On Field Gulls and Politics
This has not been a major problem here, but since something erupted in a game thread last weekend, I think I should lay out my opinion on the matter.
I hope Field Gulls, if no other internet community apparently, can be respectful about each others' political differences, understand that people do not come here to talk politics and therefore politics should not be brought into the discussion, without ignoring the world exists. I mention things that can be discussed politically, but I never do--in fact, I am pretty sure no one here has any idea about my political leanings.
For instance, Barack Obama is the president of the United States. His is a political office, but recognizing his office has no innate political significance. It's a fact. Further, I might joke sometimes using other political tropes, like riffing on America's inferiority regarding XYZ. If instead I wrote, "boy, the US sucks at soccer," it wouldn't be political, but it would also be stupid and bland. It could be political, but then it would be pointlessly controversial.
Likewise, almost anything can be politicized. The Seahawks exist in a political sphere and are influenced by taxes, property law, public transportation, etc. But I never post about Seahawks politics, because that is not the subject of this blog. The blog needs to exist in the modern world, and to do that, I am not going to saturate it with pop culture references and dead "memes". Sometimes that means pointing out that Disney put lemmings on turntables and flung them into the sea. Nothing political there, but it could be. So if another poster or I brought up animal rights, BOOM, the sites goes to hell.
The incident in question happened after I said Obama was unwittingly featured in a Hyundai ad. It was a passing observation that only incidentally involved a major political figure. I know, or at least I think I know, Obama did not agree to have his face shown in the ad. Instead, Hyundai, rather treacherously, showed its web page and that web page had a teaser link on it about Obama. He became an unwitting spokesperson for the company, just as any other prominent, political or non-political figure who was on that page would have.
Then, as I understand it, someone said something pro-Obama. I think it goes without saying that is political and not the subject of this site. A mod stepped in and stopped the conversation from going down a bad path, but the original commenter felt slighted. The person thought, among other things, I was knocking Obama.
It didn't end up being a big deal. I think this kind of stuff will happen from time to time. I want this community to not be afraid of each other. That means talking crap sometimes, and trusting each other and not making the world outside the Seattle Seahawks off-limits for discussion. I hope this clarifies the matter, and I hope people comment and we can talk about this. I want Field Gulls to be equitable. I want Field Gulls to be safe. But I need Field Gulls to be relevant, and that isn't Kanye West photoshops and Family Guy references.
A place to bury strangers.

I'm glad you keep the politics clear
No one can shut up about politics once a comment is made. And then every mad idea in someone’s head regarding politics starts flowing out like vomit stinking the whole place up.
Glad it’s not allowed here.

The Simpsons was a model of creative and even intelligent comedy for a decade +.

Hold up here...
there’s a solid market for gimmick humor, something to be enjoyed about pop culture references, and most importantly, not enough solid esoteric abstraction out there.
Family Guy is NOT a fad. It is a show that can always continue to keep giving, as long as there is pop culture available to reference… last I checked, pop culture continues to shock and amaze, so the well still has solid springwater bubbling.
That being said, Simpsons is the standard bearer, and you can make a debate is one of the greatest SHOWS ever, period— not simply animated. Of course, the fact that the characters are cartoons means they don’t age, the actors don’t get tired and want to flex in other areas or worry about getting typecast, and it is simply a creative genius that found the perfect niche.

Family Guy a collage of gimmick humor, pop culture, and esoteric abstraction
That may be but guess what. Family Guy is still the only show ever to be canceled and then brought back by popular demand.
Simpsons was funny when Conan O’Brien was a writer. Now the Simpsons just suck.
family Guy and SouthPark are still the leaders of the comedic cartoons hands down.
They both pull no punches with their jokes and both spare no culture, religion, race, creed, sexual preference etc from their esoteric abstractions…

Conan was a writer for a brief time
His later prominence makes people overestimate his significance. Much as most people overestimate Matt Groening’s significance. I’m not sure you can pin the show on any one person, but I would put Sam Simon, Jame L. Brooks, John Swartzwelder, Brad Bird and even maybe the voice actors ahead of him. Read Life in Hell and you see, talented as he is, Groening was lucky like most everyone else to be a part of something that grew way beyond any one person.

