Great googly moogly
didn’t see the game, but I HAVE seen Crompton.
Wow.
Now, I’m not one to gossip, and you didn’t hear this from me… but…
Has anyone done less with more than Richt? Maybe just those of us down here in the deep South are inundated every year with how great Georgia is going to be, and they are a perennial disappointment. I kinda thought they might be rebuilding this year but yeesh. A tough road loss at Ok State to start the season isn’t that big of a deal—even of Ok State looks a bit overrated. But getting run by Tennessee’s offense is just bad.

A little off-topic.
I just saw on the NFL Network bottom line that we released Michael Bennett and signed Kyle Williams from the practice-squad. Damn.
Yeah, I was looking and couldn't find it.
I’d trust NFL network though, and with the injuries on the O-line, I’m actually surprised Bennett has lasted this long.
For those of you watching the Duck game, and don't know already
Our TE Ed Dickenson just might be our best prospect for the NFL. Great speed and ball skills. Gets seperation. Plows smaller DB’s. Keep an eye out.

Of all the Dogfish products, I really like Raison and the Marron. Both work perfectly for my tastes.
It's interesting.
I mean, not “interesting” the way Midas Touch or 120 Minute is, but interesting in that I have no idea what it is or whether I like it or not.

Stores that carry Dogfish out here generally have Raison, 90, Midas Touch, Marron, and occasionally World Wide Stout.

Well, of you like a movie better, it is better to that person...
Better doesn’t always mean better for the average person.
Budweiser is the best beer in the world (in my opinion), could mean best for me, or could mean I think it’s the best for everyone.
"Best" and "better" are absolutes.
There’s no such thing as “it is better to me” or “it is the best as far as I am concerned.” You can say “I prefer,” but when you are making value judgments you have to be prepared to back up your assertions with facts.

The idea that art criticism is the only measure by which to evaluate a mass-market medium like film is simply close-minded. I’m not going to defend Jackas s or defame CK, but I’m not going to accept that their is an objective standard for their criticism.

have to place in these discussions. There are so many dimensions along which these things can be compared that “best” and “worst” are, at best, oversimplifications.

All I am saying is this;
if I say “of all the sour ales I’ve had, Allagash Confluence is my favorite” then I am merely stating a preference.
If I say, as I did above, “Allagash Confluence is the best sour ale I’ve ever had” then I am opening my statement to harsher criticism.

If you tell me that you would rather have a Tsingtao than a Hofbrau Hefeweizen,

Eh, no.
Enjoyment versus critical assessment. Just like plenty of people enjoyed watching Reggie Bush, but how many were qualified to know how he would play in the NFL?
Whats the measure of success for art or pop art or media or food?
How many delicacies in one culture are found objectively repulsive in another?

Who's talking about food critics?
And food style is as mutable as fashion. Food that was considered objectively good in 1990 is considered out of date or old-fashioned now. Other styles of food or cooking that are even older are coming back into style.
There is no sense assigning objective value to these things if they their worth is so subject to change.

I think you have to establish a criteria for judgement
or else this argument will go round and round.
The whole process of selecting criteria is subjective
even if the judgement based on that criteria may not be.
""I wanted to be a quarterback, but I got hungry."
-LG Rob Sims
If two sides do not agree on or at least discuss the criteria
arguments tend towards a rhetorical back and forth without much weight or chance of resolution.
Music, filmmaking, writing, cooking, brewing, coffee roasting, etc are all to some extent art.
There is subjective preference and their is objective critical opinion.
I would rather watch Terminator 2 than Grand Hotel, but Grand Hotel is the artistically better film. I would rather listen to the Melvins than the Kinks (generally) but Village Green Preservation Society is an artistically better album than Houdini. And so forth.
by Aaron Campeau on Oct 10, 2009 4:23 PM PDT up reply actions
I am having a love affair with VGPS right now
I think then the criteria would be artistic merit, and I think that is the hold up in this conversation. You are arguing artistic merit is objective. The counter argument is that taste is subjective. The two sides are not arguing the same subject.
And I've actually listened to the Kinks a lot more than the Melvins recently too.

