Super Bowl XLIII Open Thread

The matchup might suck, but the pregame analysis doesn't have to:

Advanced Football Stats project Pittsburgh as greater than two to one favorites.

Football Outsiders also projects a potential blowout, but digs a little deeper into why.

Plus, Doug's always excellent Cover-3 (1 and 2)

Ok, I'll get this started

my gut says Arizona in a blowout. My head says Pittsburgh in a blowout. I’ve learned the futility of projecting one game. I was thinking of providing some kind of preview, but tomorrow is my anniversary so my plans are: get well, spend time with my wife and wake up on Sunday to see if I really give a damn.

I really do think that this scenario would be win win.

The Steelers fans could shut the traps about how if we were good enough we would have overcome the bad officiating.
And the Cardinals fans couldn’t legitimately claim that they were the superbowl champs.

No

by Willie Mays Haze on Jan 31, 2009 2:17 AM PST up reply actions

Maybe neither team shows up for the game.

Both teams subsequently forfeit, and the Lombardi Trophy is mysteriously rewarded to the Seattle Seahawks.

by SeaTownBlueDevil on Jan 31, 2009 8:26 AM PST up reply actions

i'm hoping for a 0-0 tie

and at the end of second overtime, the teams have been playing so pitifully Goodell comes down to the field and calls it a game to spare anyone from watching any more. He then apologizes for the pitiful play and promises a better Super Bowl will be played the following week and he chooses the Lions vs the Chiefs where in that game the Lions win with 20 seconds remaining, and down by one, when a chief player intercepts the ball and returns it 90 yards in the opposite direction resulting in a safety and the Lions first win of the season and a Super Bowl championship.

or is that too impossible? hey a man can dream.

I hate Warner and I hate the Steelers.

The only acceptable solution is to have Warner break a bone while praying before the game, so Matt Leinart can come in and torch the Steelers. Final Score: Larry Leinarts (or Matt Fitzgeralds) 49, Steelers 0.

Or even Brian St. Pierre!

What’s with the Warner hate, though? He seems like a nice guy with a feel good story too, if overrated.

Yeah, how can anyone hate Warner.

He’s a great guy. That’s like hating Polamalu, who is also a great guy and tries hard every time. Some guys you just can’t hate.

I know Warner’s really religious, but I don’t see a problem talking about his religion, if he were hardcore and had a huge kurt warner ministry or cult, that would be ab it odd. A lot of athletes are uber religious for whatever reason (Tim Tebow)

by LantermanC on Jan 31, 2009 11:51 AM PST up reply actions

I like Warner

He’s has some class and is not a show-off. So what if he talks about God, which is important to him? He’s not telling anyone else they have to believe what he does. He doesn’t come off as self-righteous about it. Calling him a ‘Bible thumper’ is less indicative of Warner than it is of the commenter.

For what it's worth...

There is little chance of an Arizona win tomorrow. I cannot think of one match up that they have a clear advantage. Pittsburgh will man-handle the Cards. Say hello to Super Bowl XX 2.0.

WR vs. Pitt's shitty CBs

Don’t be fooled, Ike Taylor is trash. The trick for Zona is to give Warner a millisecond before the blitz comes.

"Part, fools!
Put up your swords. You know not what you do."

by Fearless Frog on Jan 31, 2009 10:45 PM PST up reply actions

I'm not so sure about that.

Pittsburgh has been pretty awful on offense, especially pass offense. Arizona has a good run D, so I’m not sure Pittsburgh will score many points.
I think the key to the game will be field position, and whether or not the pass rush gets to Warner.

by LantermanC on Feb 1, 2009 8:33 AM PST up reply actions

Zona's "chuck n duck" really limits a lot of Pitt's advantages

(i.e. pass rush and run stopping ability) and really hits on its disadvantages (cornerbacks).

If Zona can survive Philly’s D, I think it definitely has a chance here.

by djafrot on Jan 31, 2009 11:46 PM PST reply actions

I don't hold Philly's D in high regard.

Its a unit of marginal talent that’s extraordinarily coached. But the basic principle of that game is still intact, use quick out passes to beat the blitz.

I know I know people always say, well if they were, the car companies would lower the amount of commercials they have because they’re not stupid and have highly qualified people working for them, but the past 30 years might disagree with this assertion.

Eh... I don't know.

If it were me I’d admit something, maybe not admit a certain loss, but I would say that yes the officiating was very poor and very one sided.
Actually, knowing myself I’d probably go off on a Jerry Porter or Ray Lewis-type rant and blast the NFL for tainting a win for myself and my city and call the whole ordeal inexcusable that the biggest game of the year and an entire season was ruined due to a mistake of a few. And I wouldn’t give a crap if I got fined a million dollars (assuming I made over 1.2 Million). But that’s just me.

Once again, the Steelers get a drive all on the refs

This drive is nothing without the facemask on DRC while Holmes initiated the facemask and the roughing call on what should have been intentional grounding. Warner’s been getting hit after the ball was out all game. But of course, Pittsburgh is “physical” so they should be allowed such transgressions.

Ok, Just throw it up Warner.

And if it was Pittsburgh they’d give Pitt the benefit of the doubt.

Reviewed and decided it was a fumble.

I guess they’re saying that the defender tipped the ball as the hand went back. But that rule has been consistently enforced the same way. If the arm is coming forward, even if the ball’s been tipped, it’s a pass attempt. That was weird.

Good game though.

I’ll never forgive the Cards for that knee-jerk blitz that gave Holmes that space to run after catch. I realize the defender slipped, but he shouldn’t have had that kind of space. It was a deliriously stupid, John Marshall-like call.

I thoght they should've taken a tv timeout to review it further

it’s a questionable call on the last play of the game, thats not how it should end.

Didn't think it was close to a fumble

Well... so ends the Cardinals dynasty.

They do have a lot of talent, but without a quarterback I don’t see much.

You lost without a chance for your hail mary. Suckers.

And fuck the Steelers.

Fuck.

You know Warner’s not going to retire now.

Double fuck.

I was cheerin’ for ya, Cards, but ya blew it.
