If the Cards win

and then lose the Superbowl, then they won’t make the playoffs next year, which means we probably will.
If they win the Superbowl, their FAs will be overvalued, and people will sign them, which mean we’ll make the playoffs.

by Dukeshire on Jan 18, 2009 12:20 PM PST up reply actions

Sorry to derail humor for a serious response but

It’s obvious and logical than support for a team will ebb and flow based on success. Sports, and more specifically winning, is the product that these teams put out. If the product is bad, people won’t consume it.

In fact if teams didn’t suffer fan support if they did badly, they would lose every incentive to do well, and that would – quite frankly – suck.

by BrettJMiller on Jan 18, 2009 12:23 PM PST up reply actions

There is a difference between sticking through

and paying money to see a game.

I’m not defending the AZ fans by the way, just the ebb and flow of support.

by GarethLewin on Jan 18, 2009 12:24 PM PST up reply actions

If your point is that sports fans are fickle due to only caring when the team wins

I’ll agree, non Chicago Cubs fans are like that. I just don’t understand personally because I pay to see 100 loss Mariner teams and 12 loss Seahawks teams…I went to all 8 home games and like 65 of the M’s games this year, so I feel a little upset about fair weather fans in general. I don’t care if it’s an inevitability, it’s bullshit, you either like the team/sport, or you don’t. Don’t show up because they’re winning and it’s the cool thing to do, ya know?

Yesterday's Pants
A blog-thingy about the Mariners and stuff.

by BrettJMiller on Jan 18, 2009 12:27 PM PST up reply actions

That wasn't exactly my point

And to be clear, I want AZ to lose like someone that bought Enron, waiting for them to die, sold what he had left for pennies on the dollar and bought AIG

I didn’t really have a point.

I do ask you (I only went to one Hawks game this year, but I live in Vancouver and am still in line for season tickets so I have excuses) how long you would pay for a bad team? At what stage would you start supporting them from home?

by GarethLewin on Jan 18, 2009 12:34 PM PST up reply actions

I don't have a ton of expendable income.

I go to more games when teams are good than when they’re not because winning is more fun than losing. If I had more money it would be different, but I don’t (and at this point in history a lot of other people are in the same boat) so I go to fewer games. Keep in mind that Phoenix has been one of the areas hardest hit by the subprime clusterfuck.

Yes, I played (baseball at least). Yes, real players know about stats, such as Brian Bannister. Real players are aware of advanced stats, some care, some don’t. None of them go up there thinking “Man, I need to improve my wOBA right now”….jesus fuck dude.

That's not really the point though

Obviously Arizona shouldn’t give up because they had a lower DVOA than Philly, that would be silly. However it is important for coaches and front offices to look at the numbers to know how they’re team looks for the upcoming season.

Statistics are imortant. I am just discussing that what cannot be measured, attitude, “want-to”, presence, is what is growing in AZ.

Ken Wisenhunt is building in the mold of a Pittsburgh. It is showing. That was how this all started :)

There are no numbers for what we are watching.

I’m not saying Hasselbeck is gonna be a superstar QB again, but to think that his passer rating or DVOA is reflective of his actual ability is silly.

Scouting matters too, I never said it didn’t. Sometimes you need to look at the cause of the numbers. Using numbers effectively is a process based analysis, not results based…soo….yeah.

I actually don't have a problem with the point you're making.

I think the Cardinals underperformed during the regular season. While I don’t think they’re as good as they’ve looked in the playoffs, I think they are going to be a good team for a few years to come. The issue is that your argument doesn’t make your point at all, and when you attack the use of statistics you make yourself look bad.

by Aaron Campeau on Jan 18, 2009 1:58 PM PST up reply actions

yeah... poorly presented

I tend to get excited… I also deal with numbers all day at work, and cannot stand the use of them… our due diligence at the banking center I work at are used emotionally… thus making them moot… and making trending football an exhaustive concept.

Statistics are a good predictor of what you want to have happen. I’ll leave it there. It is what happens that determins the happening.

That said, the numbers this group runs for football are impressive… maybe someday I’ll be interested in them.

So why do you read this site? And I'm not trying to be a dick when I say that.

I’m genuinely curious. It is very clearly numbers oriented, and you’ve just said that you don’t care about them. That’s fine; sports are about entertainment and you should enjoy them in whatever way you choose. But there’s lots of evidence that these numbers are really useful, and if you’re on the record as saying that you’re no interested in them, you shouldn’t be attacking their use.

There are lots and lots of places with communities that aren’t interested in statistical analysis. I just don’t understand why you’d choose this particular blog and then go about attacking it’s entire philosophy. And I’m not saying you shouldn’t hang out here, I’m just confused.

No one said Arizona isn't dominating this game.

They are playing great football in the playoffs, you won’t see much disagreement on that, however 3 games is too small of a sample size to tell us anything about a team and that’s what makes the playoffs so fun.

A perfect example is the 2006 Seahawks who should of been destroyed by a superior Cowboys team.

Number can give us the most precise possible way to analyze a team.

But things happen. The Kansas City Royals swept the Yankees at Yankee stadium a few years back. Does anyone think the Royals were better than the Yankees? Obviously not. When Arizona was #21 in DVOA, and Philly was in the top 5, it’s ridiculous to say that Arizona is the better team. Are they winning today? Yes. Are the playing better than the Eagles today? Fuck yes they are, much better. Are they a better team? No, they’re not. Things happen.

