Take Patrick Kerney..please.

The Patriots release Joey Galloway.

If you have speculation, rumors or ideas, this is the place to post. I think Seattle may make a move, but I do not think this will be a busy or dramatic trade deadline.

I don't know, if you were the Patriots,

wouldn’t you take a Kerney for a 5th round pick? They need defense (excluding the Titans game), and he could line up at the DE or OLB spot. They probably wouldn’t want to pick up his salary, but he seems like their type of player (aging veteran they can still squeeze a few more years out of in the Chad Brown, Corey Dillon, Fred Taylor, Seau, etc mold).

If I were the Ravens, I’d give up a 4th or 5th for Branch. Why not? Seems like a fairly low risk high reward move for them.

PFT speculates that Pats are making cap room is for Merriman

They’ve cleared just shy of $3 million and Merriman’s salary is just shy of $3 million.

I would be happy if anyone would take Kerney

we don’t need him and he costs far more than he is worth.

Really?

The one I saw was Okung and McCoy.

by DJ C-Raig on Oct 20, 2009 10:35 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I've soured on Colt.

The way I figure it, we can always get a decent OT with the 25th pick. With our top 10 pick, let’s secure Bradford/Clausen/Locker (Though I’m ok with any of the projected top 10 picks: Suh, Gerald McCoy, Berry, Mays, Bulaga, Okung, Trent Williams, and the 3 QBs).

by LantermanC on Oct 20, 2009 10:39 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

The actual draft

Never looks like Mocks two weeks before it, let alone 6 months. But, in the interest of fun, I would not Locker or Bradford. I don’t like Clausen, he’s the Tom Brady of College Ball (in terms of media being on his dick, not skill). I’m a Beavers fan, so I’m not sure about Locker, but he has looked good this year.

by DJ C-Raig on Oct 20, 2009 12:39 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree about Clausen

I’m not one to judge people, but there’s something about his smug smile that really makes me want to punch him in the face.

by aerozeppelin on Oct 20, 2009 5:06 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed.

When he joins the ranks of the NFL, we’ll have to adjust the “Most Punchable Faces” list. He’ll be third behind Cutler and Rivers, right in front of Grossman.

by DJ C-Raig on Oct 20, 2009 6:27 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not Mays, please

I agree with the growing opinion that Mays too often goes for the big hit, misses the tackle, and gives up the big play.

Ken Hamlin redux, no thank you.

by Mr Fish on Oct 20, 2009 1:48 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I find Mays rather dirty

I’ve never seen anyone so enamored with blowing a guy up. If he wants to play linebacker, draft him, but playing safety is not about big hits and brain damage.

by John Morgan on Oct 20, 2009 2:02 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

As a USC fan

I’ve become annoyed at him this season because it seems like he does exactly what Fish is talking about 2 times a game at least. OSU’s TD came on exactly such a play.

He does get flagged more than he should for late hits (ie not all of them were bad) but I think his reputation is why this occurs.

The guy is tremendously fast but he’s undercoached as a safety. If I had one gripe about PC it is that he lets certain guys get away with too much on defense. Mualuaga had the same issue with freelancing and not playing disciplined football. Maybe if someone taught Taylor Mays how to play coverage he could be elite but right now he’s just a fast guy who likes to hit hard.

When you watch a Mays interview

He does not seem like a dumb ass that likes hitting people, he sounds like a fairly intelligent kid that likes hitting people. Polamalu was like that at USC; too eager to blow people up.
Mays could be a good LB in a 3-5 or 3-4, but I would love to see a great DB coach mold him. It would be like Jack Tatum and Kenny Easely had a baby, then Ronnie Lott and Adrian Wilson had a baby, and those babies fucked. he would be the product of Safety baby fucking.
Will it ever happen? I don’t know.

Joey Galloway is on his way to KC for a workout.

Is it possible Pioli would be interested in D. Branch? Most of the players picked during the Herm Edwards era are gone and Pioli has shown interest in players with Patriot connections. And would he be willing to part with one of their OL for Branch? I don’t see the Cheifs parting with any picks what so ever.

John thinks the Seahawks might make a move....

Well I will say the Seahawks better make a damn move. We have an abundance of DL so why not bundle Branch and Kerney together for a stud OL, or a 2nd round pick.

Something has to be done.

it seems like the Pats are in the market of upgrading their pass rush…..

Patrick “Gangle” Kerney; out the door to NE?

by durteehawk on Oct 20, 2009 10:51 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I sure hope so.

That last game sucked, but hopefully Kerney’s 2 sacks and a FF will net us a 3rd or 4th rounder.

by LantermanC on Oct 20, 2009 11:01 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hate to see Kerney go but

We have younger legs ready for his spot. The Pats are very prudish in trades so he’ll probably net us a 3rd Rounder. We should package with Branch to NE since they cut Galloway to. Maybe get us a 3rd and 5th.

by Mr. Blache III on Oct 20, 2009 11:12 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Prudish?

