I'm personally hoping for at least 100 yards and 2 TDs today.
Enough of the Cardinals. This ends today.

On an unrelated note...
What sites are used to find the old combine numbers that are spit out on occasion? I’ve been trying to find old numbers and having very little luck.

NFLDRAFTSCOUT
one word, put in prospect name and nfldraftscout and you should find something.

They offer a premium service for $25 a year, but also offer free information

Well
I was just curious if John pays, cause I’ve used the site before and usually don’t get a whole lot of numbers.
by cashless on Jan 10, 2009 2:23 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I don't
You have to circumvent their protection by searching through Google.
I can find most of the numbers I need there. Other stuff just takes more searching.

McCoy
What are the chances we’d draft Gerald McCoy with 1.04? Do you think he can become Haynesworth – the draftee version? I don’t know if he plays the ‘other’ DT spot next to ’Bane or not. Is the the disruptor we need?

There’s a very good chance he doesn’t declare.

I'd put him at left guard, but give him line calling duties.
Of course, from there he could play anywhere we needed. Hopefully, the line is picked apart by vultures again.

Gotta look at Moore's 2007 season
last year he was AWESOME on a pretty mediocre defense. This season, lots of nagging injuries (bruised heel, bruised ribs) robbed him of some speed—the kind of stuff you can play through, but you’re just not healthy. He didn’t embarrass himself this season, but wasn’t a difference-maker.

With all the talk about running back being an overrated position and teams being able to find a good back anywhere
I hope people see Johnson and know that great running backs do exist and a talent like Johnson’s can transform an offense.
by John Morgan on Jan 10, 2009 2:15 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
Who else falls into that category?
Westbrook, Peterson, Brown?
by Nate Dogg on Jan 10, 2009 2:22 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Steven Jackson
not that he can overcome total suckiness from the rest of the offense. Portis when he was healthy and running in Zorn’s WC—not that that’ll ever happen again. I think a talented back could do that for Arizona…
I think the problem isn’t that backs are completely fungible, only that coaches fail to realize how short the window is for good backs. I would add one every 3-5 years and ship them out as soon as they slowed down.

John, I try to follow your thoughts, but where do you stand on Crabtree?
I realize everyone is optimistic during the offseason, but if we don’t trade down I really want Crabtree. Am I crazy? (I realize a lot of people want him and I’m not unique, I just wonder what you think)

by dlinsley on Jan 10, 2009 5:42 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I was just thinking that.
A really, really star caliber WR completely changes your offense. They’re just flinging the ball up to him, and there’s not much Carolina can do.
A guy like that would make Matt an all-star.

Warner to Fitz
reminds me of Brady to Moss last year. Like you said, throw it to him and the defense can’t do anything to stop it.
Just I think Brady→Moss was used more.
by GarethLewin on Jan 10, 2009 5:45 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Warner and Brady have deep passes Hasselbeck just doesn't have.
by John Morgan on Jan 10, 2009 5:46 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
He can still throw if he needs to
With Joe J (as someone else said) he did well. And take the penalty against Steve Smith right now. A big receiver forces stuff like that too.
by GarethLewin on Jan 10, 2009 5:52 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I'm just thinking that with a our new OC that prefers sets with less receivers
Crabtree + Carlson + Hass(not the receiver) healthy throwing less and getting hit less = a good passing game to complement our obviously new emphasis on running.
by GarethLewin on Jan 10, 2009 5:44 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I haven't seen enough to know a lot. Obviously, I've seen him be awesome, but I want see everything before I say much.
I really haven’t transitioned into prospect scouting, but I do think Seattle should pick someone safe at 4 and Crabtree seems pretty safe.

I think, to an extent, the reason running back committees work is that teams that run back committees run more
Advanced NFL Stats did this game theory look at play selection and it found a ~2 to 1 run to pass ratio was ideal. That’s one reason I’m thrilled with Knapp. He also goes for it a lot on 4th.

That's bad stastical analysis
Losing teams throw more and in more desperate situations. The interceptions don’t cause the teams to lose, the situation that forces teams to throw interceptions and the inherent flaw interceptions represent cause teams to lose.
by John Morgan on Jan 10, 2009 6:30 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I don't think they are saying that interceptions cause you to lose
they are saying that statistically teams that throw interceptions lose. It’s a correlation not causation.
And the relevance to this game was purely that the Cats are walking down the table nicely.
by GarethLewin on Jan 10, 2009 6:31 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Their thesis...
The official NFL gamebook says that the Ravens-Dolphins wildcard game ended Sunday at 3:56 p.m.
The Cold, Hard Football Facts say it ended at around 2:15 p.m., with 2 minutes, 30 seconds to play in the first half.
That’s when Miami quarterback Chad Pennington threw his second interception of the game – bad enough to throw picks in any playoff game, but this one made even worse by the fact that Baltimore’s Ed Reed returned it 64 yards for a touchdown.
is preposterous.

I kind of wonder if this is part Delhomme and part Carolina's system being so simple that it gets picked apart in the playoffs.

Hasn't Carolina had some good playoff success?
by MFAN on Jan 10, 2009 8:08 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Two good runs
Delhomme has 8 picks in their last two playoff games. Seattle completely solved their offense and it looks like Arizona has done likewise.
by John Morgan on Jan 10, 2009 8:12 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
so teams don't try and solve their offence during the regular season?
by djafrot on Jan 10, 2009 8:13 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Just curious, but who do you think designed the gameplan that Hawks had to beat Carolina in 2005
Was it John Marshall, Ray Rhodes or someone else? It just seemed like Seattle ran a lot of different defensive schemes that we haven’t seen them do the past two seasons.
by MFAN on Jan 10, 2009 8:16 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
The Panthers were exceptionally one dimensional in that game

I believe it was Bentley that was usually pressing Smith at the line. Don’t know why more teams don’t do that, I’ve never seen Steve Smith so frustrated (except at training camp when he’s punching his own players).

by GarethLewin on Jan 10, 2009 8:34 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
I think it's opposing coordinators bother to really game plan
as absurd as it sounds, it does seem defensive coaches work harder in the playoffs.
by John Morgan on Jan 10, 2009 8:35 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Well they have more time
I realize AZ had to play Atlanta first, but is in inconceivable that AZ had some lower ranked dude watching Carolina film for two weeks and giving them more info?
Also possibly during the regular season maybe teams try to do their own thing, but in the playoffs they try to adapt. If that is true it’s not smart, but it sounds plausible.
