Which pass coverage scheme are the Seahawks best staffed for?
It is time for a serious discu ssion.
We all saw the horrifying effects of a strong wide receiver corps combined with the deep ball vs. the 49ers. Play after play, despite heavy pressure, the Seahawks were unable to stop the aerial bombardment. Are running the wrong coverage schemes for our players?
The Seahawks have great LBs & DEs who might be used more creatively in short zones, spies, and other deceptive modes. Are they being put to their best use?
Our DBs are somewhat short, but quick. When we confront 6-4 WRs & TEs with 5-11 CBs, it often produces poor results. Is this rational?
What do you believe is our best coverage scheme out of our 4-3 base defense given who we have on our roster?
Below is the current defensive roster sorted by echelon and height:
| No. | Name | Pos. | H | W | Age | Exp. |
| 92 | Brandon Mebane | DT | 6-1 | 314 | 23 | 2 |

So why Cover 2?
I would choose Cover 2, but with drastic changes to the safeties. Russell gone. Grant is now your FS. With that you can put Jamar Adams as your SS and bring him along slowly in practices. The guy is smart, big, made 34 starts at Michigan at FS, but I think he can play SS in a system such as our Cover 2. The problem with that is well John Marshall and Brian Russell.

I gotta agree
With our current situation at safety we can’t afford to ever run a cover 1 with Russell being the deep man. He just doesn’t have the speed to cover sideline to sideline. With Cover 2 we can at least somewhat hide him on the field.
I like Johns idea a while back of using Wilson as a safety because although he is small he is a tough tackler. But just like Bob Sanders would probably get hurt quite often from having to deliver so many hits.
You may gain some yards on the ground, but eventually Lofa will end up biting you in the ass.

How can he play safety?
When he will be our slot receiver next week?

On Axing Russell
I agree on bringing in a taller player (and our PS talent) into the mix. I have a hard time with abandoning Russell altogether. He has been strong in the past. It seems like last year he and Grant had excellent chemistry and success, but then the defense coaches made all kinds of statements in the off & pre-season about improving our coverage from last year.
Perhaps he is a victim of their system?
Why would the coaches choose to fix something that wasn’t broken anyhow? We allowed among the fewest passing TDs in the league.

But Russell was bad last year
His tackling angles were poor. His Coverage was so so and he gives up way to much yardage on completions that are in front of him. Russell is asked to play deep. That he does fine except now he doesn’t have the speed to come up and make a play (speed that was disappearing last year). A perfect example was JT O’Sullivan scramble yesterday where he should of been called for a late hit. I don’t know what Russell was waiting for because JT committed to the run pretty early and had 9 yards to go.

Roving LB
What about the expanded use of the LBs & DEs in short-zone coverage? Bigger defenders can produce more forced fumbles and injuries.
The excessive use of man-to-man in the 5-15 yard range denied us many INTs and the receivers still got open on short routes and crossing patterns.

We do occasionally drop Kearney and Jackson into coverage.
Which I like. But most of the big completions came on the typical John Marshall 3rd down blitz. Our front 4 is good enough to get pressure consistently. We need to stop calling those blitzes and drop lofa into coverage.

Wasn't man also
It was Cover 1. With Russell as the safety.

QB runs
There certainly were at least two flushed pocket-QB scrambles which I was expecting someone from the secondary to come flying in from the side of the TV and smash O’Sullivan.
Both times I was sorely disappointed.
And he was wildly late on the play you describe. Thank god the refs didn’t flag him then.

Ya I don't know how that wasn't a late hit.
I just want to know what he was looking at. It wasn’t like JT pump faked him. He tucked that ball and started running.

Exactly.

Thanks
I am hoping this post & discussion will spur on more of the same. I only discovered Field Gulls a month ago and was pumped to discover a site that offered detailed & deep analysis of plays, formations, match-ups & more which is so hard to find in the sports media. Glad to be of service!
