What the Seahawks Need to Do to Reload for 2009
Interesting article I stumbled upon:
http://bleacherreport.com/articles/90232-seattle-seahawks-what-they-need-to-do-to-reload-for-2009/
Some of his points are waaay off (Replace Mebane with Dorsey?!) A lot of people are also talking about signing Cassel. Personally, I think he's a good backup but not starting material.
However, there are some interesting points he has. Considering how much of a mess our secondary has been, I would much rather than the team hire someone else other than Mora.
It should be exciting to see what Ruskell will do this offseason considering the amount of holes the team has. So what are your thoughts on what we should do in the offseason?
A place to bury strangers.

How much of the secondary's problems are really Mora's fault?
How much of the perceived problem is more of a function of play calling from Marshall and perhaps injuries?
And really, if this person is suggesting that we replace Brandon Mebane with Dorsey, I question whether or not he’s actually been watching this team play.
I don’t think I’d put much stock in this article.

I don't like the article either
Anyways, it was just something that I thought would generate discussion about the 2009 offseason. That’s about it.

fun fact:
I read two articles on that site about the Mariners once. One was about how we will contend and win the AL West in 09’ and were bad last year because of injuries. The other claimed that Yuniesky Betancourt is a breakout star and the Mariners MVP. I never again went to that site. Ever.

If by breakout star they mean Derek Jeter without the ability to hit
then yes, Yuniesky Betancourt is a breakout star and the Mariners MVP.

Most valueless player.. ship it.
Can't wait for Ruskell to knock this one out of the park.

Wow
The only one I really agree on is resigning Hill. And even then, it’s not absolutely necessary. DeAngelo Hall went from “wtf why are you in the pro bowl” to flat out terrible.
This guy doesn’t watch Hawks football. Wilson is coming along nicely, and our D-line is young and learning.

That article was....interesting
I highly doubt the Chiefs trade Dorsey after 1 season. The Chiefs are rebuilding they aren’t gonna trade away one of their best young prospects.
Cut Josh Wilson?? Even cutting Hasselbeck is stupid at this point, Wallace and Frye are both FA’s if I’m not mistaken, that leaves Seattle with 0 QB’s on the roster. Cutting Russell is fine and I expect that it will happen.
Hill is going to get A LOT more than that on the open market.
No thanks on Cassell, Sam Bradford please.

One more thing
Why on Earth would Tomlin leave Pittsburgh? That town and team absolutely love him, he isn’t going anywhere.
by MFAN on Dec 9, 2008 12:19 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Not to mention that even if that was the sort of thing that was done...
why would the Steelers give US of all teams permission? So many things wrong in that that it’s hard to pick a place to start.

When aeorzeppelin said Dorsey
I thought he meant Mebane for KEN Dorsey, the QB. Glen Dorsey makes more sense (and less sense). KC wouldn’t trade him, and Dorsey is relatively expensive while Mebane is relatively cheap.

Yes, do please cut a solid corner with good physical ability and burgeoning skills.

This is a terrible article.
1. “Jim Mora has improved the secondary a lot.” False. Ludicrous statement.
2. “Hire Mike Tomlin.” They’re doing so well this season, the Steelers would never let him go. Ever. Ludicrous statement.
3. “Cut Matt Hasselbeck…Josh Wilson.” Cutting Hass has its long-term merits, but how would that help us reload for 2009? And we’ve seen Wilson get better and better each week, not to mention he’s still very young. Ludicrous statement.
4. “Sign Matt Cassel.” Stupid decision, he hasn’t shown consistent excellence and its impossible to judge him individually when he has that great team around him. Ludicrous statement.
5. “Sign DeAngelo Hall.” First, he’s not a Ruskell guy. Second, five years is too much for this guy. Third, Mora was his coach in ATL and couldn’t stand the selfish kid. Ludicrous statement.
6. “Re-sign Leroy Hill for three years, 18 million.” Why in the world would Hill take that little money? Absurdly Ludicrous statement.
7. “Trade 2nd, 4th, and 5th rounders for Glenn Dorsey.” Chiefs aren’t trading Dorsey for one year, and we’re severely mortgaging our future by trading three picks. Ludicrous statement.
8. “Draft Crabtree.” I’m okay with this, but is he even coming out this year? I’ve heard rumors he isn’t, and even then, we’ve got other pressing needs like the O-line, Safety, and a future QB.
9. “Draft DT Fili Moala in the 3rd round.” If we just traded our 2nd, 4th, and 5th for Dorsey, and we already have Mebane, why would use our second-highest pick on another DT? We would have effectively used picks 2,3,4,5 all at a position where we need help, but can live with it for a while. Ludicrous statement.
Has this person ever watched the Hawks? Or any football for that matter?

