Great googly moogly

didn’t see the game, but I HAVE seen Crompton.

Wow.

Now, I’m not one to gossip, and you didn’t hear this from me… but…

Has anyone done less with more than Richt? Maybe just those of us down here in the deep South are inundated every year with how great Georgia is going to be, and they are a perennial disappointment. I kinda thought they might be rebuilding this year but yeesh. A tough road loss at Ok State to start the season isn’t that big of a deal—even of Ok State looks a bit overrated. But getting run by Tennessee’s offense is just bad.

A little off-topic.

I just saw on the NFL Network bottom line that we released Michael Bennett and signed Kyle Williams from the practice-squad. Damn.

Yeah, I was looking and couldn't find it.

I’d trust NFL network though, and with the injuries on the O-line, I’m actually surprised Bennett has lasted this long.

For those of you watching the Duck game, and don't know already

Our TE Ed Dickenson just might be our best prospect for the NFL. Great speed and ball skills. Gets seperation. Plows smaller DB’s. Keep an eye out.

I might be getting too old for good beers

I bought a 22 of the Stone 13th anniversary last night and barely made it through the bottle. It was tasty stuff, but at 9.3% and super malty, it did a job on me. This morning, I had to get on the banana-gatorade-Excedrin regime.

I also got a special edition Black Butte made with coffee and partially cask-aged that should be a fun one.

And food style is as mutable as fashion. Food that was considered objectively good in 1990 is considered out of date or old-fashioned now. Other styles of food or cooking that are even older are coming back into style.

There is no sense assigning objective value to these things if they their worth is so subject to change.

If you like the Coens humor, the darker elements and the comedy of manners style they sometimes use, it’s a very funny movie that is worth some rippin laughs. I do not think it holds the emotional resonance of some of their best work. Like many Coen films, it is the middle part of a story with lots of ideas but little resolution. It may be foolish to completely write off the potential most successful college player of all time, but I don't see it.

He is, and he isn't. He's a great athlete, but he doesn't have a great fit as a position outside of maybe TE.

by John Morgan on Oct 10, 2009 5:19 PM PDT up reply actions

Feel free to correct me on this, as you watch oodles of film.

To me, the yardage that Tebow gains up the middle in the college game is a product of his size, determination, and superior athleticism. Put him in the NFL and he’s ~ late-career Jamal Lewis, which is not all that desirable.

by abender20 on Oct 10, 2009 5:21 PM PDT up reply actions

The pass-run possibility is a huge advantage though.

Tebow is like Vick if Vick wasn’t a quarterback that could run like Reggie Bush, but a quarterback that could run like Jerome Bettis.

by John Morgan on Oct 10, 2009 5:24 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't see the added value of a cloud of dust as enough to offset his deficits as a passer.

Vick was dangerous because he was a freakishly superior athlete capable of burning everyone on the field for 50 yards at a time. You have to spy him. If you drop into coverage on Tebow, is he good enough to turn the corner and make you think twice?

by abender20 on Oct 10, 2009 5:28 PM PDT up reply actions

No, probably not

It’s more like Tebow out-gaps defenses the way a Wildcat does. Now, this is conditional on Tebow being a much better student and decision maker than Vick, which I think is true, but I don’t know yet. An OC working with Tebow would not build around his big play threat, but that he is a genuine running back that can churn out short yardage and consistently get positive yardage, but also throw underneath passes. That taxes the linebackers.

by John Morgan on Oct 10, 2009 5:33 PM PDT up reply actions

Ok, that's a bunch of jargon

Consider the shotgun with split backs that Florida runs. The team can run three separate directions and that is very hard to read pre-snap. It’s not a one time run, Tebow could run ten times a game and you want to commit linebackers to the middle. But sweeps and draws attack the outside. Or Tebow can PA and throw a screen pass. Or the defense can run max protect and throw a bomb. Just tons of versatility.

by John Morgan on Oct 10, 2009 5:38 PM PDT up reply actions

If a team is willing to bet the farm on an unconventional offense, absolutely.

My argument has been based on the notion that Tebow would be used in a mostly standard offense. Throw that out and he looks an awful lot better.

I see what you're saying, and it will be interesting to see what happens.

Real MMA isn't all highlight-reel knockouts

A lot of it is wresting and jiujitsu that doesn’t look all that dramatic. But pure wrestlers succeed a lot more than pure boxers.

Pure boxers usually have a chance at punch or two before they get taken down. Pure wrestlers take a little while to get the win, but they usually get takedowns and get into dominant positions more often than boxers.

since Shamrock and Gracie. That was about 10-15 years ago, the rules have changed a bit (more codified), the ownership changed and the fanbase/participants changed. Just for reference, the last UFC they held was 103 or 104.

