Great googly moogly

didn’t see the game, but I HAVE seen Crompton.

Wow.

Now, I’m not one to gossip, and you didn’t hear this from me… but…

Has anyone done less with more than Richt? Maybe just those of us down here in the deep South are inundated every year with how great Georgia is going to be, and they are a perennial disappointment. I kinda thought they might be rebuilding this year but yeesh. A tough road loss at Ok State to start the season isn’t that big of a deal—even of Ok State looks a bit overrated. But getting run by Tennessee’s offense is just bad.

A little off-topic.

I just saw on the NFL Network bottom line that we released Michael Bennett and signed Kyle Williams from the practice-squad. Damn.

I wish I could find confirmation elsewhere

though I guess NFL Network is confirmation.

Yeah, I was looking and couldn't find it.

I’d trust NFL network though, and with the injuries on the O-line, I’m actually surprised Bennett has lasted this long.

For those of you watching the Duck game, and don't know already

Our TE Ed Dickenson just might be our best prospect for the NFL. Great speed and ball skills. Gets seperation. Plows smaller DB’s. Keep an eye out.

The list of beers I need to hunt down in my 5 day stint in Seattle in December is such

that I will either spend the majority of my time there inebriated or hospitalized.

It's not like I can't find good beer here.

Of the three mega-alcohol Dogfish beers

(World Wide, 120 Minute and Raison d’extra) 120 Minute is definitely my favorite.

I might be getting too old for good beers

I bought a 22 of the Stone 13th anniversary last night and barely made it through the bottle. It was tasty stuff, but at 9.3% and super malty, it did a job on me. This morning, I had to get on the banana-gatorade-Excedrin regime.

I also got a special edition Black Butte made with coffee and partially cask-aged that should be a fun one.

Though it would pretty funny to go there and say “Do you have anything besides Red Hook beer, that stuff tastes like crap?”

Well, of you like a movie better, it is better to that person...

Better doesn’t always mean better for the average person.

by LantermanC on Oct 10, 2009 4:07 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

"Best" and "better" are absolutes.

There’s no such thing as “it is better to me” or “it is the best as far as I am concerned.” You can say “I prefer,” but when you are making value judgments you have to be prepared to back up your assertions with facts.

by acblue on Oct 10, 2009 4:09 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

They are not absolutes.

Tom Brady is the best QB. Best QB in his given system under his given coach maybe, but perhaps Peyton Manning is better under a different system. There are always qualifications and restrictions to be made. Better and Best aren’t like distances of time.

And food style is as mutable as fashion. Food that was considered objectively good in 1990 is considered out of date or old-fashioned now. Other styles of food or cooking that are even older are coming back into style.

There is no sense assigning objective value to these things if they their worth is so subject to change.

Music, filmmaking, writing, cooking, brewing, coffee roasting, etc are all to some extent art.

There is subjective preference and their is objective critical opinion.

I would rather watch Terminator 2 than Grand Hotel, but Grand Hotel is the artistically better film. I would rather listen to the Melvins than the Kinks (generally) but Village Green Preservation Society is an artistically better album than Houdini. And so forth.

'A Serious Man' Review before I leave

If you like the Coens humor, the darker elements and the comedy of manners style they sometimes use, it’s a very funny movie that is worth some rippin laughs. I do not think it holds the emotional resonance of some of their best work. Like many Coen films, it is the middle part of a story with lots of ideas but little resolution. Like all Coen films, the dialogue, casting and attention to detail is masterful. It’s a fun, dense movie, but a slight disappointment.

To me, the yardage that Tebow gains up the middle in the college game is a product of his size, determination, and superior athleticism. Put him in the NFL and he’s ~ late-career Jamal Lewis, which is not all that desirable.

by abender20 on Oct 10, 2009 5:21 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

The pass-run possibility is a huge advantage though.

