Quick Cap: Projecting Seattle Seahawks 53 Man Roster

Let's get right down to business. Here's how I see the final 53 shaking out.

Offense

QB: Matt Hasselbeck, Seneca Wallace, Charlie Frye

FB: Leonard Weaver, Owen Schmitt

RB: Julius Jones, Maurice Morris, TJ Duckett, Justin Forsett

TE: Jeb Putzier, John Carlson, Will Heller

WR: Courtney Taylor, Nate Burleson, Jordan Kent, Logan Payne, Bobby Engram

OT: Walter Jones, Sean Locklear, Porkchop Womack, Ray Willis

OG: Mike Wahle, Rob Sims, Mansfield Wrotto

C: Chris Spencer, Steve Vallos

Defense

DE: Patrick Kerney, Lawrence Jackson, Darryl Tapp, Baraka Atkins, Jason Babin

DT: Rocky Bernard, Brandon Mebane, Red Bryant, Craig Terrill, Howard Green

LB: Lofa Tatupu, Julian Peterson, Leroy Hill, Lance Laury, DD Lewis

CB: Marcus Trufant, Kelly Jennings, Josh Wilson, Kevin Hobbs

S: Deon Grant, Brian Russell, Jordan Babineaux, C.J. Wallace, Jamar Adams

Special Teams

K: Olindo Mare

P: Ryan Plackemeier

LS: Jeff Robinson

Miscellaneous

PUP: Deion Branch

IR: Ben Obomanu (broken clavicle)

Trade: David Kirtman

Practice Squad

Kyle Williams

Kevin Brown

Brandon Coutu

Michael Bumpus

Kelin Johnson

David Hawthorne

Patrick Murray

Joe Newton

Samuel Gutekunst

If you're curious how Forsett sticks, I would guess his extreme self-discipline in the face of touchback after touchback impressed Mike Holmgren.

Mike Holmgren said in the post game interview that Obomanu suffered a broken clavicle.

I'm surprised

That you took both CJ Wallace and Jamar Adams instead of Hawthorne. I don’t know that they’d only keep five linebackers, especially with Tatupu beat up a little.

by PascoJoe on Aug 29, 2008 10:34 PM PDT   0 recs

Could it be that

you think the cobination of CJ Wallace, Jamar Adams and Jason Babin is better on special teams than Hawthorne?

by PascoJoe on Aug 29, 2008 10:35 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I think Hawthorne is pretty safe on the practice squad.

But Adams is not. As impressive as Hawthorne has been, his type only fits a handful of defenses in the NFL. Adams could play anywhere. Also, Tatupu isn’t banged up in any meaningful way. Bone bruises hurt like hell, but it’s not going to affect his play come Sunday.

And yes, Wallace and Adams are probably more valuable to the special teams too.

This is pretty close, except...

…there’s no way they carry only 5 linebackers. An LB goes down and that leaves them with only ONE backup? Regardless of whether Hawthorne would be safe on the PS, this is a need-depth position.

Hawthorne makes the 53. Jamar Adams, welcome to the practice squad.

Wouldn't another option be to...

… trade Babin to clear space for Hawthorne. I don’t know that Babin is as good as he’s looked in the past few preseason games. Also, if you get short at DE at some point, which could be a stretch with Lawrence Jackson, Atkins, Kerney, and Tapp around, you could always drop Peterson down there short-term if you had to.

Any chance of dealing Babin for a pick?

by PascoJoe on Aug 30, 2008 12:03 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I wanted the team to trade Babin.

But I’m not sure they could get something in return as valuable as a cheap, moderately talented defensive end in his prime.

by John Morgan on Aug 30, 2008 12:13 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Obo on the IR isn't such a bad thing (if it happens)

It keeps him on the roster and he would have a chance to compete for a spot again next season.

by MFAN on Aug 29, 2008 10:47 PM PDT   0 recs

If we do lose him for the season

how seriously do we have to look at Seneca as a WR?

by BrianL on Aug 29, 2008 10:48 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I think we should give it a look

Frye played well enough to give me a little faith in him.

by MFAN on Aug 29, 2008 10:50 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I don't think very seriously at all.

