Pretty Fucking Impressed With the Hawks' Draft
I'm not a draft expert and don't play one on the internets, but I am Pretty Fucking Impressed with Ruskell and Co's draft. With their picks in Rounds 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6, they appear to have drafted guys who, at the very least, are all excellent shots to make the roster. Not bad for a 4-time defending division champion sitting near the bottom of most rounds.

1st. Lawrence Fucking Jackson, DE
Probably doesn't knock out Tapp for a starting spot, but that hardly matters since they envision a 7-8 man rotation on the line. Maybe Ruskell and Holmgren held out to see if RB Mendenhall fell to them. He didn't, so Seattle shrewdly traded down and still got their man. Other teams probably slept on him at that spot since DE wasn't a "need" for the Hawks. Well done.
2nd. John Fucking Carlson, TE
Moves right to the top of the depth chart. Ruskell and Holmgren were willing to trade away their pick in the 3rd round, a round they covet, so they think highly of this guy. If he turns into the TE they've been looking for all these years we can thank King Salmonella, or he might not have fallen to 38.
4th. Joseph "Red" Fucking Bryant, DT
Massive run-stuffer comes in and immediately competes for a starting spot, with Tubbs a perennial injury concern and Rocky acting like Jake LaMotta. Was at Jacob Green's house when he got drafted...that's got to be good juju.
5th. Owen Fucking Mask-Buster Schmitt, FB
This pick was from the Cowboys for trading back in the 1st round, so if you still want to whine about trading the 3rd rounder to get Carlson, this is your answer. My first reaction was, "FB? wtf." But if this guy turns out to be the smash-mouth pure fullback badass everyone's making him out to be, then it will be another Ruskell mid-round steal. Immediate speculation was that he might displace Weaver but I think that's very premature. Either way, he seems destined for no worse than backup FB, and that's pretty damn good for moving back 3 spots and still getting your guy in the first round.
6th. Tyler Fucking Schmitt, LS!?!
Go Aztecs!! Like fellow Montezuma Mesa alum Kevin O’Connell, had everyone saying, "Who?" when his name was announced. Even the indefatigable Mike Mayock couldn't recall if a long snapper had ever been drafted before. Say what you want about possibly being available in the 7th round, but they wanted the guy and pulled the trigger. If he pans out they've added a ST starter and young battery-mate to go with Plack and Olindo Mare/Cuotu. A welcome end to the revolving LS door since the injury to J.P. Darche.
7th. Justin Fucking Forsett? RB
Who the fuck knows? A longshot to make the roster, but it's speculated that the team will move Mo Mo out since his role is filled by Julius Jones. If so, maybe the scat-back Forsett makes the team as a KR/ST guy.
edit: This strikes me as the only throwaway of the draft. Maybe it's kind of a Darren Sproles pick and they see him returning kickoffs, as Morris has proven to be no threat as a KR. I'm still not convinced Morris has been deemed expendable so I'd be surprised to see this guy make anything but the practice squad. Was there really no O-lineman or linebacker they liked here?
7th. Brandon What-the-Fucking Coutu, K
These Bulldog coeds thoroughly enjoyed Mr. Cuoto's kickoffs and PATS, so... hmm. Will have to beat out Olindo Mare. The team really must not have thought much of the remaining available O-lineman or Linebackers. Look for a couple of undrafted FA's to actually compete for spots at those positions in training camp. People will slam the last two picks, fairly so, EXCEPT if the kicker ends up being a stud, in which case this class would be very good indeed. I'll be rooting for the kid to beat out the old man but doubt it.
update: Undrafted FA's:
S Jamar Adams , Michigan
CB Donovan Alexander , North Dakota
WR Travis Brown , New Mexico
WR Michael Bumpus, Washington State
LB Matt Castelo , San Jose State
G Dustin Dickinson, Houston
CB DeMichael Dizer, Grambling
LB David Hawthorne, Texas Christian
S Kelin Johnson, Georgia
T William Robinson , San Diego State
WR Anthony Russo , Washington
S Eric Wicks, West Virginia
Adams looks interesting, and possibly Robinson (go Aztecs!!).

Okay, here's the thing.
Nudity doesn’t bother me, but it’s really not appropriate here.

Is that picture of Forsett accurate?
Or is it the magic of angles and camera lenses that makes him look like a top heavy gimp?
Fans are typically idiots.

I don't think it was that great
The first day was okay, the second not so much. We wasted two picks on a longsnapper and a kicker, do not agree with that one bit.