He was only there for a brief time, but Conan is responsible for my favorite episode of the Simpsons ever
Marge vs. The Monorail
As for Matt, he seemed to luck into a great supporting group with Futurama as well. David X. Cohen and the vocal staff were huge for that series.

See
I’ve listened to many of the commentaries, so I know maybe too much about this stuff. Conan was the first writer the series added, he was kind of an unknown then and I think a couple of show runners took a chance on him because of SNL connections. He pitched “New Kid on the Block” and “Homer goes to College” (an episode I am not crazy about) but was discouraged from pitching Monorail, because it was too far fetched. He did anyway and Brooks liked it.
He wasn’t with the show long. You can tell he was super well liked by everyone, but he took over Late Night in 93. So his run is like 91-93.

Family Guy has two main problems
1). The individual jokes have an insanely high “hit or miss” factor. There’s very little inbetween appreciation. It’s either really fucking funny or fucking stupid.
2). Jokes that run too damn long. Usually the non sequitur gags and things like Peter grabbing his knee and seething in pain for five damn minutes.
Also, the character evolution has been anything but appropriate. Brian has gone from general “striaght man” to pretentious liberal. Lois has gone from generally conservative housewive “straight woman” to borderline white trash. Stewie has gone from mad scientist with matricidal tendencies to gay reactionist. Chris has remained mostly the same and Meg went from fairly normal teenage girl with issues to hated by the family teenage psycho. Meanwhile, continuity? What continuity?
I liken FG with Robot Chicken; there’s about 5 minutes worth of funny and 10 to 20 minutes of pain.
Fans are typically idiots.

Ya gotta admit.
The guy does an angry rant really well, though it’s a really annoying gimmick after a while. Kind of like Sam Kinison, whom I loved, screaming all the time. It’s funny when it’s in proper moderation, but overdone it just gets irritating.

No, it's great.
Because there simply aren’t enough angry people out there getting air time, and there is waaaaay too much blah.
Look at it this way— we all know (and hear, even if we would care not to) Jay Leno far more than Leary or Kinison (RIP).
That just seems wrong to me.

He can blow me, its been a great truck
But, a decade PLUS ago, he was doing the angry thing with aplomb. A decade is a long time, man. Hell, a decade ago I would have never sold out for ANYTHING. Now, if you paid me enough, I’d do just about anything and not think twice about it. I had passions and ideals.
Now? I don’t even CARE about politics anymore. Neither side. And I’m not nearly so idealistic, nor so passionate. And even though I drive and love my Chevy, if someone paid me to say good things about Ford, I’d say, “Sign me up!”
Life sucks, wear a fuckin’ helmet. (That was a Leary line when I heard it, but if it came from someone else, so be it. Still fucking funny!)

To bring up Phildopip's point
Should we not allow “+1” as a comment – Just like we don’t allow people to say “1st”
And adopt the method of saying “Rec – Then giving a reason why you rec it”
Rec or +1 - Not allowed
Rec because John Morgan loves Mcdonalds – Allowed

"First"
doesn’t add anything to the conversation. “+1” is shorthand for “rec” which doesn’t seem to have any negative connotations.

This I agree with
I think “+1” and “rec” is like a reply button violation. It usually just means someone is new and not used to the interface. It’s not worth banning, but a reminder to hit the recommend button instead of typing “+1” makes sense to me.
Honestly, I don’t understand why people can’t write out “I agree” or “that’s funny” or “my dog suffered testicular cancer too!” But if you can’t, that is what the rec button is for, I guess.

