A quick realization
There's been an awful lot of Brian Russell bashing going on lately, on some larger sites, too. And most of it's deserved. You know why? Because Brian Russell is football's answer to Darin Erstad. He's white, gritty, doesn't really do much very well, and he used to be a QB/punter way back in the day, and can claim that as a reserve skill.
Brian Russell is a jack of all trades, just as able to throw a tight spiral into an empty area on the field as he is to defend an empty area on the field.
Bleah.
A place to bury strangers.

Another way to put it: Brain Russell is the Chis Gray of the defensive backs.
Great in the meeting and locker rooms, physically inadequate on the field.
Also: Overvalued by coaches.

Though Chris Gray used to be good
He just got older, he was an entirely competent lineman for a long time. Russell and Erstad were never very good (excepting the one year that Erstad went bananas, one of the great mysteries of modern sports).

Yeah
Gray was actually good pre-2006.
I’m not sure Russell has ever been good.

Are we certain Russell can defend an empty area?

2/3 of the world is covered with water
The rest is covered by Brian Russel
2/3 of the world is covered by water. The rest is covered by Marcus Trufant.

Disagree
Erstad, for all his faults, managed to show up in some pretty critical moments. I have no idea how he did it, and I don’t believe in someone being “clutch”, but he’s had results in the post season.
Something tells me that if we make it to the Super Bowl, Russell won’t be in the running for the game’s MVP award.