Mildy
You can’t edit a poll, apparently, so y’all just gonna have to be “mild-y” fucking impressed.

love the pics, especially the one that isnt there anymore :(
Anyways I think people are going to far to the extremes with the Hawks draft. I don’t think it was an “A” draft, but it was not bad by any means. In fact I can safely that the Hawks final draft grade should be in the top 1/3 of the NFL. I’d give them a B+.
Jackson, Carlson, Bryant, Schmitt (owen and tyler) are all NFL ready players that will contribute in 2008, with Jackson and Carlson likely starting. Bryant add depth to the DL that was needed, Tubbs might only be playing 10-15 plays a game…so adding Bryant was huge.
The Hawks just got a lot better over the past 2 days.

John Czarnecki would disagree with you...
He gave us a C-, second worst in the NFC

??
“DE Lawrence Jackson had 17 tackles behind the line of scrimmage in 2007, the most since Kenechi Udeze had 26 in 2003 for the Trojans. The Seahawks were talking about taking a quarterback at one time with this pick, but backed off that decision.”
What pick? A QB with the first-rounder? The fuck is he talking about…

Just remember where I saw that...
Farnsworth wrote in his pre-draft piece that the Hawks would stick to their board, “Even if the pick turns out to be a head scratcher, like Louisville quarterback Brian Brohm.” So either this guy just read Clare’s piece or the FO was putting out serious disinfo.

the national media isn't going to like our draft
a C-, doesn’t surprise me at all. They gave us D’s last year and C-’s in 2005.

I just don't know what to think yet
classic Ruskell, but man, we needed to get a W.Jones replacement trained up
Why? Because the Seahawks rock my socks.

Completely Irrelevant
But I asked Darryl Tapp what he thought of the draft yesterday when he stopped by my store. He said he liked that we were getting players to win now then spent the next 5 minutes ripping on the Rams with me. Such a cool guy.
by Robert on Apr 28, 2008 7:24 AM PDT 0 recs
That's pretty cool
Tapp seems like a pretty solid guy from what little I know about him.

Heard an interview with Ruskell today
on Softy’s radio show. I missed the very beginning where he talked about LoJack (he did mention later that he expects Jackson to compete for a starting spot), but heres what he said about the rest of the picks:
Carlson – Complete package, can block, can catch, yada yada yada, everything you’ve been hearing about him from John and others.
Red – Said he was happy to get the big road grader type DT, and was very happy to get him in the 4th. Felt that Red is the kind of player they’ve been missing lately.
Owen Schmitt – He seemed really excited for Schmitt, I was kind of surprised. Loved his versatility, can block, run well in short yardage, catch the ball, and can contribute to ST. Said he expected him to compete for the starting FB spot, but also said that Weaver and Schmitt are two players you want on your team.
Tyler Schmitt – Said he was a special LS, loved his athleticism and ability to contribute on kick and punt coverage as well. He said other teams were targeting him and seemed very sure that he wouldn’t have been around for their 7th round pick.
Coutu – Said they brought him in and checked him out, and that his hamstring was fine, didn’t seem worried about that in the least. About his kick offs, he said that Georgia was doing a lot of directional kicking and pooch type kick offs that really hurt his numbers. They sent Bruce DeHaven down to work him out and they feel he has plenty of leg strength.
Obviously Ruskell likes these guys, otherwise he wouldn’t have picked them, but I felt better about the two Schmitts and Coutu after listening to him. Unfortunately Softy was too busy talking about Dustin Keller and Devin Thomas to ask Ruskell about not grabbing an OT, I would have liked to hear a little on that .

Good to hear about Coutu.
I’m in a poor spot to evaluate a kicker for obvious reasons. I hope he is what others say he is.

Im the most excited about owen schmitt
I dont know why, but he just seems to have the right attitude for being a bad ass fullback. Seems to be able to run, catch and people say he can block too.
I hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence, or insanity to anyone, but they've always worked for me.

Kind of surprising they took him despite his hamstring problems the last 2 years...
...but I assume they checked him out and felt like he was past that. I do hope he wins the job because Mare has gotten a bit inconsistent in his “old” age.
Also, this is the first draft I can remember since Holmgren arrived that they didn’t pick or sign a QB. They must like Frye pretty well.

++ for the diary
I didn’t read this for a while just because I thought “fucking” was a cheap adjective….then I read the rest of it. I said I was Pretty Fucking Impressed, because now going into the season the only real question marks on the entire team are the wide receiver and OL depth. That’s pretty good!
by Will Kier on Apr 29, 2008 3:25 PM PDT 0 recs
Thanks
“Fucking” is a cheap adjective but it makes me smile. Plus this place needs to be a little edgier… a football site shouldn’t be getting its ass kicked by a baseball site.