Tebow is like Vick if Vick wasn’t a quarterback that could run like Reggie Bush, but a quarterback that could run like Jerome Bettis.

by John Morgan on Oct 10, 2009 5:24 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't see the added value of a cloud of dust as enough to offset his deficits as a passer.

Vick was dangerous because he was a freakishly superior athlete capable of burning everyone on the field for 50 yards at a time. You have to spy him. If you drop into coverage on Tebow, is he good enough to turn the corner and make you think twice?

by abender20 on Oct 10, 2009 5:28 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

No, probably not

It’s more like Tebow out-gaps defenses the way a Wildcat does. Now, this is conditional on Tebow being a much better student and decision maker than Vick, which I think is true, but I don’t know yet. An OC working with Tebow would not build around his big play threat, but that he is a genuine running back that can churn out short yardage and consistently get positive yardage, but also throw underneath passes. That taxes the linebackers.

by John Morgan on Oct 10, 2009 5:33 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ok, that's a bunch of jargon

Consider the shotgun with split backs that Florida runs. The team can run three separate directions and that is very hard to read pre-snap. It’s not a one time run, Tebow could run ten times a game and you want to commit linebackers to the middle. But sweeps and draws attack the outside. Or Tebow can PA and throw a screen pass. Or the defense can run max protect and throw a bomb. Just tons of versatility.

by John Morgan on Oct 10, 2009 5:38 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

If a team is willing to bet the farm on an unconventional offense, absolutely.

My argument has been based on the notion that Tebow would be used in a mostly standard offense. Throw that out and he looks an awful lot better.

by abender20 on Oct 10, 2009 5:40 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I see what you're saying, and it will be interesting to see what happens.

I won’t count Tebow out because he is clearly driven to levels not normally seen in college athletes.

Some fighters are athletic, some have got beer guts

The knockout punch is a great equalizer, but the wrestling requires great stamina.

Lesnar is a special type of freak. He’s a heavyweight that has to cut down to 265 lbs and still has pretty good quickness. I can’t believe its all natural (especially coming from professional wrestling), but he’s just bigger, stronger and faster than anybody he faces.

It's two different things right now though

Football players are true prodigies and most NFL talent has excelled at every level since a developmental phase—10,11-15,16, etc. Most fighters are from others sports and are probably five, ten years into their discipline.

Sure, its not there yet

A lot of the successful fighters, though, started as wrestlers. They spend most of their lives learning wrestling and conditioning and then switch to MMA.

Hyperbole, the bareknuckled.

This is not a boxing glove.

You should watch vintage Tyson. He was a human punching machine. His hook was death. He punched through blocks and clipped guy’s jaws. MMA guys don’t know how to dodge a punch, they will if, like I said the real talent gets there, but this generation is not impressive to me.

by John Morgan on Oct 10, 2009 6:22 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Real MMA isn't all highlight-reel knockouts

A lot of it is wresting and jiujitsu that doesn’t look all that dramatic. But pure wrestlers succeed a lot more than pure boxers.

Pure boxers usually have a chance at punch or two before they get taken down. Pure wrestlers take a little while to get the win, but they usually get takedowns and get into dominant positions more often than boxers.

I'll tell you what

I watched UFC 1,2,3,4,5—the last two I think. But then I dropped out for a while, so if that’s the complexion* of the new UFC, excuse my ignorance, but it wasn’t the occasional punch out. I remember Joyce Grace versus Ken Shamrock, and Grace was clearly winning, but the UFC wanted action so if Shamrock could battle to a stalemate they’d separate them. Eventually Shamrock won punching despite being clearly the inferior grappler.

by John Morgan on Oct 10, 2009 9:37 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

The game's changed a bunch

since Shamrock and Gracie. That was about 10-15 years ago, the rules have changed a bit (more codified), the ownership changed and the fanbase/participants changed. Just for reference, the last UFC they held was 103 or 104.

There are very few pure strikers that have any success. The ones that do know wrestling well enough that they can defend the takedown really well or (like Lyoto Machida) have a ridiculously long reach and crazy ninja evasion skills.