If you like the Coens humor, the darker elements and the comedy of manners style they sometimes use, it’s a very funny movie that is worth some rippin laughs. I do not think it holds the emotional resonance of some of their best work. Like many Coen films, it is the middle part of a story with lots of ideas but little resolution. Like all Coen films, the dialogue, casting and attention to detail is masterful. It’s a fun, dense movie, but a slight disappointment.

by Aaron Campeau on Oct 10, 2009 5:04 PM PDT up reply actions
This is completely reckless of me
but some part of me thinks Tebow will find a way to make in the NFL. You know the league would love that. He needs a type of offense, something like the Knapp-Seneca offense.
It may be foolish to completely write off the potential most successful college player of all time, but I don't see it.
I see him as a more successful Eric Crouch. He plays in the perfect system and Urban Meyer has assembled the most impressive set of skill position talent in all of college football.
He is, and he isn't. He's a great athlete, but he doesn't have a great fit as a position outside of maybe TE.
He’s certainly not straight-line fast, and he isn’t brutally quick. He is powerful and has good vision. Maybe he’s a TE?
I would run a two quarterback offense, play Tebow at fullback
and keep a Shaun Hill type under center.
I guess if you are willing to work around the usual NFL construct, sure.
Why not Pat White, at that point?
I think Tebow could withstand
100 rushes up the gut and still be a good gadget quarterback, I don’t think White could.
Feel free to correct me on this, as you watch oodles of film.
To me, the yardage that Tebow gains up the middle in the college game is a product of his size, determination, and superior athleticism. Put him in the NFL and he’s ~ late-career Jamal Lewis, which is not all that desirable.
The pass-run possibility is a huge advantage though.
Tebow is like Vick if Vick wasn’t a quarterback that could run like Reggie Bush, but a quarterback that could run like Jerome Bettis.
I don't see the added value of a cloud of dust as enough to offset his deficits as a passer.
Vick was dangerous because he was a freakishly superior athlete capable of burning everyone on the field for 50 yards at a time. You have to spy him. If you drop into coverage on Tebow, is he good enough to turn the corner and make you think twice?
No, probably not
It’s more like Tebow out-gaps defenses the way a Wildcat does. Now, this is conditional on Tebow being a much better student and decision maker than Vick, which I think is true, but I don’t know yet. An OC working with Tebow would not build around his big play threat, but that he is a genuine running back that can churn out short yardage and consistently get positive yardage, but also throw underneath passes. That taxes the linebackers.
Ok, that's a bunch of jargon
Consider the shotgun with split backs that Florida runs. The team can run three separate directions and that is very hard to read pre-snap. It’s not a one time run, Tebow could run ten times a game and you want to commit linebackers to the middle. But sweeps and draws attack the outside. Or Tebow can PA and throw a screen pass. Or the defense can run max protect and throw a bomb. Just tons of versatility.
If a team is willing to bet the farm on an unconventional offense, absolutely.
My argument has been based on the notion that Tebow would be used in a mostly standard offense. Throw that out and he looks an awful lot better.
I see what you're saying, and it will be interesting to see what happens.
I won’t count Tebow out because he is clearly driven to levels not normally seen in college athletes.

It's two different things right now though
Football players are true prodigies and most NFL talent has excelled at every level since a developmental phase—10,11-15,16, etc. Most fighters are from others sports and are probably five, ten years into their discipline.

I've seen so many fights end
when one guy kicks and the other dude just lands one on the guy’s jaw. Humans are not that tough. A good bareknuckled punch is enough topple ya.
There are no bareknuckled punches in MMA
and it takes a lot of luck/skill/power to get a knockout on the first punch of the match.
""I wanted to be a quarterback, but I got hungry."

Hyperbole, the bareknuckled.
This is not a boxing glove.
You should watch vintage Tyson. He was a human punching machine. His hook was death. He punched through blocks and clipped guy’s jaws. MMA guys don’t know how to dodge a punch, they will if, like I said the real talent gets there, but this generation is not impressive to me.
Real MMA isn't all highlight-reel knockouts
A lot of it is wresting and jiujitsu that doesn’t look all that dramatic. But pure wrestlers succeed a lot more than pure boxers.
Pure boxers usually have a chance at punch or two before they get taken down. Pure wrestlers take a little while to get the win, but they usually get takedowns and get into dominant positions more often than boxers.
""I wanted to be a quarterback, but I got hungry."
-LG Rob Sims
I'll tell you what
I watched UFC 1,2,3,4,5—the last two I think. But then I dropped out for a while, so if that’s the complexion* of the new UFC, excuse my ignorance, but it wasn’t the occasional punch out. I remember Joyce Grace versus Ken Shamrock, and Grace was clearly winning, but the UFC wanted action so if Shamrock could battle to a stalemate they’d separate them. Eventually Shamrock won punching despite being clearly the inferior grappler.
The game's changed a bunch
since Shamrock and Gracie. That was about 10-15 years ago, the rules have changed a bit (more codified), the ownership changed and the fanbase/participants changed. Just for reference, the last UFC they held was 103 or 104.
There are very few pure strikers that have any success. The ones that do know wrestling well enough that they can defend the takedown really well or (like Lyoto Machida) have a ridiculously long reach and crazy ninja evasion skills.

