Seahawks @ Chargers AQA Podcast
We're not yet to the point where I can fill a show with caller interaction, but answering questions and responding to commentary is the goal of the Field Gulls podcast. So, with what looks like a busy day ahead of me, I wanted to open a thread for everyone to post their questions, comments and give me a foundation for tomorrow's podcast. That way I can research the answers today and tomorrow before posting a deluxe gameday edition of the podcast.
I'm shooting for an hour of solid Seahawks takes covering who needs to step up, who can sit pretty, who has their job on the line and who doesn't stand a chance.

Your family is up in Bellingham?
Well when the hell are you coming up here?
I think when the regular season starts I’m going to start calling in. Going from a wedding to buying your first home hasn’t left me with much free time.

Mo & Jones
I’d love to hear a compare & contrast analysis of Mo and Jones. They seem very similar to me but I’m not technical football savvy enough to really distinguish what separates them.

Couple things
John could you give us a run down of what we can realistically expect from the receivers on the roster, branch and engram included, production-wise? The lack of reps between the receivers and Hass in the pre-season, and the overall youth of the group just has me worried.
I feel like the defense is going to be setting up a lot of our scoring opportunities.
Also, our offensive line depth is so precarious, is the offense in a huge amount of trouble if a major injury strikes the line? Say Wahle, Locklear, or – heaven forbid – Jones goes down and misses significant time… Does this cripple our offense ? I feel like Hasselbeck is at an age where any amount of punishment he is forced to take is too much. And our backups on the line seem like they would be sorely outmatched against 1st/2nd team defenses for 4 straight quarters.

ok
- Keeping a 3rd QB (Frye) that won’t contribute at all this season vs keeping 5 DEs (Atkins & Babin) who will at the very least contribute on special teams and perhaps more.
- Could Obo be the odd man out if the WR depth with everyone healthy looks like: Burleson/Kent, Engram/Payne, Branch/Taylor. Bumpus on the PS.
- Adams vs Wallace.
- Though this looks like an extremely tough team to make this year, the prospects of keeping a kicker for FGs and a kicker for kickoffs? (Mare is a nice weapon there). And what is more likely; Coutu is safe on the PS if we end up needing him? or Mare to remain a free agent if we cut him and end up needing him? With this defense, especially at home I like the thought of teams having to start on the 20.
- Herring, PUP vs IR. Dude needs to take care of himself first and foremost and I don’t see a spot for him on this years roster if he is able to make it back at this point.
- the prospects for 5-star recruit/4 year starter at USC Lawrence Jackson this year? Playing on a dline where Kerney will demand help from backs and TEs, Bernard and Mebane will warrant more oline attention, Hill and Peterson ahve to be accounted for as well, and Jackson will be able to do his thing while being forgotten by most teams. Lets just say it is a very favorable situation, especially with the jump the dline gets @ Qwest.

Undrafted free agents
One of the things that I have wondered about is how common it is to have undrafted free agents successfully make the roster. In a world where 6th and 7th round choices seem to often land on the PS or be dropped altogether, I didn’t think there was much quality left after the draft. But then Hawthorne and Adams show up with at least the former making the team and maybe both. They seem to both have expected to be drafted, but there are probably a lot of guys that had unrealistic expectation on draft day. Does anyone know if Ruskell saw those 2 particular guys left after the draft and said, “Holy crap, I can’t believe that I can just go sign those guys!” If so, picking a long snapper and kicker looks a little less controversial since he was able to get 2 guys pushing for roster spots at regular positions. Is there any information on how many undrafted free agents make 53 man rosters on average each year?
I won’t be able to catch the podcast so it would be great to see a regular post on this as well. thanks!

NFC breakdown
I live in the south and keep hearing how NY, Dallas, Washington, Philly, NO, Carolina, GB, Minn, and even TB are better than the Seahawks. I read other self-inflated Seahawk blogs and am not looking to hear that the Seahawks are the best football team ever, but 10th best in the NFC? How would you break down the team talent in the NFC?
by Havik on Aug 24, 2008 3:55 PM PDT 0 recs
The only team in that has better talent is Dallas
But Dallas could at any moment self implode. But I’ll let John do the bigger run down.

Fucking preposterous
That’s big ol bullshit. This team is better than the ’05 Hawks and they made the super bowl. Seattle can beat any of those on any given sunday and dominate many of those.
Why? Because the Seahawks rock my socks.

At this point back in 2005...
I think the Seahawks back then were flying under the radar (not that its any different now). Lofa was a rookie, yet to establish himself. No one knew who Leroy Hill was.
I think that the offense now as a whole is a step down from 05, but the defense in my opinion is far and away a better unit now. I’d take this team and hope that by the end of the year Red Bryant, John Carlson, and Lawrence Jackson have taken the jump that Lofa, Hill and Tubbs did back in 2005.

Yes, defense is most definitely better, although I don't think it makes
up for the huge difference in offense.

Let's not get too overconfident here.
Hutch, Walt in his prime, Shaun in his prime, younger ’beck, etc.
I really don’t think it’s close.

More NFC breakdown
Also, it seems that the Seahawks are sliding down some rankings for no apparent reason. Would the WR/RB drama have anything to do with it? Rookie TE? All I see is a plethora of depth.
And I agree with Scruffy

John, I wanna hear
Which NFL starting QB’s are less desirable than Charlie Frye? Or at least which ones on other teams that are in contention for a starting position? By the way on Madden ’09 Hass was rated as, I think, a 93 while Seneca was an 81 and Frye an 80. Thoughts?
P.S. I’m still pissed that Madden won’t let you play any player at any position reguardless of how suck they’d be there. I.E. no Seneca at WR/KR possible.
Why? Because the Seahawks rock my socks.

o-line
What’s the Lock/Willis situation at RT. Is Willis going to suck?
How has Sims looked at RG?
What’s going on at Center?
Thanks John.

Revisit your predictions!
John, while we’re only halfway through the preseason, at some point I’d like to hear you revisit your preseason predictions — http://www.fieldgulls.com/2008/6/27/560412/five-fearless-preseason-pr.
Is Mare on track to beat out Coutu?
Has Kent lived up to your ‘incredible’ expectations?
When is Carlson going to break out?
…probably no need to revisit your 5th prediction, though.

Courtney Taylor
Holmgren has been quoted as saying that he expects his starting flanker to lead the team in receptions. Does Taylor have that kind of ability and what will his role be both at the start of the season and when Branch and/or Engram return? Do you think it’s possible that, even with Branch’s projected return at mid-season, that Taylor could achieve that feat (receptions leader) even though he may face a reduced role as the WR corp gets healthier? Finally, are any of the other young WRs poised to usurp the flanker spot, specifically, if Taylor performs below expectations or will he be given a lengthy chance to learn and develop while starting?
I would love to hear about the WR positions and how our players fit those; regarding primary positions or secondary positions, and overall versatility within the passing offense. Also how might an individual’s ability to block down field or in the run-game may help certain WRs earn significant playing time.

How has Ruskell Dealt with Guard Play?
There’s little sense in comparing the current guard situation to what we had with a younger Hutch and a still-effective Chris Gray. Nevertheless, taking Hutchinson’s departure as a starting point, how do you rate Ruskell’s performance in shoring up the position since that time? What is your take on how the Seahawk guards will fare this year, taking depth into consideration?
Also, Rob Sims is a guy you spent a good amount of time analyzing last season, the result being guarded optimism about his promise (iirc). How far has he come this off-season? How is he handling the transition from left to right side? Does the fact that I haven’t heard much suggest that he’s reached the level of competence where most interior linemen are rendered invisible? (If so, that bodes well for us I should think.)
