Ahem, All Questions Answered Thread
Update: That about wraps it up. Thanks everyone for participating. Obviously, I'm working all weekend, so I'm taking today to celebrate my birthday. See you all bright and early tomorrow morning. And check back here for a link to my final mock draft.
We're up again. Hooray!! But it seems rather silly to cram everything I want into today. So, here's what I'm going to do. From now until 1pm I'll open this up for an All Questions Answered thread. Now, I'm not an expert or anything, but I have been researching this draft with roughly every free second of my life for the past 2 1/2 months, so I have some ideas, info. There's too much to write a formal post on all of it. If possible, I'd like to keep things to the draft. I'll close questions ~1pm, but will answer until I'm finished. And if I don't know something, I'm just going to have to say so. Cool with everyone? Let's start this.
On a separate note, I've agreed to post my final mock draft over at Seahawks.net. When it's up, I'll provide a link.
Finally, I'll be blogging the entire draft. So there's that. Yeah.

Why is everyone so down on Frank Okam?
Last year he was projected as a top 10 DT?
against Vegas reliever Casey Hoorelbeke, whose ancestors clearly couldn't spell Hurlbeck properly.

I think that's a little overblown...
by that I mean, I think him being pushed down boards is a little overblown. He’s what I call a Mock Draft faller, someone whose most recent press has been bad, so those who run mock drafts have soured on. That most recent press emanates from accusations of inconsistency and laziness from the East-West Shrine game.
Realistically, I think Okam is still well ahead of players like Red Bryant, and just a shade below that second class of tackles, Pat Sims, Dre Moore and Trevor Laws. Early second day pick, I think.

The second and third season were the peak.
It’s weird, they were on such a roll, but as soon as the 4th season started (the current season) things were just way too over the top and completely unbelievable. The shows success has always hinged on it being partly believable, but the 4th season has completely thrown that out the window. It was ghastly before the writer’s strike, and has been only just bearable since it’s been back.
I’m about to give up on it for good.

Funny how success or failure can ruin a show.
Like Arrested Development, I loved the first season, but the ratings were so bad, I think they started pressing, trying to develop catch phrases or overly define the characters till they were just stereotypes of themselves. Tobias makes gay innuendo. Job became incredibly stupid, something he wasn’t originally. The fire just seemed to go out. Still very good, but that first season promised so much more.

Two possibilities
One, very good chance he’s available at the Hawks natural #2. He’s a real Mock Draft jumper. If you survey some pre combine draft guides, you’ll see Laws was consistently ranked 3 rd+, often ++, like 6-7 to NDFA.
Now, say a team like the Bears want him in the second, the Seattle might move up to grab him. I think Seattle goes wild during this draft. Blazers fans will remember 2007, where they worked every angle to get the best value from the draft. Paul Allen is the man behind the man, and I think his input will be felt. I think Seattle does a lot of maneuvering and if they want Laws, they’ll do what it takes to get him. If they want Laws, something I’m still not sure about.

This is what I’m wondering about. I haven’t heard Ruskell say anything about safety. Is he just sparing Russell’s feelings? Or is there some chance this position isn’t a high priority for them?
Is it just me, or is this AJ trade looking worse every day?

Well...
No GM is going to be open about who he wants or how he sees a need. The team has visited with a few safeties, so it’s a position they’re looking into. I think the key is that that safety must be able to stay back. It sounds simple, but a lot of players are so undisciplined, they want to jump, get into the fray, and Ruskell really emphasizes someone who holds that soft shell. That’s one of the reasons I like Hefney. He stays back, keeps deep coverage, but can bolt up and make a play in run support.

USC S J. Silva
What do you think about J. Silva? I think he would be an incredible pick in the 6th or 7th round. This guy can flat out play (150+ tackles and 8 Ints. last year), but his big “downfall” is his height—5’10”. I don’t buy it, he is on Ruskell’s board. Do you think he is?
by Christopher R. Mattix on Apr 25, 2008 10:31 AM PDT 0 recs
Jamie Silva, from BC?
I think the bigger knock on Silva is his athleticism. He’s a good notch below what a team wants as far as athleticism in a safety. He’s slow, sure, but that isn’t huge for me, it’s more about change of direction, recovery, and…well let me put it like this. If he were there in the 6th or 7th, great, worst case scenario he’s a solid special teams contributor and super sub safety, but his hype is mounting and some team might jump on him a little early. I think he could be a very good player, but athleticism is pretty huge in the secondary. You’re not always going to make the right read and the ability to recover is pretty essential.
It all comes down to where he goes.

Jamie Silva
I have watched him play some ball, and I just don’t see that big of a knock on him. He is very, very intelligent back there. If you are as smart as he is on plays you don’t need to be as athletic. He is always, I mean always involved in plays, hence the 150 tackles, leading all at the safety position (if I’m not mistaken). We know Ruskell likes character guys a lot, and leadership is also a big part. Silva was one of the main leaders on his team, and if you take away the combine and athleticism and purely look at his game, it is undoubted that this guy can flat out play. He reminds me a lot of the “knocks” against Tatupu. If anyone will take a chance on this guy, it will be Ruskell. I think this makes this pick very possible. Plus, we know we need youth back there, and Silva reminds me a lot of Russell, always in the right place at the right time (although he has aged) and Silva could learn a lot from this. Silva also was the team leader in ST tackles. I think we would have great use for him.

If Bohm is there at 25, will the seahawks
most likely not take him at all, trade the pick to a team that wants bohm, or take bohm themselves?
by redwolf75 on Apr 25, 2008 10:37 AM PDT 0 recs
I've been meaning to ask this myself.
I’ve seen a number of mocks have him falling out of the first round entirely. If he’s available at 25, do the Hawks consider him the best available player?