John Morgan and BrianL
I am the guy that got pissed off at you two let me give you the other side of the story.
First John says Obama endorses Hyundai which is a bit different than you have in the opening post here, I felt that’s out of line I made a counter comment why did I feel that was out of line ?
Because of the auto worker situation in the U.S. whatever I gave my two cents back to football right ?
No someone deletes my post and that of other member but John’s post is still there I post again pretty much saying fuck that either the rule is for everyone or kick me out.
" Then, as I understand it, someone said something pro-Obama. I think it goes without saying that is political and not the subject of this site. A mod stepped in and stopped the conversation from going down a bad path, but the original commenter felt slighted. The person thought, among other things, I was knocking Obama. "
I don’t know how you can sit there with a strait face and claim saying Obama endorses a foreign car maker is not political either you are trying to pull one over on us John or you just really don’t know what’s going on outside the sports world.
BrianL tells me " stop " I tell him no I’m not going to stop do whatever you want this is bull shit, then BrianL gives me a warning that says stop I click okay so I can be logged in to play by the rules and then I proceed to tell John and Brian to go to hell.
Now here is how I feel either everyone plays by the same rule no politics that’s fine I don’t come to sports sites to here political views or we just ignore that rule like in baseball when a middle infielder is in the " neighbor hood " and it’s ruled an out,
what is good for the goose is good for the gander.
I felt then and now that it was hypercritical for anyone to have a post deleted after John opened that can of worms while leaving his post there, now John and Brian can take their ball and go home if they want on this and ban me warm me kick me out whatever I don’t really care.
I will still read for Seahawks news regardless getting to post on here does not really make much difference or they can man up and say hey we were wrong my bad and I’ll stay, no matter how I feel about how the board is ran I give John props for keeping Hawks fans informed no taking that away from him.
I understand no one here probably gives two shits whether I am a member or not but if we have rules here or anywhere else in life I’ll call them on anyone John, The Pope or Jim Mora Jr anybody that’s how I am.
Also when I told John and Brian to go to hell John just says well Postcard is one word not two, if you feel the way you claim to do in your original post then you could have cleared the matter at the time and just deleted your post and we could have moved on.
Now all that being said I will give John and Brian a bit of credit for not snap banning my account right then or now as I’ll say that shows some good restraint on their part at least allowing a different viewpoint the option of posting their view.
Where it goes from here I don’t know but that’s the other side of the coin go ahead and flame me if you want.

Here's the deal
When a moderator of any blog/site/forum tells you to stop, you stop. You do not have free reign to post whatever you damn well feel like after you’ve been issued a warning. Our job is to keep things civil here. If you have a problem with that, you can e-mail us privately instead of posting long rants telling said moderators to go to hell.
If you want to tell us to go to hell, please do so via e-mail (conveniently located at the bottom of the page) and not in the comment section itself. Posting that in the comment section is considered off-topic and rude to the moderators and the other FG users.
Have a nice day.

I'm going to ballpark this
You think someone has done you wrong, and it is very unlikely anything I say or anyone else says will change your opinion. That sucks that you feel that way, but I don’t think I can resolve it.
So how about we just let it drop and move on? This is a misunderstanding. If you don’t believe me about anything else, please believe me about that. This entire problem is two people mis-communicating.
by John Morgan on Oct 9, 2009 5:32 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
John
I’m cool with that if you are, as for Brian and his stop thing I don’t really care enough about a membership on a free blog to stop if I think I’m right about a matter I will speak my mind.
That said I respect what you guys do and I don’t need to tell people to burn I got a bit worked up sorry if I offended you or anyone else.
As for political posts I won’t go there unless it’s brought up by staff if I see someone else bring it up I’ll just report it because I believe doesn’t belong here.

Not necessarily...
I believe what’s important to one person, doesn’t need to be important to everybody to be a valid issue.
I also believe that both moderating a forum, and participating in that same forum, is not an easy task at times. After being metaphorically “pimp-slapped” by BrianL for calling this place a “forum” last year, I decided to study-up blog architecture (I promise I’ll never call a comment a post again). I designed, and have been running my own blog (non-football) for about 6 months now as a mod, and participant. I’m only getting about 900 comments per day at this point (far less than this site I’m sure), but can assure you that the time investment can be very prohibitive to self moderation.
That having been said, John does a pretty good job here of letting water flow under the bridge. I have never sensed a super-ego from his having the “GOD CONTROLS” at his disposal.
The one thing I have learned, is that when 2 people agree to disagree, apologize for any misunderstandings, and move on… in a strange way, it seems to build a better relationship for having waged the war and lived to tell about it.
For what its worth…
PS: John what plugin gives you the “new” comment functionality. I assume the plugin works off a cookie, but I can’t think of the proper query to search for it.
