Shaun Alexander Released
By now you know: This afternoon the Seahawks parted ways with the most successful running back in franchise history, Shaun Alexander (ESPN.com). Shaun made a typically classy parting statement to the city of Seattle, reprinted on the News-Trib's Seahawks Insider blog.
Hopefully you've read Mr. Morgan's eulogy above. I think it pretty much says it perfectly. There won't be another Seahawk like him.

Wait a second
I thought they would take a massive cap hit if they did not wait until June 1st.

Clarification
Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe that by releasing him before June 1st, we take a massive cap hit this year, but if we released him after June 1st, we take some of that massive cap hit this year, and the rest of it next year.

We don't have to wait till June 1st
to designate him a June 1st cut

If they can take the hit this year
it’d be smart to do so. Not sure where the Hawks are sitting cap wise, but if they can get their rookies signed and Alexander off the books by next year I’d like to see them do that.

Well Shaun
Thanks for the good seasons. You were a pretty neat guy.
Here’s to you being brought down by arm tackles while playing for a new team.

News always happens when I step out.
Guess no one wanted to trade for Alexander.

Bavasi wanted him.
But there was a logjam at DH/1B already.

well i guess that clears the way
for john’s lengthy piece on him.
nice of the ‘hawks to do it right in the middle of john’s draft previews.

I was sort of thinking the same thing.
Here I am researching second day tight ends and *BAM! – Hawks cut Alexander. Now, this is so not news for me…but he was a great player and I want to give him his due. I don’t think anyone wants a Jermichael Finley V. Craig Stevens smackdown with Bernard’s trial and now this, but to me JF V. CS is real football news and this is all nonsense, a foregone conclusion, private matters, etc.
So, I’ll get to work on that Alexander retrospective.

I was thinking of doing
something semi-satirical, but still respectful. Had an idea. But don’t let me stop you. Or start you. Or something. I drink caffeine.

Wouldn't exactly say this is a miracle.
We all knew this was coming.

Not if he was on the Mariners. :(

John Olerud Sucks
against Vegas reliever Casey Hoorelbeke, whose ancestors clearly couldn't spell Hurlbeck properly.

YES!!!
Oh yeah, see ya Shaun.
Do you guys think any team would want to sign him?
See ya Shaun.

Oops
Meant to say pro football team….I’m assuming that’s why you mentioned the Lions.
See ya Shaun.

How ironic is it?
That I change my signature last night, and then all of a sudden Shaun gets cut.
The key about this is there is no need to get rid of Mo Morris IMO.
See ya Shaun.

I would like to see us
Draft a back and trade Morris personally. The depth of the running back class this year is such that we can find a steal in the later rounds. Personally I like that Central Florida kid. Not very big but could be an excellent complete back for the West Coast offense. If we can trade Morris for a 4th or 5th rounder and pick up Kevin Smith, Chauncey Washington, or Mike Hart (I know about the injury/size issues, but the guy can freakin’ play and is a tough dude. IMO he really turned the season around for UM after that horrendous start.) Smith is supposed to go earlier rather than than the other two, but Washington and Hart are ranked really really low.
Keeping it futile...

wow sweet grammar
**If we can trade Morris for a 4th or 5th Rounder and pick up Kevin Smith, Chauncey Washington, or Mike Hart, I would be very happy.

Building for the future then
I still think Morris can be used for kick returns like he used to do.
He’s undeniably a fan favorite.
See ya Shaun.

He was a terrible kick returner
and we already have Burleson and Wilson to do that. I’d love to see him traded for a 5th rounder to fill out this years draft. That’s probably a bit high for him though,

Such an inglorious end
On USSMariner.com, they’re mentioning the extended goodbyes that the Mariners have made for their over-the-hill stars, like Olerud, Edgar, etc.
It’d be nice if the Hawks could give Alexander a “Final Touchdown” on a one-yard dive play.
Rather than a trip to the glue factory.
M, period. Fresh, comma.

Shaun had his chances
Unlike the Mariners this team actually has a chance at winning

by Scruffy Lefty on Apr 22, 2008 4:41 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Exactly.
When the Mariners were giving those sendoffs, they were way out of contention. A winning sports team like the Seahawks can’t afford to do that.
Now if Alexander isn’t working come game 1, you better believe he’ll be at Qwest to raise the 12th man flag.
by BrianL on Apr 22, 2008 5:24 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Unfortunately
football is far too cut throat for that to happen. He’ll get a place on the ring of honor, and he’ll raise the 12th man flag at some point. We’ll have plenty of opportunites to celebrate his career.

Not-amusing Shaun Alexander story.
My mother is a huge college football fan, so every Saturday we’d have football on growing up. My younger brother (about 3/4) at the time was named Alexander, our neighbors son named Shaun would come over on Saturdays.
You probably see where this is going.
When the TV announcers would say “Shaun Alexander” (especially against LSU), the two youngsters would get really, really confused and assume they were in trouble.
(lame story, sorry…)