If he's there, I think they trade down.
He’s more valuable to a team thinking QB this year. His transition should be pretty smooth, so a smart team looking for instant value would be wise to jump on him.
Still, I just can’t believe he’ll be there. Brohm has roughly everything you can want in a Qb, including fast healing. His injury concerns are overblown. Excepting Favre, no Qb is nails. They survive by avoiding big hits, not by being bad asses.
I took Brohm because he was best available talent and I couldn’t trade down. Otherwise, he’s a great value at 25, but not exactly what Seattle needs.

A lot of people seem to think
that if the Hawks take a DT at 25, it would be Kentwan Balmer over Laws. Are the Seahawks even interested in Balmer?
by BrianL on Apr 25, 2008 10:46 AM PDT 0 recs
Not that I know of.
Not since the combine. Seattle could be playing coy, but I don’t see what about Balmer’s game the Hawks would want. Not to be dismissive of my colleague, but the Balmer in the first thing seems like a rope of sand. Basically, as I’ve before said, DT is thought of as the Hawks biggest need and Balmer the best talent available at that pick, and from this all else blooms.

Frank Hughes
had some really interesting information on how the Hawks view “one hit wonders” like Balmer or Devin Thomas. Ruskell said:
“"We have a grade in our grading scale that is called 6.0. What the grade says is that this is a talented guy. He has the level of talent to play in the National Football League at a high level but he has not produced on a consistent basis for whatever reason. Even though they will be ranked from 1-10, they will be at the 6 which is first-round capability, we tend not to take those guys where they are ranked because they are hit or miss prospects. Philosophically over there years we have said, ‘Don’t even look at those guys until the third round.’ Some teams don’t feel that way and those guys go, but we weren’t going to take the risks until the third round and that is how we compensate for that."”
The whole thing is here and he has a couple other posts where he’s talked about it.

Character Guys
I am a big proponent of T. Laws and J. Carlson. What about DE Marcus Dixon from Hampton. He has a great story, its just up to a team wanting to take a shot at him.
by Christopher R. Mattix on Apr 25, 2008 10:49 AM PDT 0 recs
It's an interesting story, I'll say that.
I think the character Ruskell values is professionalism and what is colloquially called “heart”. What I would call “drive”. I don’t think Dixon fits the scheme. Other than that, I haven’t looked into him too deeply.

That’s a good thing to distinguish: heart and drive. A team player is #1. I think Dixon is a very, very interesting player, and I think of all players drafted he will be the less likely to get in trouble, from what I have read, he is really a changed person. He would be a great player and be loved by the team, but as far as talent and ability at the NFL level, I have no idea, he is solid, but not at all great. But we need to get someone for P. Kerney to train.

Decent, well rounded, athletic.
I think a little overrated because of the overall lack of talent at TE in this year’s draft. A little loose with his route running. Decent in the open field. Not super agile, but good feet, balance. A solid tight end with decent upside, but could use a little polish.

Have you heard anything about DE Andy Studebaker from Wheaton?
A. Studebaker had 18 sacks his junior year but got injured this last year. He is from a div. III school, so that lowers his chance of being drafted very high, probably in the 7th. He was rated as a possible 2nd rounder last year (that would be the highest player drafted from that level of schools. He had a minor injury last year that kept him out of about half of the season. But he completely and utterly dominates his position, he had near 60 qb hurries last season! I know him personally so that is where my interest comes from. Likely you know nothing about him, but it could be fun to see him picked up. His character is absolutely not in doubt, his leadership is not either, but can his game translate in the NFL?

You think the Seahawks are looking at the S position as a possible first day pick?
I’m thinking 3rd round. I hope so, Russell isn’t the answer.
by marinator on Apr 25, 2008 12:28 PM PDT 0 recs
I think they are looking from someone late.
To me, Russell worked, so to speak, in Seattle’s system because athletically, the Hawks’ FS wasn’t asked to do too much. The position has been deemphasized. Seattle has strong cover corners, so they don’t need an omnipresent LaRon Landry type. They need someone who is disciplined in coverage and able to run up at deliver the hit in run support. That’s something they can get in a later round, a solid coverage safety with some open field tackling ability. A Silva or Hefney.

What's your take on Dennis Dixon?
I see SEA taking a new QB, this way they open up a reciever in Seneca Wallace for trick plays, like the ones Holmgren teased us with when he announced this’d be his last year. Plus I think D.D. could be amazing once he’s healed, and what better place to rehab than the UofO in college? Once Hass hits the hay on his final season I think D.D. could be ready to be a franchise QB, Thoughts?
Why? Because the Seahawks rock my socks.
by Chickadee on Apr 25, 2008 12:41 PM PDT 0 recs
When I watched Dixon...
I didn’t see a pro level Qb. He lost his starting spot to Leaf his junior season, something we shouldn’t forget. Now, maybe he made a miraculous leap between his junior and senior season, but I think it’s more likely that OU’s OL improved. He’s an interesting pure talent, but I have no idea where he slots in the NFL, but I’ll say that if he ever plays QB, I’ll be surprised.

I am enamored with this guy, talent is just gushing from him. But does Mora really want to go down the same road as with Vick? I have a feeling that he is enjoying the WCO with a stationary QB. I think the guy Mora wants is Tim Tebow in two years. That would be the best time for Hass to groom a future star. Hass has 3 to 5 years left in his tank, I think that is probable. In 3 to 5 years both Seneca and Frye would be a little too old to compete for the “franchise” QB tag, but Tebow certainly would.
