Seneca Wallace Gets Full Reps at Receiver Today
From--ahem--Seahawks Insider (posted by Eric Williams):
He looked crisp running routes and caught the ball with confidence. But mostly Seneca Wallace looked like he belonged in his first full practice at wide receiver.
Because of Seattle's injuries to its top four wide outs, back-up quarterback Seneca Wallace worked out with the receivers and it appears he will see considerable time at the position, and perhaps start on Sunday.
Not the circumstances under which many of us wanted to see Seneca get involved, obviously. Farnsworth reports that Billy McMullen and Samie Parker were already practicing as well.
So, I guess we see Taylor and Wallace as starting WR this week?
Wow.

he won't start
i don’t believe them. until they quit making fucking ridiculous guesses such as todays “let’s convert josh wilson to receiver” post, then i refuse to take much of what the “insider” says for worth until multiple sources think the same.

In the Insider's defense... *shudder*
…the “Wilson to WR” thing was a column by TNT knucklehead John McGrath. I agree that we don’t know who will start, but really, why not Wallace? Would you start Courtney Taylor and Logan Payne over him? Or the two guys that haven’t unpacked their bags yet?

agree with some of that
but personally i like mcmullen. try out seneca but in no way should he start. yes, i’d rather have trained receivers who play that position and have made a living out of it start and get reps at said position than a quarterback. how radical of me, i know.

I'm just curious
Why so many people are so confident with Wallace as a WR. I’m sure I will get flamed for this, but I think his catch against Carolina back in 05 has created some type of following of people who think he’s the next coming of Largent. I see Wallace at WR as either a trick pony, or desperation because there’s simply no one else to put out there.

You won't get flamed.
There is essentially nothing to indicate Wallace would make a good wide receiver.

Except for speed. Which is one of the worst ways to
evaluate talent in who should be a receiver. It’s like wins with pitchers.

Essentially nothing, except:
- His obvious physical skills and talent
- Assertions since his rookie year, by teammates and coaches, that he is “the best athlete on the field”
- Coaching staff’s oft-repeated desires to find a reliable 3rd QB, in order that Wallace could contribute as a WR/PR
- Thorough knowledge of the Seahawks offense as a 6th-year pro
- Frequent (for a backup QB) practice reps as a WR
- Game action at WR in the regular season and playoffs, including the NFC Championship, Super Bowl XL and last year’s Divisional playoff game at Green Bay
- Joe Buck: “Seneca Wallace is in the game, lined up as a receiver… they throw it to Wallace! SENECA WALLACE!!”
- Started at WR and caught a pass on the first play from scrimmage in the NFC Wild Card Game versus Dallas
- 22 regular season rushing attempts for 134 yds, a 6.1/avg
- 2 regular season receptions for 47 yds, a 23.5/avg
- 2 postseason receptions for 34 yds, a 17.0/avg
- 912 yds and 15 TDs rushing in two collegiate seasons
Next coming of Largent? No. Essentially nothing to indicate? No.

Thats the long way of saying
4 catches for 81 yards in 6 years.
The rest is sensationalism and coach speak (if he was really that great why wasn’t there a more concerted effort to get him on the field?). To think that Wallace will step in and be productive in this situation, considering the WR around him and his experience, is a leap of faith.
by Nate Dogg on Sep 10, 2008 10:27 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'm not saying that we KNOW he is going to step in and be productive
But there is clear evidence that he MAY do so.
Why wasn’t there a more concerted effort to get him on the field? Because they like him even more as a QB, they depend on him to fill the important role of backup QB, and none of the other QBs brought in since he became the backup have given the coaches confidence that they could adequately fill that role.

From a QB those aren't bad stats
There has been efforts, hence Charlie Frye. He knows the offense better than anyone on the team and has proven himself as an atheletic ball handler, he can catch and generate yards after catch. He is our best option. Just very important to keep him healthy with Hasselbacks recent issues. The new pickups will not be ready on sunday, it took 6 weeks for us to play the former SB MVP Branch in our rotation, if you think these new guys are going to come on and be ready in 3 days your out of your mind.

Yeah
That’s pretty much my thoughts on it. Yeah, he’s a great athlete, but that doesn’t mean he’s a great WR. Not only that, but what if he gets hurt?

"What if he gets hurt"
Pretty much applies to everyone wearing a Seahawks uniform right now.

Too conservative
Playcalling and use of Wallace; the dude is 28 now, spent 5 seasons waiting around and only now – in Holgren’s blaze of glory – does he decide to break the glass.

Joe Buck doesn't help your argument :)
You may gain some yards on the ground, but eventually Lofa will end up biting you in the ass.

No good reason.
The catch against Carolina wasn’t a screen in space and then Wallace created the rest…it was a well-run route against former Seahawk Ken Lucas(who is a seriously good CB). If I remember right it was a short post corner, covered well and Wallace ran the route well and made a good catch on a kind of difficult play. Hopefully memory isn’t too far off.
I’ve gone over the same logic in my mind…but something just makes me confident about his being a good WR. But I and everyone else could be proven very very wrong on sunday when we get to see more than 1 or 2 snaps from him.

The Real Issues
I feel like with all the news we have had this week, very little being good. everyone has lost complete site of what really happened in the game. Our special teams gave up mad points and probably lost the game for us, and we release Plack like that was the only issue.
On top of the hassleback had less than 2 seconds on nearly every play to find recievers he has never thrown to before.
Bottom line is that to win on Sunday we need to not give up 60 yard punt returns and give hassleback some damn time to find the recievers. Everybody is blaming the recieving core for dropping rushed passes from a qb who didn’t play in preseason. Get Matt some time.
And with all the word on the other injuries nobody has mentioned how Matt has been feeling either after the game or in practice this week.
Doesn’t matter who we pick up if our qb can get 2 seconds to find a reciever.

True.
That also touches on the downside of Wallace at WR. It’s been a black hole of injuries. They’re a worsened Hass bulging disc and a Wallace-at-receiver injury from Frye Time.

Better than starting 0-3
And I must say….Frye did look a lot better in San Diego at the end of Preseason then he did in the first full game against Oaktown.

You know there is one thing that hasn't been mentioned about Wallace as a WR
HE KNOWS HIS ROUTES. That’s seemed to be something that our young’ns struggled with. He’s a goddamned QB, of course he understands the routes on every play, he’s trained to pass to them. We can use him anywhere and he’ll at least make a play develop correctly, as it’s been drawn up. I see his presence being more of a boon than his hands.

Wallace at WR
I have a very good feeling about Seneca playing wide-out. We’ve all seen what he can do, albeit only in quick flashes. He’s fast, he can catch, he’s tall, and he runs good routes – he could be the answer to our problems.. The only reason he hasn’t played receiver much yet is because he is a damn valuable backup QB. But we need him on the field now, no matter what. We can’t sacrifice the season because of fear of injuries. If Hass goes down, God forbid, then we’ll deal with that, either by moving Wallace back to QB or going with Frye, who is serviceable and will get better with experience. I have faith in Holmgren and Hasselbeck — Go HAWKS!!

...Seneca is really short. Like 5'11"...that's 1 inch taller than me.
Anyway, it can’t hurt to give Seneca some reps at WR.

I can't help but think Seneca will be more or less a decoy
Maybe run an end-around or something like that. I just don’t see him used as more than a bit player as a receiver.
by Man From Nantucket on Sep 11, 2008 1:36 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I disagree.
I think he’ll get a regular WR run, this week at least. Matt will keep coming to him once he establishes that he can get open and make catches.
