Meet Mike Gibson

Birthdate: November 18, 1985

Height/Weight: 6'4"/308

College: California

College Position: LT

Starts and Games: 22 and 26

Notable: Gibson played two seasons at California after transferring from Solano Junior College. Gibson was the starting left tackle for the Bears for most of 2006 and 2007. The 2007 team allowed only 11 sacks, best in the Pac-10 and fourth overall in the nation. Gibson was an honorable all Pac-10, but not considered a great pro prospect.

He was however considered a pro prospect and was invited to the 2008 NFL scouting combine. There he benched 225 pounds 31 times and led all offensive linemen in the three cone drill. That, his build and his reputation as a "nasty" and "technically sound" blocker makes me think a little of Max Unger. Like Brandon Frye, Gibson came to the pros typecast a guard, but does give Seattle some left tackle depth.

The real question and the one not answerable from second hand information and stopwatches is how well does he move? As you might guess, youtube is bereft of Mike Gibson highlights, but here's a familiar face that played beside him: Justin Forsett. Gibson is 53.

Star-divide

And for a sense of his pass blocking:

Gibson strikes me as at least interesting.

So he has quick feet, and is incredibly strong?

I wonder what his weaknesses are? Inability to understand who, when, and what to block? Bad balance?

Poor chess skills

and a tendency to stand too closely to a person when talking.

It is the savior! The prophet! The man who will single-handedly help our O line! Its..

Mike Gibson?

Ok on a serious note, I like this move. It looks like he has the tools to play in a zone blocking scheme and could prove to be valuable depth.

Hmm.
Gibson was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the sixth round of the 2008 NFL Draft. During the 2008 preseason, he sustained a shoulder injury and was placed on injured reserve for the remainder of the year.

Sounds like a perfect match for the Seahawks.

This made me laugh.

Well done, FF.

What is the rule on signing players off another teams practice squad?

I thought the whole point of a practice squad was to protect players…isn’t that why we wait to see if they will clear waivers before placing them on the PS?

I saw a Kelly Jennings INT.......really....

Practice Squad offers no protection.

Any team is free to sign any player off another player’s practice squad.

The caveat, I believe

Is that you have to sign them to your roster.

The demise of the Broncos in '09 is our future. Pray hard.

Yes

and the player has to agree. When a player passes through waivers they cannot refuse being claimed.

Sims had better get and stay healthy. I don't want to see these backups on the field.

I would rather see Gibson than Vallos.

Not offense to Hasselbeck, but I kind of enjoy seeing interesting young line talent play.

just from those two videos

it looks like he could hold his own. I wouldn’t care right now if they put him in against Dallas. McIntosh may be a vet but the CHIEFS let him go. Frye is still hurt yes? Lastly, Williams is on the PS again anyway. Let the kid prove it on the gridiron.

Just tell him to sleep at Matt’s house this whole next week as to get to love that man so he doesn’t get him killed.

Next year can't get here soon enough for me

Just glad Ruskell isn’t mortgaging our future for a lost year. Do what you have to do Ruskell, but look to next year for a true O-line fix. No trades for garbage players that take a draft pick from us.

Here's what I saw.

Run blocking: Not great, but he moves well and gets to his block quickly. He’s not really good at moving a guy out of the way. I saw several of those clips where it looks like he’s standing his defender up, but not moving him away from the play. He’s basically being held at the point of attack. Pulls well, which is probably where the “guard” belief comes from. He has good legs, quick legs. I think he hits defenders too high. Saw him fall down on a couple of those plays. May have just been a bad day.

Pass blocking: He’s pretty good here. In none of those clips did I see him get beat. He can take a speed rusher and give him a nice shove to stymie the attack. Seems to deliver a good strong pop with his arms. Smart enough to take a defender way out of the play. In one of those shots, he loops his defender way around behind the quarterback to the other side of the field. Seems to be good in zone blocking as well. He finds his spot and keeps his feet moving, arms ready for a good push.

Seems to be a real leg guy. Quick and agile, though he doesn’t use the legs to really drive people off the line. He seems to favor trying to bull rush them with his arms, which is not going to do the trick. I saw him off balance a couple of times on run plays and screens. He’ll have to learn to keep his momentum going forward without falling victim to a defender slipping off his tackle.

I like him, but he could use some work. Guard is definitely where he belongs, though he could hold his own on pass blocking as a tackle.

Fans are typically idiots.

C
Another second year man to keep an eye on is Mike Gibson, who was spending time learning both guard and center last year.

The second vid pretty much shows why he wasn't considered to be a tackle prospect.

Decent laying blocks on the move, though.
