How the Yellow Line is Made
This NBC Sports video shows the viewer how the yellow First Down marker is displayed on the broadcast.
There was a point in time where I had some hope that perhaps one day something like QuaterbackF/X would be created. After seeing the struggle to create a simple yellow line on the gridiron, I'm much more doubtful.

Well..
There are two issues that make a QBF/X system extremely difficult:
1. The quarterback is moving around, as are the receivers.
2. There is no static ‘strike zone’, where the ball needs to be placed depends a lot on the route and the coverage.