There are very few pure strikers that have any success. The ones that do know wrestling well enough that they can defend the takedown really well or (like Lyoto Machida) have a ridiculously long reach and crazy ninja evasion skills.

Probably not

In the UFC, great boxers who can’t stuff the takedown have one, maybe two, shots at a knockout before they get taken down.

Guys like Kimbo Slice and Tank Abbott were guys with a great punch who turned into punchlines.

I don't know much,

but I thought I heard guys who are used to punching and kicking do ok until the other guy gets close and uses wrestling moves. Then they’re in unfamiliar territory and kind of screwed as to how to position themselves. Wrestling moves are pretty complicated.

Great throw and catch, Locker to Kearse.

Locker with a 20 yard Bullet.

I seriously don’t think Locker has a weakness. His biggest problem is he’s so fast that if I were him, I’d take off all the time, impeding my learning to be a pocket passer.

by LantermanC on Oct 10, 2009 8:23 PM PDT reply actions

Oh, he for sure has some weaknesses to work on,

but I meant from an ability and talent perspective, I don’t see what he can’t do. His progression this year is so damn remarkable.

by LantermanC on Oct 10, 2009 8:26 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree.

If he stays for his senior year under Sark he’ll be a top contender for the Heisman, and a top 5 pick in the draft.

He's the real deal.

And the Huskies have a top 25 recruiting class for next year so he’ll have some solid talent around him for the first time in his career

Maybe it's because I played FFVII the first time a couple years ago,

I thought VIIs graphics were so much better than other game's at the time.

Looking back, the graphics are horrible, but FFVIII was such a disappointment. I actually like Kingdom Hearts a lot. Not Kingdom Hearts 2 for some reason though. Too much of the same (which you’d think would be good).

I usually don't. But in HS when I got a simulator on the computer

I replayed most FFIII and Chrono Trigger. Probably beat them 10x each after I discovered the fast forward button. Would’ve done Mario RPG but there was a glitch in the copy I had so it froze.

My biggest gripe with FF3 is that I don't understand the plot.

At all. But Iike the gameplay. Also Sabin’s moves were annoying to do.

by LantermanC on Oct 10, 2009 9:28 PM PDT up reply actions

I thought the story was ok

but some of the characters didn’t get enough face time.

What made VI (III US) such a great game was its turn on a dime combat system and mostly non-linear 2nd half. Battles were really fun in that game.

by kearly on Oct 11, 2009 12:26 AM PDT up reply actions

So was the GBA in more modern times.

In fact, I’d propose that it had more quality RPGs than the SNES. None quite as timeless as something on the SNES, but very, very good nontheless. The dozens of modern Mega Man things, Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga, Golden Sun, dozens of others

Super Nintendo was rich with great RPGs.

Lufia II, Dragon Quest, Breath of Fire, Everything Square Made.

by John Morgan on Oct 10, 2009 9:32 PM PDT up reply actions

Super NES will never be matched

I’ve been playing games since the 80’s and still do, and I think the golden age for video games was between 1989 and 1996.

SNES was great for RPGs, great for action games, good for sports, and even had some good arcade adaptations (Street Fighter 2, MK, Bubble Bobble). Hey remember arcades back when arcades were cool?

SNES had 3 no-doubter all time great RPGs. FFIV (II US), Chrono Trigger, and FFVI (III US). I would put all three in my top 5 all time without hesitation. Breath of Fire II was a game that nobody knew about but kicked extreme amounts of ass, a very good game in an otherwise mediocre series. Lufia II was solid and will probably go down as having the best boss battle theme of all time. SMRPG seemed ridiculous when first released but was a good, even challenging game. Dragon Quest VI (only in japan or internet emulator) was very good, but not as good as III or IV for NES.

Its a shame John that you never went past 16 bit, because the Playstation had a very good RPG crop as well. FFVII is deservingly the called one of the best of all time, and FFIX is very under-rated, its right up there with the best in the series. FFVIII (and take it from me, I’ve beaten it 5 times), is a really weird game and you will probably hate it. Its probably the worst game in the series.

Another game you should definitely check out is Suikoden and Suikoden II. II in particular is very good, probably the best non-squaresoft J-RPG I’ve played. Very fun and fast combat with an excellent story.

By the way, if you ever want to play those games again just good emulators. I use PSX for playstation games and I think SNES9x for SNES. You might not expect it, but some games are better on emulator, and its certainly worth it for great games you missed or that didn’t come to america (like some of the DQ series).
