New Year's Day Bowls Open Thread

I know it's early, but whatever.

I'm sure the one game everyone here is focusing on will be the Capital One Bowl, featuring Matthew Stafford.  This is the first time I'll be getting a good look at Stafford, and I'm hoping he'll be a good second option in the draft should Seattle miss out on Sam Bradford (Knowshon Moreno should be fun to watch as well.)

As for the other games, I'm rooting for Clemson because fuck Nebraska.  The Rose Bowl should be an entertaining matchup (I'm rooting against USC, of course).  Cincy/Virginia Tech should also be a fun game (hopefully more fun than the Georgia Tech crapfest earlier tonight).

A place to bury strangers.

I intrepret this as "the games are going to be fun tomorrow, hope I don't puke all over my bathroom floor."

That’s my best guess, anyway. Anyone else care to decipher this?

For those up early enough to watch the Iowa/South Carolina game.....

I think it’s safe to say Stephen Garcia doesn’t have a future in the NFL. Move along, nothing to see here.

(Also, yay no hangover!)

I'm amazed the game is still tied 3-3. Georgia has been extremely slooppy with the ball today.

Hurm....not a great day for Stafford so far.

Looks like his mechanics are solid—good pocket presence, steps into his throws, rarely panics. Seems to trust his arm strength too much; lots of overthrown passes. I’ll have to see some better accuracy in the second half before I’m sold on him.

You must be on Dish Network.

Currently Fisher Communications (KOMO in Seattle) is in a dispute with them over carriage fees. Their contract expired on the 17th and they have yet to renew.

I kind of wouldn't mind drafting Maluaga.

I know we don’t really need a LB, but I can’t help but feel like he’ll have a Ray Lewis, Troy Polamalu impact on a defense.

by LantermanC on Jan 1, 2009 2:39 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Maulega would be a fine option if we let LeRoy Hill walk.

Mays is just not impress me much. When he’s not blitzing, he mostly just stands around 20 yards back.

He won't last past the top 20

Scouts will cream their pants when they see him at the combine. With some solid coaching, he may yet become a contributor (whether at S or LB) but I’d rather let some other team take the chance.

How about Mark Sanchez?

in the 2nd or 3rd…?
Or did he have some legal troubles before a la Colt Brennan?

by LantermanC on Jan 1, 2009 3:10 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Sanchez is looking pretty good against a great Penn State Defense.

Though I’m just watching the play by play on gamecast, so I really can’t assess anything even semi-accurately.

by LantermanC on Jan 1, 2009 3:12 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Don't know about the legal troubles, but Sanchez has been looking good today.

Could go somewhere between the 2nd and 4th, depending on how his combine goes.

Yep found it

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Sanchez

2006, rape allegations, had to take rape awareness class, but the charges were dropped due to lack of sufficient evidence. Sounds kind of fishy…

by LantermanC on Jan 1, 2009 3:16 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

One of his teammates lost a bet to him.

But didn’t pay him in a timely manner. So Sanchez attacked him in the shower and raped him. He then finished the deed by giving him a Dirty Sanchez…Oh wait, that was Nate Robinson. (minus the rape/Dirty Sanchez part)

Huh your right

I thought he was younger. But I think he stays one more year. He would be a surefire 1st round pick next year.

by Scruffy Lefty on Jan 1, 2009 3:45 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I've actually seen 1 mock draft that had him going first overall....

I immediately disregarded everything else that website had to say though, since even if he does something amazing like…. say…. throw for 276 yards and 3 tds in the first half against a good psu defense, he still only has a years worth of stats to back him up?

Scout.com has us taking Stafford at 4

which made me sad that I’d been reading their stuff for the past few months.

And holy jesus, Matt Ryan’s contract (in the 3 spot) is 6 years 72 million? That’s 12 million per year…. which means 50% of the time, you’re getting market price, and 50% of the time you’re overpaying a bust…?

So say for some reason that the Titans don't resign Haynesworth...

Haynesworth > Leroy Hill and the #4 pick (not that we’d get rid of it, but trade down to the no. 10 pick or higher would save us 30 million dollars?)

by LantermanC on Jan 1, 2009 3:59 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

or I guess if we trade down to the #13 or so pick

that’d be Haynesworth + Maluega >>>> Hill + Bradford/Oher?
