Seahawks Fall Hard - Bitch Thread
Looks like we've experienced a bit of a chilling effect. That sucks. I will have to see who was banned.
I am going to speak to the pessimists out there or the self-titled realists others might think are pessimistic: Seattle is not a good team. It took the field today a 2-4 team, playing on the road against an NFC East contender. Some things broke Seattle's way, but most things did not. The Seahawks are looking at their second losing season in two years and, depending on how things break, another top ten pick.
When I was researching Walter Jones, I read a lot about Seattle's 1997 draft class. I reflected on how bad Seattle had been to get Walter Jones, Joey Galloway and Shawn Springs. I have defended Tim Ruskell, but not exclusively. I agree with many of the decisions he makes and yet Seattle is still bad. That isn't paradoxical. Seattle has very little talent from the pre-Ruskell era, and most of the talent Ruskell purged is out of the NFL or benched.
I may not always be the best at enforcing or tolerating it, but I do like dissent. I do not however like reflexive anger and head hunting. Criticism should be directed, specific and provide meaningful alternatives. If you think dissent is not tolerated, I challenge you to think through your criticism. The mods who run the threads are purely volunteer. If you are frustrated, angry and want somewhere to point fingers or yell "fuck you" in a crowded room, Field Gulls is not the place. A volunteer job should not be hard, should not ruin watching football, and that's why I stand behind my mods. If you have a complaint about how Field Gulls is run, I invite you to email me.
If you are invested in this team, miserable seeing them get blown out again, and want to offer meaningful criticism, this is a bitch thread. If you can't tolerate your football team losing two seasons in a row and want to pick fights, throw bombs or find scapegoats, Field Gulls is not the place for you. That's not what we do.

I think that reflects the coaches
and the youth and lack of cohesion on this defense. The Seahawks were very sloppy today and I hope that works out with experience. Sloppy is expected when a team is making major shifts in coaching. Frustrating nonetheless.
What do you think about Bruce DeHaven, John?

Agreed.
DeHaven needs to be fired. Not at the end of the season. TODAY.
Despite having Mare kicking into the zone as often as not, our kickoff coverage is so bad, teams still run it out from 4 yard deep, and still get past the 20 more often than not. Something is just off there, and I don’t know what it is, but even if it is only a superficial move, firing the coach in charge of that mess makes sense to me.

Not too sure...
Well, OK – I’m fine with it.
But my overall feeling with special teams – especially coverage units – is that they are made up of (mostly youth) stud depth RBs, DBs, and LBs. And since we’ve ignored drafting RBs (despite the fact that it’s the most important position to have 1st day, 1st contract players) and have only gone for micro-DBs, it’s no wonder our ST can’t cover and can’t block.
I don’t think it’s all coaching.

I didn't catch much of the game, but I saw Forsett field a punt inside the 5.
It’s not fair to blame that on coaching without knowing what was running through Forsett’s head, but it is fair to say that special teams play has not been good. I wouldn’t mind a change at ST coach.
That one was sloppy decisionmaking
but on a few punts I seem to recall Nate just kind of stutter-stepping and hesitating for a few seconds before finally taking a step forward (and getting clobbered by the coverage unit)
When would you EVER return a punt thats gonna land inside your own 5?

I'm getting tired of losing all these fumbles
Not to mention those 3 asinine PI calls.
John, what was the WPA swing on those pass interference calls?

I thought at least one was not a bad call...
one was mediocre at best, and one was simply terrible. But I don’t think all 3 were “asinine.”

Judgment call, obviously
I thought if anything the first was a hold, but on replay the ref looked to react more to what he thought he saw than the actual contact. On the second, it’s probably the most blatant in terms of PI, and the third was simply uncatchable, as Williams had turned inside and Romo threw the fade.
I’m probably more frustrated that pretty much every 50-50 call went against us than anything.

Not the least because we don't have the players for it
But regardless, there’s no reason why Aaron Curry should be covering Miles Austin because he’s running a cross through his zone, or how Jason Witten should be so wide open.

Works better if you're getting any pressure at all.
But the ’boys were blocking very well.
So now we're blaming special teams and zone defense?