Someone needs to tell this guy that the NFL isn't fantasy football

You mean people don't really sign free agents and deal them ten minutes later for draft picks?
But my entire Madden franchise is built around that strategy!
by BrianL on Dec 10, 2008 9:57 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, it's a great strategy for Madden
I once made enough trades to get 19 first round draft picks in one draft. That was kinda cool. Maybe the ’Hawks should just do that. Yaknow, build for the future.
by Jo-Jo on Dec 10, 2008 10:14 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
There's no way you could have done that.
NFL rules, and one that Madden happens to enforce in the game, prohibit teams from having more than 10 draft picks. The most I’ve ever gotten were about 7 or 8 first rounders, all of which were traded for more picks the next year.
by SeaTownBlueDevil on Dec 10, 2008 10:28 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
If you haven't figured it out, just sign guys for high salary with no signing bonus.
If you trade them, you eat the bonus. Make them happy with a massive one year contract and just saddle someone else with it. Hooray for Madden strategy!

The guy who wrote the article
really needs to join Field Gulls. I would love to hear some of his other Madden-derived opinions:
1) Acquire Peyton Manning, Adrian Peterson, and Larry Fitzgerald and three first round picks. Somehow, only give up Brian Russell.
2) One week later trade Manning, Peterson, Fitzgerald for more picks.
and of course:
3) Create a player. Make him 99 in every category.

How 'bout a 7'5", 400lb tailback with 4.23 speed and 99 on his acc and btk.
by Jo-Jo on Dec 10, 2008 10:41 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Better yet, give him 99 Kick Power and Kick Accuracy
and let him be running back and kicker. That’s how you build an NFL team.

Post draft tading is the key
You load up your 10 picks in the draft, then go after picks the other teams have made in the same draft.
Where there is a will there is a way. I lost my passion for that game after I pulled off that move. It was my goal to have a team of nothing but 1st round draft picks from a 5 year window. The game was no fun after that.
by Jo-Jo on Dec 10, 2008 10:36 AM PST reply actions 0 recs
Ah, that would be the way.
Same here. I always stock up on 1st round picks, but I’m always tired of them after one season. Though when I was younger, like Madden 2002 or something, I managed to keep a 1st round QB until I shattered every record known to man. Then again, I was playing on Rookie instead of Pro, All Pro or All Madden, and I never let my RB score. I was tossin 80-90 TD’s a year, and winning every game 60-3. I really don’t know how I had any fun doing that.
by SeaTownBlueDevil on Dec 10, 2008 10:44 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah I refuse to draft 23 year olds and I've usually traded off my stud RB's after 3 years.
The league leaders list is basically an Alumni team.

WOW
I’m exactly the same, I’ll only draft players 22 and under. Random and weird.
by SeaTownBlueDevil on Dec 10, 2008 1:51 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
trading for other team's first rounders usually takes a bit,
but they have to eat the guy’s signing bonus. Then you just cut them and resign them. They go from 5 years 55 mill to 7 years 28 mill. Ohhh madden.

You just need to know where to look
find the teams that have their first rounder as the number two on their depth chart and you’re golden.

That may be the single-worst article I have ever read.
Too much retardeness for me to even elaborate on. Thank you, though, for reminding me why I don’t read Bleacher Report.
Every day I hear about Seattle sports' failures. Every night I fall asleep to the sound of my own tears.
