that they can limit this guy. Heres the thing…what happens when you stack the line? Numbers may not show his impact (even though he does have 7tds) but he is opening up this passing attack. So his impact is very very vital to our sucess.

Wildcat is the flashy thing…but its not really all our running success. We use that for a spark or for getting revenge on a jerk off team (New England Patriots). The wildcat is something you HAVE to gameplan for, or it’ll kill you. A gimmick is a once in a while thing…like a trick play…there is nothing tricky about the wildcat. Its just another way to run simple run attacks, like dive, sweep, toss..its just taking the qb out of the equation. The reason this works, is because Ronnie Brown is patient and is good enough to wait for a hole…then slam through it.

Origionally 3-4 was the plan last year…we had joey porter, jason taylor, zach thomas, and the dread headed monster channing crowder (look for him on sunday) leading our team. Problem was injuries to our d-line, joey porter, and zach thomas pretty much forced us into a 4-3.

Parcells, Jeff Ireland, and coach Sparano…the trifecta has revamped our roster and brought players who fit that 3-4 scheme. Last year we just had a coach force players into that 3-4 scheme…this time we found players who are used to that 3-4 scheme.

Lol “goat”…well not really one player, but we have one portion of our team that garners whether we win or lose. That is our secondary. We will be able to put up the points and stop them in the run game (denver broncos stopped to 14 yards total rushing)..but its our inconsistent pass d that will deem whether we win or lose. Will it be the defense that got savagely brutalized by the cardinals? or will it be that shutdown pass d that limited brandon marshall to 2 catches? So if anyone needs to be our “goat” it has to be that secondary.

How is Philip Merling playing?

Many analysts thought we should have drafted him over Lawrence Jackson.

by redwolf75 on Nov 7, 2008 9:28 AM PST reply actions

A solid question

Philip Merling’s stock in the draft decreased due to his sports hernia not letting scouts fully evaluate him. That being said many though he was a top 15 talent.

Philip Merling is a part of our d-line rotation. We constantly rotate our d-line so that we can keep people fresh. We have 3 spots for 5 solid players. Philip Merling is always pressuring the qb. Although he has only 1 sack this year…he has countless amounts of hurries…and even batted a ball that turned into a interception.

He’s pretty much had a similar stat production than L. Jackson but just hasnt “started”. He is showing all the signs of being a top player in a year or so when he becomes a full time starter.

Jackson also his been playing in a rotation.

He’s been pretty disappointing this year, but I’m hoping that is due to him merely being a rookie and learning the ropes.

we have two rookie de's...and the other one kendall langford...has been starting and has been playing extremely well...

our d-line is young and is giving opposing teams trouble when trying to run the ball (most recently broncos —> 14 yards total)

he is wejghing in at 290 (compared to his 271 around the draft)...he doesnt seem to have lost his speed...he is still explosive off the line and has that lateral quickness to run down the running back...overall i am impressed