What I don’t understand is why people are always so down on numbers when 8/10 times stats folks predict a player’s success correctly and old traditional methods are more 50-50…despite this, people still believe we’re wrong and don’t understand the sport. Why? Check any offseason, especially baseball and compare SABR predictions to regular, and guess who usually is closer? I’m not claiming we’re always right, we’re just usually CLOSER which is the whole point of analyzing a sport in the first place—to get as close as we can to predicting future success. Signs don’t point to Arizona being a dominant power for years to come. It’s reactionary to think that’s what’s going to happen.

by BrettJMiller on Jan 18, 2009 2:10 PM PST up reply actions

In any way I would look at it

Warner has the better career
The most SB rings
Better decision making
More godliness
Throws more accurately

(BTW all the above is subjectively measured, I haven’t looked up the numbers, I should)

by GarethLewin on Jan 18, 2009 2:12 PM PST up reply actions

I wouldn't take Warner over McNabb if I was building a team today.

McNabb has an 85.9 career passer rating and still has some value with his legs (3.8 YPA this year, 5.8 career) and is only what, 30 years old?

SB rings don’t matter.

Warner has a career 93.8 rating, better yes but much of his career was played in the dome in St. Louis with no wind or other factors. Warner’s peak>McNabb’s peak, but McNabb is the better QB today. I don’t buy Warner’s big 2008.

SB rings don’t matter

Tell that to Dan Marino…

by Fear on Jan 18, 2009 2:17 PM PST up reply actions

Why don't you buy 2008?

This year

Warner 67.1% 4583 Yds 30 TDs
McNabb 60.4% 3916 Yds 23 TDs

by GarethLewin on Jan 18, 2009 2:17 PM PST up reply actions

Football seasons are 16 games, a very small sample size, and weather never really factors in to Arizona's home games.

McNabb also has more value with his legs, and Warner hasn’t been a star for a few years before this year.

Yesterday's Pants

by BrettJMiller on Jan 18, 2009 2:19 PM PST up reply actions

Oh and for that matter

the SB Rings was me comparing their careers, not them today. Although I do think at the end of the day SB rings matter in the sense that the goal is to win the SB.

by GarethLewin on Jan 18, 2009 2:18 PM PST up reply actions

I'll take that

Not sorted
 Hass, Rivers, Peyton, Brees, Garcia.

BTW notice that I didn’t even need to use Brady’s name. I took that as a challenge because he didn’t play this year.

Oh, also I would take Kurt Warner over McNabb anyday.
I also Ben Roethlisberger is better than McNabb.

In fact he isn’t even in the top half of QBs left.

by GarethLewin on Jan 18, 2009 2:05 PM PST up reply actions

Of course you did put Hass in there which he most definitely did not deserve this year.

by GarethLewin on Jan 18, 2009 2:09 PM PST up reply actions

I like Hass but I'll take McNabb of the two.

Rivers yeah, Peyton yeah, Brees yeah, can’t agree on Garcia. Not even sure about Brady—aside from 2008 which was greatly Moss aided, their career numbers aren’t too different.

We've had this discussion before, but I'll repeat myself

All that proves is that the system is very good, and that Brady takes the very good system and makes it great(test ever?).

I would take Tom Brady of any QB in the league if I were starting a team, with the possible exception of Eli Manning.

I mean Peyton, was just funny to say Eli.

by GarethLewin on Jan 18, 2009 2:19 PM PST up reply actions

I'm with JM--Peyton is better than Brady.

Akers gave up, what, 5 points?

Missed field goal, missed PAT, and had to go for two because of the missed PAT (which failed).

The division wasn't good...

but that happens every year. For some reason the NFC West gets dogged even harder—and I don’t think I’m exaggerating on that. The Cards going to the big game at least makes the division less of a story.

Horrible for the division.

I hate this idea that you should root for your division when you lose. They’re your rivals for a reason and you’re supposed to bleed hate for them like you bleed love for your team. Nothing hurts me more than seeing the Angels play well, for instance.

I’m rooting for Pittsburgh over Arizona for sure. If we can’t beat them, Arizona doesn’t deserve the fucking honor.

I can't say that take is wrong

I just take the opposite tack. I like it when local rivalries take on national importance. That’s what this means for next year. Arizona will be favored to run away with the division. Hopefully we’ll be back and when we beat them it “means” a little more to national audience.

Once upon a time nobody cared about New England v Miami outside those two cities.

by abender20 on Jan 18, 2009 3:16 PM PST up reply actions

there's no such thing as an "intended route" in the WCO

you adjust on the fly. The ball was there, so was the receiver. If he’s not falling, it’s probably a catch.

by djafrot on Jan 18, 2009 3:18 PM PST up reply actions

What?

The WCO is completely timing based. You throw to a spot. Curtis went to his knees so he wouldn’t over run the throw

NEEDS MORE FREEDOM!

by Scruffy Lefty on Jan 18, 2009 3:20 PM PST up reply actions

sort of not true

the receiver will make judgements mid-route depending on the coverage.

i remember this very well from an article SI ran about 15 years ago when San Fran’s WCO was carving up the league. It had big pics of game action with multiple arrows showing how receivers/backs etc. would change routes on the fly as coverage differed.

Curtis could possibly have adjusted to two or three different routes based on what the CB was doing. CB plays inside, he goes to an out or hitch out… outside and he slants in.

by djafrot on Jan 18, 2009 3:25 PM PST up reply actions

But not all routes are option routes

Anyway unless we can get a decent replay we won’t be able to really tell if there was PI or not.

NEEDS MORE FREEDOM!

by Scruffy Lefty on Jan 18, 2009 3:27 PM PST up reply actions
