Because its never too early- Rang's first 2010 mock
Here it is. Check out that second 1st round pick! Boo ya.
Rang normally has the pulse on Tim Ruskell's drafts. He was probably the only person on earth the called the Tatupu pick. He nailed the Lawrence Jackson pick in 2008. He called the Curry pick two weeks before it happened. He's probably correctly called other Ruskell picks as well. Why do I bring this up? Because its required that this post have 75 words! There we go.
A place to bury strangers.

Rob Rang often gets the Hawks' pick right
but his draft board keeps changing until right before the draft.

He was the first guy I read who had Jason Smith going first of the LT's...
and he had him to the Hawks at 4 before he jumped to 2nd overall. I wonder if we would have taken him if available over Curry?
Also, Rob and I used to sit in the back of 300 and 400 level English/Lit classes at CWU talking Seahawks back in the day when it wasn’t all that fun to talk about the Hawks, so I’ll always like his opinion more than Kiper/McShay.

Doubtful
Seemed like the FO had plenty of faith in either Jones coming back from surgery or Locklear successfully replacing him.

It wasn't really a comment on Rang's relative effectiveness
its more about the futility of October draft boards. Grain of salt and all that.

I don't think we take Mays if Locker declares.
Especially if Mora is still the head coach next year. I’m sure he will want the QB of the future from his Alma mater.

Hey, I called Aaron Curry when we still had Peterson, so... yeah.
I saw us taking Mays and though, hm… I’m fine with that, and his explanation is good as well. A big guy like that head hunting over the middle might make Fitz, Boldin, and Crabtree leery. However, 3 of the next 4 picks are Locker, Clausen, and Okung, and all three are very intriguing. If we pass on Locker, I just hope it doesn’t turn into a Tim Lincecum situation.
I like the Charles Brown pick as well.
by LantermanC on Oct 27, 2009 9:20 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I don't see the justification of Mays when both Locker and Clausen are on the board (assuming they both declare)
The Spiller pick makes sense somewhat for the Niners. But that just sucks for us.

No offense to Rang
but I don’t remember him nailing much. I remember Kentwan Balmer. I would guess if you put out dozens of mock drafts, they will match up to reality eventually, but he’s had a lot of strong feelings about players Ruskell would never select.
by John Morgan on Oct 27, 2009 11:51 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
And just doing preliminary research for this comment
I can list Jason Smith and Darius Heyward-Bey as two names that popped up right away that were pretty out there.

Speaking of Balmer.
He still hasn’t recorded a sack in the NFL and has a total 14 tackles.
by MFAN on Oct 27, 2009 3:16 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
How was Jason Smith "out there" when he ended up going 2 spots above us?
I think it is just as likely as not that he would have drafted him at 4 instead of Curry if they were both there.
(I’m not disagreeing with the analysis that mock draft experts in general, not just Rang, don’t nail much, they’re always off a bit.)
Bird Law in this country isn't governed by reason.

Smith didn't fit what Ruskell does.
It’s not out there based on value, though Rang said Smith would be Ryan Clady right away and…, it’s out there based on Ruskell’s methods.
by John Morgan on Oct 27, 2009 1:37 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Fair enough.
This reminds me of when I argued with one of the “pro-Holmgren GM” crowd about his two greatest successes, Shaun and in particular Hutch being likely Ruskell picks as well given the same circumstances.
We can’t really prove it, but I am pretty damn sure I was right then, and you are probably right now, but we’ll never definitively know. And for the record, I do love the Curry pick. I just wish we had a better OLine TODAY as well.

I have to step out, so I want to put this out there
I have a lot of respect for Rang and his NFL Draft Scout site has become the premiere source for prospect info. I wasn’t trying to rip him with my above comments, but I’ve read the Rang knows the Seahawks picks nugget bandied around here and elsewhere, and I do not remember that being the case. I especially do not think that this early in the process, a mock draft can be even remotely accurate enough to be meaningful.
by John Morgan on Oct 27, 2009 3:52 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I think he's pretty accurate with his final drafts
but the picks change a lot before he settles on the last one. Mock drafts are a crap shoot in general and October mock drafts don’t often resemble draft day picks. I think its also pretty probable that Ruskell has no more idea of who he’ll draft first than a list of a dozen guys he’s keeping his eye on.

Nope, honestly I think its a joke that Mock drafts are out this early
I was trying to be obvious in the sarcasm of my title. I posted it for laughs. As inaccurate as its sure to be, its fun to see what people think now compared to 6 months from now.
As far as Rang’s accuracy, I think you misunderstand. Rang has said that during the months leading up to the actual draft, he’ll often start plugging in other players in his projections so that readers will have an idea of who is on the radar. For example, last year, he had a lot of projections with Smith, Crabtree, and Sanchez. Its kind of funny that, when he projected Sanchez at #4, almost every other pundit got on the Sanchez to Seattle bandwagon within a week! Rang stayed with Sanchez for I think 9 weeks before officially picking Curry two weeks out.
Its possible that Balmer was never on Ruskell’s radar, but Balmer was just a name Rang threw out leading up to the draft, as he typically does. IIRC, Lawrence Jackson was the prediction, not Balmer, in Rang’s final 2008 mock.

Mocks are just fun, not much else.
They provide good discussion during the Bye, and they give you hope when the team is down. I find that if one does not take them seriously, they became way more fun. I’m sure there is a good example of that in pop. culture, but it’s too early for me to think of anything. Pro Wrestling? Olympic Figure Skating?

I'm going to admit that I don't watch college football, nor do I know anything about college players
but I caught part of the Virginia Tech-Georgia Tech game a couple of weeks ago. Did anybody else see Tyrod Taylor’s hail-mary into the endzone at the end of the first half? No joke, the guy threw the ball 70 yards in the air, and it didn’t have too much loft to it. It looked like a regular deep ball.
Unbelievable arm strength.
