So far Graham Harrell and John Parker Wilson are terrible. Not a surprise.
Herman Johnson is fuckin' huge.
75 word spam:
The defensive standout for the North team has been Boston College DT B.J. Raji. The consistency he’s maintained this week by dominating two of the top centers in the country (Oregon’s Max Unger and Cal’s Alex Mack) has elevated Raji as a potential top-10 selection.
During 11-on-11 drills on Wednesday, Raji beat Virginia Tech center Ryan Shuman over the top and disrupted a handoff between Texas Tech QB Graham Harrell and Virginia RB Cedric Peerman. There were a lot of mishandled balls that hit the ground that morning, and Raji’s ability to penetrate caused problems on snaps.
“I had confidence coming into this week, and I knew that I would be facing the top centers in the nation, and I wanted to show what I could do," Raji said. "I felt like I’ve been getting better each day, and with this being the last day in full pads, I thought I had my best performance.”

In what round is James Davis projected to go?

Does anyone buy Rhett Bomar as an NFL QB?

This game isn't making a great case for an already maligned draft class
by Nate Dogg on Jan 24, 2009 5:35 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
let's defer our draft pick until next year
kidding.
by djafrot on Jan 24, 2009 5:41 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I just stated watching, but I woulnd't mind trading down to pick 15
and getting BJ Raji, IF he’s only slightly worse than the top two DTs from last year. Or Haloti Ngata-like.

Who's this Michael Hamlin Safety the chatboard is talking about.
I’m interested if nothing besides the fact that he would be a mixture of Michael Boulware and Ken Hamlin.
by LantermanC on Jan 24, 2009 6:08 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
A mixture of Hamlin and Boulware would bite on playaction even when there isn't any.
Interesting about the combo-name though. Any relation to the Hammer?

Chris Berman promotes Nutrisystem now?
No one likes him. And he doesn’t even look any skinnier.

So what do we think of Crabtree with Harrell vomiting all over himself in this game?
by Nate Dogg on Jan 24, 2009 6:49 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
I think Crabtree makes a ton of sense
but Ruskell has all but said he won’t draft a WR in the 1st.
by John Morgan on Jan 24, 2009 6:51 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
He also said he wouldn't draft a lineman in the first
by Nate Dogg on Jan 24, 2009 6:53 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
This draft is so devoid of top tier talent I think he'll be forced to take him
by Nate Dogg on Jan 24, 2009 6:58 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Matthew Stafford makes a lot of sense.
by John Morgan on Jan 24, 2009 7:01 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
You seemed to think that Ruskell would want to go a different direction with QB
Has that changed?
by Nate Dogg on Jan 24, 2009 7:05 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
A couple comments in the rams game quick cap
by Nate Dogg on Jan 24, 2009 7:08 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Well Cassel is out
And Ruskell’s opinion has probably changed WRT quarterbacks, because Seattle needs one and Seattle has the pick to get one.

Grr
stafford is shit

Hm.
That’s a good point. If we’re going to spend a billion dollars on someone, they better be good.
We may have a lot of WR’s right now, but they’re all hurt or unproven (or both).
Crabtree looks to be on a lot of draftnik’s boards as the best pick in terms of talent.
by djafrot on Jan 24, 2009 7:02 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
He does
and I would be very happy if Seattle selected him, but I just don’t see it.
by John Morgan on Jan 24, 2009 7:03 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
hm.
No WR.
No offensive line.
No CB either (already drafted two, high).
What’s left?
by djafrot on Jan 24, 2009 7:10 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
And no QB in the 1st, with Matt. And no Aaron Curry, as
we already have star LBs and cannot commit more to the position. And no Raji, who has character concerns.
Yeah, what IS left?
by redwolf75 on Jan 24, 2009 7:11 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I don't think saying Matt is the starter means Seattle won't select a quarterback
It just means he won’t have to worry about his job.
by John Morgan on Jan 24, 2009 7:13 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
That's a good point.
I don’t see Stafford being around at #4, and I doubt Ruskell picks Sanchez (left early, little production)
by redwolf75 on Jan 24, 2009 7:14 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I think he'll be there.
Lions won’t take him. Remember their new coach is a FO adherent and Stafford is so-so according to the Lewin projection system. Rams probably take Malcolm Jenkins. They are desperate for corner talent. Like, deadly desperate. I can’t say on the Cheifs until they have a coach. I think Seattle takes Stafford at four and I think people will freak and truly I don’t know what to think.
by John Morgan on Jan 24, 2009 7:20 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I thought Rams would go O-Line.
They ahve so many needs though.
by LantermanC on Jan 24, 2009 8:15 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
He might be bluffing, but I could see him taking a quarterback
by John Morgan on Jan 24, 2009 7:12 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Maybe Sanchez
but Stafford fits Ruskell’s profile of being a prospect for a thousand years whereas Sanchez is a one year starter.
by John Morgan on Jan 24, 2009 7:14 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
He fits a lot of other ways too
big time production from a big time conference, QB wins and a good comp% in his senior year. He’s smaller than your prototype would be but thats never bothered Ruskell much.
by Nate Dogg on Jan 24, 2009 7:18 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Yep
Past few weeks I’ve been thinking Stafford makes a ton of sense. Great deep pass for Knapp, too.
by John Morgan on Jan 24, 2009 7:22 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Stafford, Robinson in the second/late first.
This is the first season Ruskell has the keys to the offense and I think he makes a splash.
by John Morgan on Jan 24, 2009 7:23 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
More I think about it the less I see Ruskell drafting Crabtree.
by redwolf75 on Jan 24, 2009 10:54 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I have a sneaking suspicion that Crabtree might not even be there.
It’s becoming increasingly evident he’s the best player in this draft.

