Do you think Ruskell makes this pick?

by Robert on Apr 9, 2008 9:29 AM PDT reply actions

Yes.
They've scouted him, so he's on their radar, but I really doubt he falls this far.

by John Morgan on Apr 9, 2008 9:34 AM PDT up reply actions

If he is still on the board at 25
I'll be delighted, not that we have a quarterback of the future but that we will be in a strong position to trade. In an ideal world, Atlanta pass on Ryan and decide to give up a couple of 2nd rounders to grab Brohm and we end up in a spot to secure Laws along with a quality receiver. The A grade was well deserved though John, you made a very strong argument.

Ugh John
You've now scared the hell out of me that a QB we like won't fall to us and we are doomed in 2012.

by Justise on Apr 9, 2008 9:45 AM PDT reply actions

This is a pick...
that I didn't really like last night when you mentioned it, but the more I think of it, the more comfortable I am with it.

To be honest, I'd be fine with Kenny Phillips or Laws here, but to avoid a rebuilding phase... that's pretty huge.

I'm looking forward to this draft.

Good Pick
In the real draft I doubt this would happen. With what you dealt with this of course this was a great pick. In the real draft I see Ruskell waiting to see if that top OG or WR's fall to us. If not he trades down and grabs Laws, Top TE, and/or Caldwell.

by maxthedrummer on Apr 9, 2008 10:40 AM PDT reply actions

So the question is
if Brohm's sitting there and the Falcons call to offer #37 and #48 for him (as you postulated in your "birthday mock"), do you take him, or do you deal him?

by The Ancient Mariner on Apr 9, 2008 11:18 AM PDT reply actions

You Deal Him
Although I want to see the Hawks go through little to no rebuilding as possible over the next few seasons the fact remains that the window is closing for a real strong Super Bowl run. If we have three 2nd rounders then we can fill TE, WR, DT, and/or OG without reaching in the first round.

by maxthedrummer on Apr 9, 2008 11:25 AM PDT reply actions

I suppose
the idea of a QB called "Booty" is sufficiently terrifying that I can go with this.

by Will Kier on Apr 9, 2008 11:43 AM PDT reply actions

Dont like it.
I still feel Phillips would help this team out more.  I also see that 2:1, readers of this website agree with me.
Anyone wanna play WoW?

seneca falls
If they draft Brohm, does Wallace move to WR?  Seems like he could contribute more than a second rounder would, and having Frye plus Brohm could make that possible?  Almost like getting an extra draft pick that helps the team right away -- but only if you trust the Frye/Brohm combo as a backup in September.

by brdlnd on Apr 9, 2008 12:21 PM PDT reply actions

seneca falls?
Isn't that where one of the first feminist rallys was?

We don't know how well Frye has been doing.

He may already figure as a QB of the future...

I don't think Seneca would be that great at WR. He is a nice athlete and all but can he run a route? I somehow think if was such a blue-chip WR he would have gone down that road a while ago. I sort of doubt he could take the pounding of playing every snap at WR.

you guys should consider Obomanu, Taylor, Kent, and Payne as your WR options if we don't draft or trade for one.

Isn't the going rate for star WR's a 4th round pick =) I'd let go of that for Chad Johnson.

I don't think Brohm falls this far
Thus I would take Phillips

I agree
I like the scenario that has Brohm falling to us but I'm not drinking that koolaid. That being said I'm one of the many hopping on the trade out out of the 1st round bandwagon. However I do like the idea of picking up a qb in this draft. I'm curious what the opinion is of Josh Johnson from USD. I know his passing at the combine was shaky but I think there are a few teams very high on him.

Ha, that's funny
With the next pick on Mocking the Draft, the Jags take Trevor Laws.  So much for him being a reach at 25!

by Strang on Apr 9, 2008 3:13 PM PDT reply actions

The more I see,
the more convinced I am that Laws won't make it to Atlanta's second round pick.  He may not even make it to Seattle's first pick, there are some projections with him going to the Titans 24th.

Laws provides the biggest upgrade today of any of the players expected to be available at 25.  The Seahawks appear to have a win now, defense first attitude, and he'd certainly fit that mold.  The odds that Phillips can step in, in his first year, and make a positive difference seems less than the odds of a DT being able to do that.  And the Hawks still need depth on their d-line.

If we're expecting Hasselbeck to retire in 2011, that leaves 3 (4? is his contract through the 2011 season or does it end before it?) seasons left.  It'd be hard to justify spending a first round pick on him just to have him sit for 3 years.  I know thats how it used to happen, and maybe how it should happen, but you can't lock up that much money on someone that isn't playing in today's NFL.  You could make it work, but I don't see the need to go down that road quite yet.

by Nate Dogg on Apr 9, 2008 4:36 PM PDT up reply actions

His contract expires 2010
If Hasselbeck is hurt at any point, and Seneca or Frye is the replacement, no defense in the world will propel Seattle to a championship. Hasselbeck takes a lot of hits, too. Seattle needs a real Qb of the future. The more I thought about it, the more convinced I was that it had to be either Brohm or Booty and I could see Booty being taken very early in round three. The special talent squeezed out of the first day rarely lasts long in the second. Also, Booty has, what?, two dozen starts? I like the guy, but he's not nearly the sure thing Brohm is.

I must say, I'm very happy for Trevor Laws. I hope all this internet goodwill carries over to the draft.

by John Morgan on Apr 9, 2008 4:46 PM PDT up reply actions

Laws
I don't!  I hope he enters a free fall like none other and the Seahawks grab him in the seventh.

But I'm selfish like that.

Didn't everybody think
Rick Mirer was a "sure thing"? And Ryan Leaf?
"I think we know who the 'Hawks true rival is"-John Morgan

by Coach Owens on Apr 9, 2008 9:52 PM PDT up reply actions

I was a kid when Leaf was drafted...
and I even I knew he was bust-city. Typical one year wonder, "can make all the throws" pick. I don't know about Mirer.

by John Morgan on Apr 10, 2008 3:33 AM PDT up reply actions

yeah
Ryan Leaf was a pretty obvious bust, I was 12 and didn't know football very well and I knew he'd be bad.

Mirer was a little different.  I don't think he was a one year wonder, but he had a pretty low completion percentage while at ND if I'm not mistaken.  Bill Walsh did say he was the next Joe Montana though.

Mirer was probably an obvious bust, but not nearly as obvious as Leaf.

by MFAN on Apr 10, 2008 11:03 AM PDT up reply actions

I understand it, and even like it..
But part of me still wanted Phillips a bit more, just because I feel like he can immediately impact the defense. But good pick, I definitely like the idea of solidifying the most important position for years to come.
Let's go.

by J Hens on Apr 10, 2008 12:08 AM PDT reply actions

Would Phillips be an immediate upgrade....

Over Russell?  I mean, he will certainly be an upgrade in a year or two but could he step into an NFL defense and be an immediate starter over him this year?  We can survive next season with Russell and still make a championship run, but I guess my concern is that, if Phillips is not an immediate and substantial upgrade to our D why use a #1 pick on him, if the justification for doing it is that our current window of contention will be closing soon?

Whereas, if we use our pick on Brohm we are prepared for a future where our running game is no longer the dominant force it once was, and we can rely on our QB to deliver wins to us instead of just managing as best he can.