I'm tired of seeing Edge on the field
JJ was running hard today to the tune of a high ankle sprain sustained in garbage time. No more screens with him.
Just have Forsett, Rankin, and Jones be your RBs.
Broncos 12 Bengals 7: The story of the 2009 Seattle Seahawks.
Amen
Forsett has shown to be a willing blocker. Not sure the block he missed against Dallas was entirely his fault. Rankin at least could help our special teams. Edge seems like a nice guy. Seattle has enough nice guys. Ugh, 2M for a bit player. Ugh.
It is what it is...
I feel Mora is terrible with coach's challenges
I posit this may be from observing Holmgren’s stinginess with gambling time-outs for calls that could likely be overturned. In an effort to not be like that, Mora is tossing the red, and tossing it often. I have watched every 2009 Seahawks game so far sans the Arizona game. I have not seen a successful challenge.
Is this what will be Mora’s “weakness?” Over-careful conservatism with Holmgren, and now over-eager use of the challenge flag, costing precious time-outs?
I don’t have anything productive to add, so I throw this idea in the bitch thread.
How can you think that that was a clear catch at first?
Mora has made some bad challenges but this was a good decision even though the play stood.
Broncos 12 Bengals 7: The story of the 2009 Seattle Seahawks.
I have a really hard time believing the official that came from far away to overrule saw it correctly...
And even though it was overturned, I wonder if it would have been had the call on the field not been reversed.
Seems we’re always on the ass-end of what qualifies as “irrefutable evidence.”

Mora can watch the replay on that quarter-billion-dollar jumbotron like everyone else.
Feet were clearly in and even through the sound of Buffalo Wild Wings, it sounded like Dallas fans in attendance were cheering it as the replay showed it.

I remember the same.
That probably had much impact on his tendency to be far more cautious than other coaches in challenging plays.

True, but I meant even below the (already low) league average.
Can’t find any evidence to back up my memory though….
Can Hasselbeck look for Carlson more often?
Broncos 12 Bengals 7: The story of the 2009 Seattle Seahawks.
I seriously doubt that Matt is ignoring Carlson
When Carlson isn’t being kept in blitz protection, and when he gets open, he gets targeted.
I'm curious to find out who they will blame for this
It was a pretty complete collapse so I’m guessing Ruskell with increasing anger at Mora.
Well, there you go!
We need to get rid of them and find some better opponents.
And you know what? The Lions seem made to order.
The offensive line gave me hope today
I didn’t see any pressure coming from the inside(Sims back, Spencer, and Unger). Depending on signing Spencer that is a core that could be around for the next 3-4 years and seems able to get better. They are all pretty young. Left Tackle is missing Locklear and Ray Willis got beat in pass pro, to be expected. We looked decent in the running game all day against a talented defense, on the road.
My biggest fear is that Ruskell is not spending enough resources on the defensive line. Cole has been crap so far, Kerney is not bringing consistent enough pressure. Replace those two and I think we’ve got something. We certainly have enough resources invested in other parts of the defense that we should be better, we are simply lacking in the most important parts.
Do we know what the details are on Cole's Contract?
I know it is 5 -21 Million and 5 guaranteed, but how much of the guaranteed is for the first year?
That's not the way guaranteed money works...
Guaranteed is guaranteed. If Cole were to play the life of his contract to its completion, then the entire amount is equally amortized across the span.
Should Cole be cut in any year… the amount paid towards the guarantee would be subtracted from the total and the balance would be accelerated immediately. Note: There is a way to defer the accelerated amount one year, and it revolves around the timeframe the player is cut. I believe the June 1st cut deadline is that demarkation line.
Bring Your Game, Leave Your Name.
So in Coles case...
He has already been paid 5 million dollars; however, the Seahawks are allowed to count just 1 million of that guarantee toward his cap number for each of the 5 years he signed for.
Bring Your Game, Leave Your Name.
I would mention that it is a teams discretion to accelerate it all themselves....
As the Hawks did with Anthony Simmons awhile back. The reason being that they had spare room in the current year to absorb the hit, but were worried about the following year.
Bring Your Game, Leave Your Name.
There was a blitz by Brooking where he was untouched...
it was really strange, he was up on the line and we double teamed the DT and didn’t block him at all. I wondered if that was a communication thing, or what?
Bird Law in this country isn't governed by reason.
by Tyler Jorgensen on Nov 1, 2009 11:15 PM PST up reply actions
most likely a communication problem.
it is the center’s job to pick up blitzes like that if not pick it up either by calling out the protection needed or by physically picking up the blitz.
I ROCK out with my HAWK out, therefore I am....
I thought Unger was at fault.
Spenser was locked to the left, Unger doubled to the right. I’m more than willing to grant that it should have been communicated by the center, but I don’t believe it was his blocking assignment.
Bird Law in this country isn't governed by reason.
by Tyler Jorgensen on Nov 2, 2009 11:02 AM PST up reply actions
I'm maybe missing something here
but it is the center’s job to call out the protections. whether it was his job or not, I suspect the coverage was not called. At some point we will need to see Spencer for what he is, not what he could be.
It is what it is...
the blame is on spencer
Unger was matched up in his original block called out by the protection package at the line of scrimmage. Spencer was supposed to Audible the protection to pick up the blitz.
Spencer was locked to the right on that blitz and should have picked it up left. The LE of Dallas was locked up with Willis at RT and Unger was locked up on the LOLB of Dallas, so you see it was clearly Spencers pick up.
I ROCK out with my HAWK out, therefore I am....
Come again.
The blitzer came between Spenser and Unger. How was Spenser locked to the right? And how was a RG locked in with the LOLB?
Review that one again. You may be right that it was Spenser’s fault, but he went left, not right, and Unger went right instead of to the guy directly in front of him.