There’s no chemistry or timing.

Personally, I don’t take the Senior Bowl very seriously. It’s so sloppy and disorganized.
by John Morgan on Jan 24, 2009 6:58 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I like that though, it seems to isolate talent
by Nate Dogg on Jan 24, 2009 7:01 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I like it from a draft perspective
this is terrible football
by Nate Dogg on Jan 24, 2009 7:01 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I was going to say that.
It’s like the Pro Bowl. A bunch of guys who never play together, playing the most team-oriented sport, forced into simplified systems (which clearly favours the defense).
I guess it’s good for one-on-one matchups.
by djafrot on Jan 24, 2009 7:01 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
The north running backs have looked very good
which probably speaks well of Unger and Mack. Not sure who else is on their line.
by Nate Dogg on Jan 24, 2009 7:06 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
if we pick Matthew Stafford
i may have to throw up. He just does not look all that impressive to me. He has a low completion percentage and plays poorly even when his running backs are lighting it up. Sure he’s won a lot of games, but have we learned nothing from our last Georgia quarterback? Or any recent Georgia quarterback? Yes I know that’s not a fair comparison, good NFL qb’s have been scattered throughout different schools that seldom repeat, but he just seems the top leftover after Bradford and McCoy failed to enter the draft and very over hyped simply because of arm strength.
by B.B.Finnegan on Jan 25, 2009 2:18 AM PST reply actions 0 recs
This is not an endorsement for Stafford, but I will say this
He’s not a leftover. Stafford is the reigning pro prospect and Bradford and McCoy are the productive college arms with questionable pro potential. Part of why Stafford’s completion percentage is low is that Mark Richt runs a vertical, pro style offense.
by John Morgan on Jan 25, 2009 7:54 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
You mean the same vertical, pro style offense
that David Greene played in? I know it may very well be comparing apples to oranges, but I still can’t shake the comparison. They both had very similar numbers as did D.J. Shockley. His arm and potential alone make him worth a draft pick, and he has shown progress and better numbers all three years at Georgia, but a top first rounder? Of course, weather he’s successful in the NFL or not will come down to things we won’t know, his character, leadership, competitiveness, but still it worry’s me.
by B.B.Finnegan on Jan 25, 2009 4:05 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I think everyone agrees that Stafford is NOT a David Greene.
You can’t really can’t make that comparison due to a few similarities.
by redwolf75 on Jan 25, 2009 4:33 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
a few similarities?
it’s not just David Greene, statistically wise there has been virtually no difference for Bulldog quarterbacks since Quincy Carter, or rather, since Mark Richt. That’s 4 straight quarterbacks with similar stats and records the first 3 of which haven’t done much in the NFL. While I certainly agree that’s not the be all end all and Stafford could be something special, I do think it’s a legitimate question mark.
by B.B.Finnegan on Jan 25, 2009 6:19 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Not all of the Georgia QB look statistically similar
Stafford’s senior line: 3459 yards, 25TD, 10INT, 61.4comp.
Shockley’s senior line: 2588, 24TD, 5INT, 55.8comp.
Greene’s senior line: 2508 yard, 20TD, 4INT, 58.5comp%.
by Nate Dogg on Jan 27, 2009 5:09 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I'd argue what will make him successful at the next level
is the ability to adjust to guys that are bigger and faster, to nfl defensive schemes, and to make quick decisions while using the pocket effectively…. Leadership, character, competetiveness are great but I could have all of those in spades and I would not even sniff a highschool football team.
by LantermanC on Jan 25, 2009 8:54 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Agreed.
As much as I dislike Bradford, Stafford looks even worse. I would be horrified if we drafted him.
