Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Reggie Williams - Because the offseason is slow and looooong

The always credible and spot on TNT is reporting that Reggie Williams has interest in being a Hawk.  He's got the ability to opt out of his contract this year and test the free agent waters.  Judging by what he said about potentially looking to play in Seattle and his notorious abundance of confidence I think it's a good bet he'll look to cash in this offseason (although I would hope his agent would fight it tooth and nail).

Sure it's just the beginnings of the offseason rumors and what if's and I'm guessing that most people don't have a very good taste in their mouth concerning Williams. But if you look beyond "first round bust" this could be an interesting add for the Hawks.  First the counting stats:

2005 - 35 catches, 445 yards, 12.7 YPC, 0 TD

2006 - 52 catches, 616 yards, 11.8 YPC, 4TD

2007 - 38 catches, 629 yards, 16.6 YPC, 10TD

2008 - 37 catches, 364 yards, 9.8 YPC, 3TD

To me that looks like a player trending upwards with a down year on a bad offense in 2008.  Maybe someone can read his 2007 year better than me, I'm not entirely sure if the drop in catches while maintaining the same amount of yards speaks to fluke or jump in ability.  Analytical stats:

2005 - 80th DYAR, 56% catch rate

2006 - 65th in DYAR, 57% catch rate

2007 - 25th in DYAR, 63% catch rate

2008 - 56th in DYAR, 61% catch rate

To expect him to rank in the top 32 of recievers is obviously a stretch, but if you look at his last 3 years as a period he looks to be an above average 3rd option.  Not exactly what Jacksonville was looking to get with their 9th pick, but thats their problem.  Seattle would be adding a physically talented, albeit not exactly fast, big reciever for what should be a cheap price.

There are several things to dislike about Reggie.  He's never been known as a hard worker.  He'd be blocking the younger recievers like Obo, Taylor and Kent.  Bringing him in would eliminate the option of bringing back KRob.  And he doesn't play special teams.

So what do you think? Is he potential waiting to pop or garbage on his way out of the NFL?

Underachiever, take a pass

We don’t need another 3rd option. We need a 1st option possession receiver to keep the chains moving, like Housh. Branch at 2 and Robinson at 3 along with a big supporting cast of other guys already there. I see us going CB in Round 1 and OC/OG in Round 2 so best we could do for a WR in the draft is Round 3 or 4. Hence, we need a number 1 or 2 (if you want to call Branch 1) in free agency.

I'd rather keep K-Rob over him.

He’s also an above average 3rd option, and can play special teams (he was Pro-Bowl KR for Christ’s sake), probably costs a hell of a lot cheaper too.

I'd rather go get Housh AND keep K-Rob

and release others to make room. For the reasons you stated, K-Rob on special teams and platoon the receivers. Hell, we need 4 in at times anyway. And, given our history with injuries, we need depth with talent, not just warm bodies.

Considering how much I want to invest in the offensive side of the ball

I want Crabtree, Housh, K-Rob, Branch, Engram, Burleson, maybe even Hass. I know that’s complete overkill and we’d have some really eclectic mix of awesome WR talent/depth, but I can’t bear watching Burleson be our #1 receiver while we’re fielding crap like Logan Payne and Billy McMullen. Hass deserves better.

I'd rather have Williams than Engram at this point in their careers

and their price tags should be similar, Williams possibly being cheaper.

I'm not sure, but that is an intriguing idea.

I do have a soft spot for Reggie’s days as a Husky. He was a man among boys at times with UW.

Really? I'd much rather have Engram.

Williams is younger, bigger, more physically talented

and his production on a worse offense isn’t that much lower than Engrams. Put a similar, cheap, price tag on both of them and I’d take Williams.

by Nate Dogg on Jan 31, 2009 5:35 PM PST up reply actions

He's also slower and not nearly as cerebral a player as Engram.

Engram gets by his declining skills with extreme hard work and smarts.

What about K-Rob's knee?

He could barely practice on it last year, and they monitored his snaps in games. More than any of the manufactured “drama” about TR even wanting him around … IMO, that’s what the decision will boil down to – whether or not his knee can stand up a whole season. And because of that, I don’t see K-Rob as a ST guy anymore, either. Green Bay had started phasing him out as their KR a few seasons ago. He can barely hold up as a WR, much less pulling dual duty. If K-Rob were still healthy, then I think he’s the perfect insurance policy as a 3rd/4th WR and KR guy …. but he’s not, so that really impacts his value. With Branch & Burleson already big question marks, it’s hard to justify spending another roster spot on another WR with a spotty health record.

