Seahawks Sign Samie Parker
The loss of Seahawks guard Rob Sims to season-ending pectoral surgery clears a roster spot for free-agent receiver Samie Parker, who has signed with the team.
Wait, who?
Didn't he get cut by the Panthers?
Ugh.
It's not over, but the BYE can't come fast enough for me - Maybe once Branch and Engram are back, we'll convince ourselves this was a bad dream...
Update by John Morgan: Parker is a burner who probably doesn't fit this offense and really doens't fit Matt Hasselbeck's skill set. One more thing to watch for on Sunday, but right now I can't see this as anything but a grotesque, in-season tryout.

Here's his career stats
47 games – 110 catches – 1500 yards – 7 TDs
In 4 years…
He’s a castoff from KC, through Carolina.
Was he really the best WR available? Better than Bumpus?
He can return kicks
You may gain some yards on the ground, but eventually Lofa will end up biting you in the ass.

My thought exactly.
Why give Bumpus the long look and sign him to the PS if Samie Parker is that much of an upgrade?
Oh well. Ruskell and Co. are paid to evaluate talent and we’re not, so.

Isn't special teams more of his forte...with Burleson returning punts
And Kent returning kickoffs…and now both are gone, I think he’s more likely to have an impact (if any) in these areas. crosses fingers
And they replace a duck with a duck.
I fucking hate you Mariners
Hopefully we'll use McMullen, Taylor, Seneca, and Payne.
And leave Parker in the return game mostly…and then he can be our “injury depth” until Engram and Branch return.
Can Parker tackle?
He would be a useful gunner now that Payne is expected to play more on offense.
You may gain some yards on the ground, but eventually Lofa will end up biting you in the ass.
everything isn't fine, but it's not a trainwreck
more of a bad bike accident. Broken arm, really bad scrapes on your knees. It hurts, but you’ll survive.
The "survive" is what's depressing about the sequence of events this year.
Was really looking forward to “thrive”. Maybe the new receivers will catch fire, and the team begins to play with some us-against-the-word attitude.
First step: beat the living shit out of the 9ers.
And stop getting hurt.

John wrote an entry about this.
Stop with the pointless, needless negativity.
Can we flip Russell for Brent..ah, nevermind.

I actually got a smile out of lemon this time
It seemed it was more of a jest than a real “OMG TRAINWREKS FTL KTHX.”
I was the poor bastard that had Tom Brady on my Field Gulls fantasy football team.
Thanks.
Funny how so many people here freak out over anything remotely “negative”.

It's been excessive lately.
Therefore the tolerance is at a rather low level.
It was excessive when it was just a bad loss
now we’ve lost two starters for the year on an already thin offense, cut a couple players most people here liked, and replaced our punter. Train wreck is becoming more and more appropriate. There’s no reason to give up on the season, but the Hawks are in a bad place right now.
Do you contribute anything other than “Stop it”?
All that's happened between losing Burleson and now is having lost an RG
the easiest position on the line to fill. Whoever we put in there is still somewhat of an improvement over Gray last season.
So no, it’s not a trainwreck. Things could be much, much worse, but they aren’t.
So stop it. The needless negativity is annoying.
RG will be fine.
But if Locklear isn’t ready the pass blocking won’t look much better and if SF plays defense with the correct amount of pressure and execution should make our offense look just as bad.
I don’t expect that to happen, because it’s the 49ers, but that can still happen.
Just as bad as playing a half of football with a right guard, facing Marcus Stroud, with a torn pectoral muscle?
Can we not fight over how bad the past few days have been and just agree they’ve sucked.
this reminds me of 2006 with the corners
and that did turn out pretty well, not that I wanted it to happen again.
Has Parker ever returned a kick before?
I’ve been searching for stats and have found nada. It seems that if we needed a returner, we would go sign someone who has returned kicks before.
I should be on my fifth weenie smoothie by now! You know how many I've had? Zero...

As far as I can tell ... no
Not even any preseason stats.
The McMullen move didn’t set my pants on fire, but at least I could understand the rational – knowledge of the system, good hands, a frame that will allow him to establish position on some of those routes Kent was getting was getting manhandled on.
But the Parker move just confuses me You can’t justify it as filling the “proven” PR/KR role, he has no WCO experience, and he’s a smurf who’s only skill will be wasted in this system.
Well Solari was his OC last year

Former Duck
Watched him a lot at Oregon and can say with some that certainty he’s a pretty slim guy, you wouldn’t want him as a gunner on special teams. His hands are pretty inconsistent which is quite maddening when you’re as fast as he is. I don’t remember him being quick in space, just inline fast, and he did little if any returning in college. As John said, not a great fit for this offense or for Hasselbeck.
Calm down.
We still have most of our offensive line, Matt, enough RB’s to be effective, two really good FB’s, a rookie TE who will come on soon, and a defense that more than held up its own on Sunday. If I had to pick which offensive lineman to lose in week one, I’d pick Spencer, then Sims or Willis. We’ll be ok.
McMullen played under Andy Reid in Philadelphia for a few years and knows that system which is similar to Holmgren’s and then went through training camp this year under Jim Zorn. He can be a decent underneath guy for a few weeks until we get Engram back. He won’t have the same confidence with Matt that Engram has, but should catch what’s thrown to him.
I think the Seahawks will win the next two games against SF and AZ mostly on the strength of their defense. This is not worse than when we had to go with Seneca for a few games.
But yes, it does feel like things are piling on.
Gotta wonder
if the Walrus called up Zorn and Reid and asked their opinion on who’s out there.
I was the poor bastard that had Tom Brady on my Field Gulls fantasy football team.
Parker instead of Robinson?
Koren seemed like the better call and I think that Holmgren would’ve gone there but Ruskell nixed the idea. In his press conference, Holmgren said that his “comfortability would be OK” with signing Robinson and he also said that he was indeed discussed at the personnel meeting.
Anyway, McMullen seems like a good fit and hopefully he can stabilize the receivers, provide Matt with a go-to guy, and take some of the pressure off Courtney Taylor. Good point on Mike giving Andy and Jim a call.. They must have spoke well of McMullen – that’s a good sign..
proof that Holmgren would still be drafting low-character guys
like Stevens or K-Robinson if he had the chance.
I can’t believe he thought about giving Koren Robinson another go around. Maybe he’s a nice guy now. But he blew it here. There’s a reason he’s available.
PARKER BABY!
Never really knew about this guy. I checked FO for all of his seasons at KC and the guy has been a DVOA monster!!!
Go see for yourself!
Again, obviously I don’t have all the facts underlying the stats but he had awesome dvoa for all his seasons!
He just needs some hands

