So why did we let D.J. Hackett walk?

Sure would be nice to have him, especially now that Branch, Engram, and Burleson are all banged up.  With the exception of New England, (now that Brady is out for the year,) why the heck do we seem to be cursed with the injury bug so much?

For the bright spots Ruskell seems to have, I'm sick of the arrogance...Arrogance to think not franchising Hutch was the right thing to do...arrogance to let every other area of the team be set, but then just flat out neglect our receiving core at the start of the year, thinking Courtney Taylor will lead us to the promise land.

Wanna hear a good joke?

If Mo Morris' injury is serious, we should offer to resign Shaun Alexander back onto the roster. LOL

what we need is another injured WR

yes, he’s healthy. now. at this moment. basically, Courtney Taylor would be seeing action this season with or without Hackett.

But

He hasn’t been for months, and it won’t be long before he’s hurt again.

btw, not franchising Hutchinson was Mike Reinfeldt's idea

The former salary-cap assistant who left to be the Titan’s GM. at least according to articles/scuttlebutt when Reinfeldt left

Hackett, lol

I was into giving Hackett a one year deal, one last shot to see if he could stay healthy and be the player we all knew he COULD be. There was no way you commit multiple-years to him given his injury history though. Other teams (Carolina) were just willing to overspend for him and that was that.

He has been hurt the whole time he’s been with Carolina already. He did play Sunday but only caught for 48 yards and that wass without Steve Smith.

Next year we should draft Maclin…

Hackett had a big fumble that led to the go ahead Chargers TD

He is dealing with a toe injury, only gained 48 yards, etc.

No, I’m kinda glad he’s gone.

Obviously my signature will tell you the opposite of what will actually happen. So 49ers 43 Seahawks 9.

I am starting to think that bringing up Hutch

should result in going to the box. He’s gone. A long time ago. Let it go.

Hackett was signed for a 2 year, 3.5 million contract. Thats a nice deal, but obviously we didn’t think he was worth it. No one foresaw Engram’s shoulder or Obomanu (essentially a Hackett clone) having a broken collar bone.

Think of it in the way of the Depth Chart
1. Branch
2. Engram
3. Burleson
4a. Hackett
4b. Obomanu
5. Taylor

How often do we go four wide? How many snaps would an oft injured Hackett have gotten? It was a calculated risk that should be reviewed next off-season, not after week one.

agreed

that would’ve been overkill, Kent and Taylor have enough showing that I’d be comfortable making that descision, now and in the long term.

I was the poor bastard that had Tom Brady on my Field Gulls fantasy football team.

Not true...

Seattle knew thier first 3-6 games would be more like:

Engram
Burleson
Hackett
Obo
Taylor

Not signing Hackett put this team at risk, and the deal is really only for 1M this year. We seem to drop talent in order to save Ruskell picks. I’m all for that, when it makes the team better. Not signing Hackett puts your franchise quarterback in a quandry, limits your running game, and leaves you thin and at risk of paying at least 1M or more for a scrub to cover your ass.

It is what it is...

except he has never been healthy

You may gain some yards on the ground, but eventually Lofa will end up biting you in the ass.

Yes

that is true… but he played a decent game yesterday (aside from the fumble). I know we here in Charlotte are pleased to have him… He gets open :)

He gets open because

most other teams think he is limping off the field or on his way back for X-RAYS. Not used to seeing him on the field.

ackett wanted more $ than $1, remember, playing the market?

Ruskell offered a 1 year, like $1.65 or something like that, I can’ t find the original story.

I simply brought Hutch up to make a point

This front office has been 1 step forward and 1-step back since 2005. The way our receiver position has been approached this off-season has been a completely unneccesary gamble, just like putting the transition tag on Hutch was, and that isn’t hind-sight either. I commented about that several weeks ago, if not months ago. What is the point in having every other thing in place on this team, talking about how the window of opportunity is right now, and being so lax in the approach towards our receiver position?

My point, is that we knew there was a danger things would get sketchy. Branch is coming off a major knee injury, Nate Burleson can be like Pandora’s Box, and Bobby Engram can’t be a timeless wonder for too much longer. We groomed D.J. Hackett, and anyone that truly followed the Hawks last year can attest to how much more potent our offense was with him in the lineup. So why groom him in the system to just let him walk? It reminds me of Ken Lucas (although it would have been expensive to keep Ken) And now Burleson is gone for the year.

Hasslebeck and Jones aren’t getting any younger, our linebackers are in their prime, the defensive backfield is solid enough except a certain safety named Brian. Both the O-Line and D-Line are adequate enough. Our running backs should be sufficient, although I won’t be surprised if Julius Jones will have been a waste of free-agent cash.

I’m not throwing the season away after one game, and an unfortunate injury to Nate. However, it is going to take everybody playing awesome all of the time, for the Hawks to have any chance of doing much in the Playoffs. Now we have to do it with wounded veterans and untested practice squad players at the receiver position.

Can I buy you a fish sandwich?

BTW silkybrown

It is never okay to say something completely dumb and add a LOL to it. Go ahead and say the stupid comment, and leave it. We’ll see the sarcasm and you’ll get a smile. Add the LOL and you become a preteen text messenger. “I think I have a crush on u LOL”
 “OMG, U DO?”
 “Yah LOL”
 “<3”
 “<3 LOL”

That said you brought up a good topic for discussion, and that’s cool, keep on doing it.

double standard?

I love how people always bring up Hacks injuries or contract when someone asks about him.
Nevermind the fact that 3.5M over 2 years is a STEAL for a WR that has proven talent IN YOUR SYSTEM.

Moneywise- 3.5 million is nothing for a guy with his talent. 2 years is not a long term commitment.
Way to overlook the contracts of Branch and Nate (a kick returner thrust into a #1 role) though.

Injuries- Branch, Engram, Nate, Obu, all hurt.
Taylor has done nothing….. ever

Putting Hackett below Nate and even with Obu on a depth chart (presuming everyone is healthy) is also comical to me.

I'd like to kick Josh Brown in the privates!

by The Manchild on Sep 8, 2008 11:53 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

It is a steal. Don't get me wrong.

But how is it a double standard? Do you pay another 3.5 million for someone who can play the 8 games that Hackett misses?

All I am saying is that at the day the season ended last year we had Engram, Burleson, Obomanu, and Taylor (a young Engram) all healthy. Branch due back week 6. So 5 receivers. At the time of the off-season we did not need him.

And in regards to the depth chart? Depth chart is not always based on skill. It is on knowing the calls, familiarity with the position, and rhythm. Hackett was known to be out. It’s a fact. He is a good receiver when healthy, but couldn’t stay on the field. Hence why the Panthers signed him to such a low salary but offered the 2nd receiver spot. Why do you think they signed Muhammed when they have Rosario (who plays the slot a lot) and Dwayne Jarrett?

Amen

see above… Ruskell is a guy who hit big on Tatupu… and made the super bowl on Ted Thompson’s arse. I am not liking our “quick” defense, as it leaves us vulnerable without a place with noise decibals above 100.

It is what it is...

by kidder95 on Sep 8, 2008 12:40 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

wrong

It only leaves us vunerable when the offense is going 3 and out every other drive, if you cant sustain a drive on offense no defense will be good, and if you thought they were the problem yesterday you must have been watching a different game

Agreed

I was a bit one-sided in that, and to be fair, any argument against Ruskell is like putting dirt in your ice cream. Personally, I would like to see us pick up a marcus stroud type stud… but hey, I’m coming to the realization I don’t know jack, and that I need to let go and enjoy the process.

Much thanks!