Courtney Taylor looked very good. The team is clearly going to pass to its backs and tight ends. Nate Burleson should show some kind of growth. Kent looks almost there. That’s plenty of targets and I think the run game will be bangin’.

by John Morgan on Aug 29, 2008 10:50 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

It's remarkable what just a few tweaks to the offense this offseason has done.

Signing Wahle, shifting Sims over to RG. Getting a few backs who can actually generate positive yardage on the ground and are capable of catching passes.

Simple moves that could potentially pay off huge in terms of raw production.

by BrianL on Aug 29, 2008 10:52 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I was thinking the same thing.

Especially with all the injuries to receivers, the ’08 offense may be closer to a traditional West Coast Offense. Screens, more TE production, quick-hitter downhill running. All of which should give the young receivers more space.

Could be pretty freaking exciting.

by lemonverbena on Aug 30, 2008 9:40 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

interesting

I keep forgetting that we have running backs that excel at catching the ball.

by MFAN on Aug 29, 2008 10:53 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Makes me wonder...

If the front office won’t be looking at cuts at WR from similar rosters (e.g., Philly)? Cuz’ yeah, Payne in the slot does little for me. The slot in this offense doesn’t require a “special” athlete but I’m not sure Payne meets the minimum requirement.

Who gets cut that you think shouldn’t?

by Misfit74 on Aug 29, 2008 10:49 PM PDT   0 recs

I think Bumpus deserves a spot over Payne.

But I don’t think Seattle will have any trouble keeping both and Payne has “seniority”. I really want Pat Murray to make the PS, but his extended looks in the preseason speak well to him doing so.

I think it’s a fair roster with a lot of talent and depth.

by John Morgan on Aug 29, 2008 10:53 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I'd honestly rather see Dallas Sartz make the PS over Coutu

I don’t think Coutu is bad, he just seems awfully generic and I don’t see how the kick-off distance is going to improve.

Sartz could probably be a decent special teams player and plays a position where we don’t have a ton of depth.

by MFAN on Aug 29, 2008 10:58 PM PDT   0 recs

Coutu has value if Mare proves to be just miserable kicking field goals.

Now, I know that even if Mare sucks for a couple games it’s not enough to make an informed decision on his performance, but Mike Holmgren is going to want a change and better Coutu than some generic retread. Or so the thinking goes.

remember

people said that about a certain rams kicker and his kickoffs……

by Woodinville_12thMan on Aug 29, 2008 11:04 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

God I hope not.

Coutu’s kickoffs yesterday (as they have been all season) were dreadful.

Coutu kickoffs

I live down in Orange County so I rarely get to see any Seahawks except for the highlights on NFL.com. But anyways, I was just wondering on average how deep does Coutu kickoff since that seems to be the biggest concern for him. On one of the highlights the Raiders returners started from their goal line. Isn’t that what you want? If you couldn’t tell already I am personally rooting for Coutu, but then again I hardly get to watch any Seahawks games.

I hate you football gods

But when Branch and Engram DO come back, we are cool right?

Give me the home, where Buffalo roams, and watch Jones get a hundred yard game.

by SSreporters on Aug 30, 2008 9:16 AM PDT   0 recs

What about that punter...

Hodges, I think, who stepped in for Plack during camp. Seemed to be doing well, wouldn’t he make sense for the PS…

by michaelfox99 on Aug 30, 2008 9:32 AM PDT   0 recs

I think Hawthorne stays

Especially based on the way Holmgren keeps bringing him up, as he did after the game last night.

Ol’ Pat Murray had a tough night.

Overall, I was impressed with both Atkins and Babin last night. I was about ready to write Atkins off, but he flashed ability again. I hope that dude can put it together this year, if he gets a chance to play.

Adams didn’t play much—maybe a sign they are going to try to sneak him on the PS?

by Hawkdawg on Aug 30, 2008 9:33 AM PDT   0 recs

Farnsworth

has Payne AND Bumpus making the squad, no PUP for Branch, with Forsett going to the PS.

he knows better, i guess, but that would blow my mind.

Walter Jones, you were the greatest, most dominant player I've ever seen at any position. It's been an honor to be your fan.