If Williams was available for cheap (which I think he will be – probably DJ Hackett money at best) then it’s a good flyer to take, IMO. Not as the only way to address the position, of course, but as another body to throw in the mix.

I wouldn’t worry about Williams “blocking” any of the other young WRs, because he’s young himself – same age as Obo, only a year older than Taylor & Payne.

Thats something I realised after I posted this

Williams would be 26 at the start of next season, he’s still very young.

Man, Williams was awesome at Washington....

Too bad he never translated that into the pros.

Is that the light at the end of the tunnel, or the headlights of an oncoming train?

by Benne on Jan 29, 2009 11:44 PM PST reply actions

He was so good at Washington

I say a definite yes. Get back Cody Pickett while we’re at it just in case.

by LantermanC on Jan 30, 2009 9:55 AM PST up reply actions

Tui and Stanback should be brought back too.

If we have two kickers, it only makes sense to have 5 QBs.

by SeaTownBlueDevil on Jan 30, 2009 10:58 AM PST up reply actions

Stanback has been soiled with a Cowboys jersey

Never again do I want him to set foot in the state of Washington unless he’s on the visiting team losing by 3 scores in the fourth quarter.

I've got plenty of Koren love in me.

Ok, after writing that subject line, I realize how incredibly gay that sounds. But anyway, the man’s clearly talented and I think he’d make a great 3rd or 4th receiver behind Crabtree/Housh (hopefully), Branch, and Burleson. Then if Burleson gets injured, he can take over returning duties too. While he does drop a lot of catches, YAC is especially important for a 3-4th receiver, and he certainly offers that.

by SeaTownBlueDevil on Jan 31, 2009 10:47 AM PST up reply actions

I think the knee issue was/is overblown.

I chalk it up to how the reason we brought him back in the first place was because we were at critical mass with our WRs, and sitting him out of Wednesday practice was just precautionary so he wouldn’t get seriously injured, knowing our luck. He was getting decent separation with little problem and didn’t appear considerably slowed on Sundays.

by Fearless Frog on Jan 31, 2009 3:05 PM PST up reply actions

Apparently, it's underblown if anything.

Koren has a bone-on-bone knee injury that extremely limits his speed and cutting ability.

It’s been around for a while, and is why no team initally signed him for the 2008 season. It took a historical dearth of WRs on the Seahawks part to sign him.

Huh. It didn't seem to show that much, if it all.

I think that is because we were not on the field

Apparantly Robinson’s knee creaked perpetually, tinman style.
But in all seriousness, I would love to get somebody with Reggie Williams physical attributes but if he cannot provide the work ethic and the route running needed in a WCO, he is about useless as Pacman Jones’ bodyguards.

by Built2Spill on Jan 31, 2009 7:42 PM PST up reply actions

Because tied with Branch as our best receiver despite being a fraction of the cost.

And he’s shown some big-play flashes, something handy for a 3rd/4th option.

Reggie Williams

I like bringing Williams here more than, say, Mike Hass. Williams has a prototypical big WR body (6-4, 212 lbs), hasn’t missed any games due to injury (which either means that he avoids injury or plays hurt), and put up pretty decent numbers over his first 5 seasons despite being on a decidedly run-first offense.

Everybody wants to sign or draft a sure thing, but finding diamonds in the rough is essential to leapfrogging others that want to do the same. If our WR coach has worked with Williams and backs acquiring him (I’m not saying that he has yet or will ever), that would be good enough for me.

I’m not convinced that his lack of production in Jacksonville means that he’ll never be anything but sub-par in the NFL.

Are you joking or are you serious?

Hass and Williams are less than one year apart in age. Hass: 0 years experience. Williams: 5 years experience. Williams is also bigger and faster.

Yes, but Wiilliams can't compare

to Mike ‘Great White Hope’ Hass.

Sando mentions the NFC West Cap space situation

http://myespn.go.com/blogs/nfcwest/0-8-88/What-cap-space-means-in-NFC-West.html

Also, a totally crazy idea I got from this is, how much would Holt cost if he were released, and would he be a good fit for the WCO?