You mean they won’t play “I’ll show you mine if you show me yours”?

I think you meant “prudent”. :-)

why would we trade a good veteran for a draft pick? We need some young, veteran offensive lineman who don’t get hurt when they step out of their front doors. Now is the time to do that, not pick someone who may or may not work out 3 years down the road. We’ve done that already, it hasn’t worked out very well.

Definition of insanity: Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results every time.

The draft can be a great tool, but we don’t seem to have anyone who can evaluate the talent of offensive lineman in college very well. Perhaps this could be a good position for Walter Jones, now that his playing days seem to be pretty much over. OL Coach? Who wouldn’t want to learn from the best?

I’d rather give the money to someone who’s been in the league for a couple years and has shown that he can stand on both feet and create a hole for Forsett to run through.

by Kevin M Smith on Oct 20, 2009 11:33 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

i admit

that we need to address some other issues with the draft.

If Seattle can actually pick in the early rounds again next year we can choose BPA, then having leverage with other teams for trade bait.

Don't count on Walt to be a coach.

Great players rarely make great coaches. They often do so much on instinct and pure talent that the ability to instruct falls short.

This goes across sports lines, not just football. Typically the best coaches are those that didn’t have the best natural ability but survived on wits and technique above and beyond pure god-gifted natural ability.

Now, why would we trade a good veteran for a draft pick? The player’s salary. Or the free agent year player behind him that we don’t want to lose, and the money saved by moving said vet can help keep the player. Maybe because the guy is on his last legs and best to get SOME value for him now instead of simply cutting him in the offseason. It isn’t about what you “get” always, but about getting whatever value you can.

Bird Law in this country isn't governed by reason.

You

Make many good points.

by mrcoffee1969 on Oct 20, 2009 11:49 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Please use the subject line.

You trade an expensive veteran that’s no longer performing at a high level in order to free up salary and cap space, as well as to acquire useful draft picks that can be used to acquire useful and young players.

There’s no indication that Walter Jones wants to be a coach or would be a good one.

Over-reliance and over-valuing players with “proven track records” and have been in the league for years is the Bavasi method for destroying a franchise. Acquire good players through the draft, trades, and free agency keeping in mind that veteranocity isn’t everything.

by BrianL on Oct 20, 2009 11:56 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Seems to have worked out OK for the Pats, Steelers, Colts and pretty much anyone who’s been at the top of the league for the last 10 years. They’ve had some rookie successes as well, but moving veterans in and out seems to have been very valuable to staying on top.

No, it’s not everything, but it’s something.

I also realize Walt may not be a great coach, but then again, he just might be the next great coach. Only one way to find out. Nobody thought Singletary would work out as a Linebacker coach…he’s done fairly fair so far. Besides, I was mostly thinking outloud, who knows what he wants to do.

by Kevin M Smith on Oct 20, 2009 12:11 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Steelers and Colts have always built through the draft

Always. The most important players to the Pats, minus their receivers, have also come from the draft.

by John Morgan on Oct 20, 2009 12:14 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah but not the Pats.

Moss, Welker (hard to minus the WR, they matter to), Chad Brown, Seau, Corey Dillon, Heath Evans, Sammy Morris, Antwan Smith, Rodney Harrison, Springs etc….Colts and Steelers live and die by the draft minus Maddox, the “Bus” and Duce Staley.

I hope people can see the nuanced reason for dumping Kerney.

He is entering a phase of his career where both his health and his performance are hard to predict. He’s very expensive. Seattle is in a rebuilding mode. Not a full collapse, but an audit. Kerney is one of the few assets Seattle has that it can potentially move, and it benefits Seattle by giving the younger players more playing time and freeing money from the cap. The draft pick is gravy.

by John Morgan on Oct 20, 2009 12:21 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

And the young ends they have

Are better players anyway. Kerney keeps eating playing time from Darryl Tapp. Tapp is a better player. And I think LoJack is also a better player at this point, and only going to improve.

Why is it no one ever trades good players for good players in the NFL?

In other sports it happens quite frequently. Are NFL GMs just scared of the risks?

Just too add.

I agree with trading him and the contract, but I also think he’s got some left in the tank, especially if he is used in a John Abraham type role.

If Kerney wants to restructure, he could have a place on this team

but if Kerney okay with being a part time player, playing behind someone else?

by John Morgan on Oct 20, 2009 2:03 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

He does lead the team in sacks, so he probably does feel he should be starting.

However, Seattle does rotate d-lineman enough that he might be okay with it.

by MFAN on Oct 20, 2009 2:06 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Kerney should be starting

but for a team that is looking for a hired gun to push them over the top. Plenty of good teams could add Kerney and upgrade their defense, but Seattle isn’t in one player away mode and Kerney isn’t likely to still be good when and if they get there again.