I haven't watched SportsCenter in probably 2 years, yet I'm still somehow inundated with this crap.
Maybe it’s imagined.
Sportscenter is a childhood thing for me
It was right on my level then, but I haven’t watched in..something like ten years. Shit.
If I wanted a likely drunk man with a lazy eye to scream at me about the Cubs,
I’d get on the L at 2am.
The problem is that you can't be sure that stabby isn't also a possibility.
I have had some all-time great conversations with crazy people on the train while headed downtown at night with friends.
That is true
especially Chicago Bum. Portland Bum is former Rainbow Coalition. Sorta perma-baked and agreeable—stabby but reluctant and tired.

Brandon James is awesome. He's like Reggie Bush without the carries, and therefore without the hype.
He gives that impression, doesn't he? I love that Florida doesn't care about positional designations
and tosses their best athletes and football players out there every play. Demps in the backfield? James out running routes.
No kidding.
Veteran move. Not sure how the ref’s miss that.

My biggest gripe with FF3 is that I don't understand the plot.
At all. But Iike the gameplay. Also Sabin’s moves were annoying to do.
I thought the story was ok
but some of the characters didn’t get enough face time.
What made VI (III US) such a great game was its turn on a dime combat system and mostly non-linear 2nd half. Battles were really fun in that game.
So was the GBA in more modern times.
In fact, I’d propose that it had more quality RPGs than the SNES. None quite as timeless as something on the SNES, but very, very good nontheless. The dozens of modern Mega Man things, Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga, Golden Sun, dozens of others

Super Nintendo was rich with great RPGs.
Lufia II, Dragon Quest, Breath of Fire, Everything Square Made.
Super Mario RPG!!!
I played through this like 10 times.
Super NES will never be matched
I’ve been playing games since the 80’s and still do, and I think the golden age for video games was between 1989 and 1996.
SNES was great for RPGs, great for action games, good for sports, and even had some good arcade adaptations (Street Fighter 2, MK, Bubble Bobble). Hey remember arcades back when arcades were cool?
SNES had 3 no-doubter all time great RPGs. FFIV (II US), Chrono Trigger, and FFVI (III US). I would put all three in my top 5 all time without hesitation. Breath of Fire II was a game that nobody knew about but kicked extreme amounts of ass, a very good game in an otherwise mediocre series. Lufia II was solid and will probably go down as having the best boss battle theme of all time. SMRPG seemed ridiculous when first released but was a good, even challenging game. Dragon Quest VI (only in japan or internet emulator) was very good, but not as good as III or IV for NES.
Its a shame John that you never went past 16 bit, because the Playstation had a very good RPG crop as well. FFVII is deservingly the called one of the best of all time, and FFIX is very under-rated, its right up there with the best in the series. FFVIII (and take it from me, I’ve beaten it 5 times), is a really weird game and you will probably hate it. Its probably the worst game in the series.
Another game you should definitely check out is Suikoden and Suikoden II. II in particular is very good, probably the best non-squaresoft J-RPG I’ve played. Very fun and fast combat with an excellent story.
By the way, if you ever want to play those games again just good emulators. I use PSX for playstation games and I think SNES9x for SNES. You might not expect it, but some games are better on emulator, and its certainly worth it for great games you missed or that didn’t come to america (like some of the DQ series).
Ninkasi Oatis is good, but Samuel Smith is about 1,000 times better than any other I've had so I usually stick with that.

Oh man I don't know how I forgot Anderson Valley Barney Flats.
I like it almost as much as Samuel Smith but it’s a different take on the style. Lost Coast 8-Ball is good too.

USA is beating Honduras 3-2
a win here gets them in the World Cup
not that anyone here cares about soccer….
Really?
World cup 2002 is what got me. It was Korea/Japan, and I was living in China that summer, and everyone there was crazy with soccer fever. I like how the national games mean so much more (comparing it to basketball). I can’t get into the Sounders for whatever reason though.
Zidane's Headbutt got me into it.

If you go to a Sounders game
you’ll get hooked.
I played soccer for 11 years so i’m sure that helps my appreciation.

I played for fun
but I think what me appreciate was my school chum Hayden Barbosa. What that dude could do with a ball was righteous.
Good man
Same here… well minus the gymnastics. Only at Olympics time will I watch it.
Who’s pumped for Vancouver next year!?

I guess so.
I’m a bit surprised that guys posting on a football board would admit to their demented interest in soccer. Sort of like wearing pink to the Village People reunion tour.
And the USA clinches a spot!!
South Africa here we come!!

"Tim Tebow looked nothing short of superhuman. But he needed the Gators' D to stop LSU."
…Seriously, what the fuck BSPN?

I'm happy for him and glad he's playing again,
but he was unremarkable for most of the game.

Being a virgin at that college is superhuman, isn't it?
