Louis Rankin activated

With Big Walt being placed on IR, it's interesting to see Rankin activated as opposed to securing more O-line depth. In the short-term Mora has said that Rankin could help out as a kick returner, but is there any chance he could end up offering a new dimension to a lacklustre running game? I'm not saying he can turn it all around, but at 6'1 with good speed it's hard not to be a little optimistic. The Edge experiment has been far from succesful, so as the line gets healthier with Lock and Sims returning, surely it couldn't hurt to give Rankin a few carries and see what we have with him?

Edge IS O-line help.

One of the biggest reasons we have him is his blocking skill in pass protection.

I haven't actually noticed us, you know, actually using Edge in blitz pick-up that often.

Why Justin Forsett is out there attempting to block on 3rd downs is confusing.

Edge gets about a series per half, give or take

Forsett isn’t a horrible pass-blocker, but what he lacks in that area, he makes up for in explosiveness. He’s a great pass-catching back and has ripped off some nice runs on screens.

I like Forsett, don't get me wrong.

But in some obvious passing third-downs I’d much rather see Edge back there instead of watching Forsett either whiff on the block or get bulled backwards.

You're right. Fixed.

Supposedly one of the biggest reasons we have him is his blocking skill in pass protection.

Watch him closely on sunday, his pass blocking is up to par for sure

he is definitely capable of taking a big rushing guy and take out his legs. He can also chip pretty good.

Nobody is denying Edge's skill in pass-protection.

i'm not saying they are.

I just don’t justify putting Edge back there to spell Forsett when Forsett is fully capable of protecting the QB in pass pro.

I just don’t see the need for Edge and never understood why they picked him up in the first place. Same thing with Lawyer Milloy too.

"when Forsett is fully capable of protecting the QB in pass pro."

No, not really. Definitely not to the extent that Edge or Jones can, at least.

your trippin

Forsett does just as well as both Jones and Edge.

There’s nothing a RB can do to block a gap blitz like what was happening on sunday at Dallas.

Jones is competent in pass pro though

And Forsett’s been steadily improving on it. I see your point but we have decent blocking backs as is, so someone with a bit more explosion back there would be preferable

Edge is Old-line help

This guy doesn’t even play often enough to make an impact with his pass-blocking skills.

If I was the head coach, I would tell the O-line this.

I will impose a team fine of $5000 to any offensive lineman that allows a sack.

Make these guys play for their money. I mean it. I would be so hell bent and whiskey bound to kick the crap out of the o-line. That’s probably why I am not the head coach.

You realize the majority of NFL contracts are not guaranteed, right?

They already play for their money, unlike NBA and MLB players who get every penny of every contract they sign.

No, fact of the matter is they’re trying. However, you can’t take a jackass to the derby, you can’t make chicken salad out of chicken shit, and if you think a 4th string LT and try to use him to block DeMarcus Ware, well, then Matty better watch his backside.

This is also illegal, if memory serves

Didn’t the wide receivers do a pool for a while that said any drop meant a fine within the position group until the player’s association caught wind? Different situation, but I thought the principle of the matter was that the PA wouldn’t allow performance-based pay or penalties unless explicitly laid out in a contract. Retroactively deciding that your contract is based on performance incentives probably wouldn’t fly.

Plus, wouldn’t you fake an ankle injury if you were McIntosh?

Yes, yes yes!

Now release that has-been “edge.” He’s dead weight.

he looked pretty good against us in the preseason.

He’s worth a shot, especially if it means getting rid of trash like edgerrin james.

I actually don't think he is better then James.

He is just fast. Could be a great Kick Returner though.

In regards to "Rankin activated as opposed to securing more O-line depth"

I thought the same thing at first, but I was listening to the radio and they pointed out that with all the recent roster moves up to Jones being put on the IR, we actually have 9 O-linemen on the roster, 8 of them healthy enough to play if you exclude Locklear who should be ready next week, and 2 more on the practice squad. 9 O-linemen is pretty standard.

Although 4 RB’s on top of 2 fullbacks is a lot of people in the backfield, I think if we didn’t add a RB, the extra roster spot would go somewhere else before the O-line, because who is really left out there for us to grab? We’ve already grabbed two offcast in Frye (IR now), McIntosh, and Gibson from the Eagles practice squad. If Rankin can return kicks, it seems like this could end up being a good move for us.

His accent here reminds me of Bobcat in Police Academy.

Believe it or not, that’s a good thing in my book.