Since we're bitching, I'll pile on.
The best defenses succeed by creating pressure. Whether that’s a 3-4 like the Steelers using their linebackers to wreak havoc or the 4-3 of the Eagles, pressure is pressure. Moving forward, I want to see the Seahawks GM and coaching staff show the understanding that both lines are vital to success. That means sitting Kerney in favor of the superior Tapp, fixing the Cole hole, and continuing to add disruptive players at end.
Yeah, don't think he did much when he was in.
But Tapp and Jackson did start and I think Redding started at DT, so maybe the coaching staff is realizing that Kerney’s role should be limited and that Cole is not that good.
Terrill was also inactive and Bryant played a lot, thought that was interesting.
SEA!
I thought that was just cuz he was injured?

Seems like the point to bitch came weeks ago.
Today we were simply watching the ending credits of the season.
That and today was kind of a good day. As far as the game- McIntosh was better than I thought he’d be, and could be a useful future backup. Hasselbeck played well. Julius Jones played well. The WR played well. Really the entire team was right in this game for most of the first two quarters. Its just a shame Dallas caught a shitload of breaks and then used them to put the game away like good teams at home tend to do.
The Seahawks weren’t going anywhere this season, and as much as it sucks to lose- it helps their draft stock, which they may end up needing every bit of as they are in the zone for a franchise QB. Denver also lost, which could help Seattle’s draft stock. A win would have been nice, but this is about as good a way to lose as I can think of, assuming Ken Lucas ends up ok.
I hate that Seattle does a poor job of adjusting during the game
Aside from the Rams and Jaguars, we have shown an inability to counter the other teams adjustments. Nor have we shown the ability to make adjustments offensively to catch our opponent off guard in the 3rd/4th quarters.
Couple that with some iffy leadership skills, and I’m nonplussed right now with Seattle’s head honchos. Prove me wrong boys!
It is what it is...
I'm tired of broken tackles.
And I hate the fact that our RBs can’t break tackles.
The demise of the Broncos in '09 is our future. Pray hard.
Agreed. It seems like our RBs dont' break a lot of tackles.
They elude tackles with Forsett’s swift feet, JJ’s spin move, and Edge’s… uh… slow feet, but it doesn’t seem like they stiff arm or just bounce a tackle off very often.
But
Lucas had a great one on Curry. Does that count?