DVOA doesn't know how to evaluate all the snaps Parker wasn't targeted.
Consider 2006, Parker started 15 games, but was only targeted 68 times. That’s a total befitting a slot receiver. DVOA doesn’t know how to knock a player for disappearing. It’s the Marcus Pollard rule. A player can rack up a great DVOA, but not be good. But when said player must be good, they’ll be exposed.
Well..
He only had 41 catches that year, true. Eddie Kennison was coming off two straight 1000+ yard seasons and was obviously the go to guy. Gonzalez was Gonzalez. 2006 was also the year KC decided they really wanted to run LJ into the ground (and he had 41 catches too). So I think Parker pretty much fits in where he should as the #3 or #4 option in that pass offense. That wasn’t that great of a pass offense anyways.
I mean I think you are right that we have to be weary of the Marcus Pollard rule. Although are you really sure Pollard was that bad? I mean he caught 80% of balls thrown his way (my god!). Could he really not get open or did Holmgren refuse to acknowledge what he had in Pollard? I don’t really know, it seemed like we took him out to run 3WR sets very often. Most people are very down on the Pollard deal because he sucked @GB. That was only one game though.
Although the DVOA may not mean he is ‘good’ it does indicate that when the ball is in the air and going to him he has a very high probability of making a play on it. Is his inability to stick to routes or get open a glaring flaw? We don’t really know. The DVOA does indicate a positive though. In the case of Koren Robinson for example, DVOA clearly shows that he blows. Year after year the numbers indicate he can’t catch and when he does he can’t do anything with it. His athleticism might help him get open but that fools you into throwing into him (ie throwing it into the turf).
I don’t think that NFL general managers cutting the guy is all that meaningful. It’s not like he couldn’t produce playing for the Colts or something. Remember, this is the offense which got 1147 yards out of Bobby Engram last year.
I am glad we didn’t grab 57 year old receivers like Glenn to fill the gap. McMullen and Parker are both young enough to have a serious shot at turning things around and finding a real place here in Seattle. They are also both experienced enough to not totally panic out there like Taylor, Payne, and Kent did last week.
This week the 49ers. We have a legitimate chance of shutting out the Niners. 7-10 points may be all this offense needs to win this game.

"this is the offense which got 1147 yards out of Bobby Engram last year"
What the hell does that mean? Engram runs great routes and catches the ball when you throw it to him. It’s no coincidence that the best year this team and offense had was when Engram and Jurevicius were 1-2 for most of the season.
as John showed...
…Holmgren has garnered pretty huge numbers using mediocre slot recievers through his whole career. Don’t get me wrong, I love Bobby, but he’s got serious limitations when you take him out of the slot.
But I’d say that Parker and McMullen are here largely because they would sign for cheap and don’t need to start, unlike Glenn who maybe wanting more money and a starting spot. I’d be surprised if, when Bobby and Branch come back, we keep all these receivers.
I have a different definition for mediocre I guess
I just remember Tom Waddle for the Chicago Bears in the late ’80’s. Some reporter asked Ditka why he liked him so much. Said Ditka, “He gets open and catches the football.”
Forsett Gone
I posted in Fanposts . forsett to Colts.
well, so much for that.
I was getting tired of the Forsett arguments anyhow.
NO it isn't a train wreck
YET,
the FO is patching things for the here and now and who cares about the future. All bets are off as long as Holmy gets his last shot at the brass ring.
Its a real shame
that we dont have an unused QB that would make an excellent WR. A damn shame, I tell ya.

They've gotta do SOMETHING...
The possession receiver Mike Hass makes more sense to me than the vertical guy Sammie Parker — but the Hawks need to add THREE wideouts and at least they’ve added two.
“Grotesque in-season tryout” or not, this is an EMERGENCY.
"TominHawaii's real name is Hubert and he's a rancher in Burns."
Mike Hass isn't good

Hello to all
I’m a member of Arrowhead Pride, and a long time Chiefs fan, so I thought I’d stop by to let you all know what you get in Samie Parker.
He is a fast-ish guy who will more often than not drop the easy passes; however, he’ll make some of the tougher ones (and then celebrate like he just caught the game-winning TD in the Super Bowl). As far as I can remember, he’s never returned a kick in a game, although I believe he was listed as a backup returner with KC a few times. It should tell you something that, when a returner was needed, preference was given to Eddie Kennison over Samie Parker.
It hurts man
At least i had farve, i guess. He’d better be amazing again.
