Former Chiefs guard Brian De La Puente is also being cut from the PS, probably to make room for Hass.

Mike Hass is being cut from the 53-man roster, Derek Walker will be added to it

If you don’t know how these guys are, you weren’t watching enough preseason football. Hass will probably be moved back to the practice squads at the expense of an offensive guard named Brian De La Puente.

There’s a suggestion in the comments on the TNT story that this is a move for 2010. Crappy teams might just start picking developmental players out of practice squads. Teams can sign players off of other teams’ PS but not their active rosters. This move prevents teams from stealing away Walker (who looked good in preseason and will be our 3-4 DE of the future – j/k).

Thanks, seems like that makes sense Ninjasocks.

Does this mean Terrill might get cut at some point soon?

by Joshua Kasparek on Nov 10, 2009 6:36 PM PST reply actions

Maybe at the end of the year, if Walker sticks

We can only hope.

Didn't walker play most of his time as 3-tech in Preseason?

I still Wish Mebane could play at nose again but I don’t think we have enough 3-tech talent or even DT talent in general. Ever Since tubbs, this team hasn’t had consistency from both positions for an entire game. CT probably isn’t cut this season, but his time on the field may be coming to an end.

I am a bad fan, I didn't know Hass was on the 53-man

So I am understandably not upset to see him be cut from it

by Gihyou on Nov 10, 2009 9:34 PM PST reply actions

He was put on the 53-man last week

I think it would be wierd for them to make this particular move

Considering how horrible our pass rush was up the middle against the Cards at home. I would be shocked if we didn’t see him in for maybe a few plays, but I am wondering if they might use him at D-end instead of 3-tech and move Redding inside on some passing downs.

by Joshua Kasparek on Nov 10, 2009 9:43 PM PST up reply actions

Nope.

Walker won’t be playing at all. With Cole, Mebane, Tapp, Kerney, Jackson, Redding, Bryant, and Terrill… thats 8 guys for 4 spots.

Walker is being brought up to protect him from being signed by other teams. Although our D-Line is deep and talented, Kerney, Tapp, and Redding are all probably gone after the season so we need to hang on to a prospect there.

I really think we keep Tapp.

You forgot Reed

He’s played some snaps for us in the regular season.

Reed is a rotational guy at best

he has a good motor but he is not a starter. we need starting caliber players on this team. We have way too many rotational guys.

We tend to rotate our DEs

You leave them in too long and they’re going to tire out and become less effective.

horse pucky

Dwight Freeney doesn’t get subbed out on a regular basis.

We don’t have a dynamic DE anymore. Kerney became a dinosaur over night.

Dwight Freeney isn't a Seahawk

The Seahawks rotate their DEs.

Here's a chart of the number of snaps each player played last week

http://sea.scout.com/2/917851.html

Tapp played 39/65 snaps (60%), LoJack played 38/65 (58.5%), Kerney played 49/64 (75.4%), Reed played 7/65 (10.8%)

Cole played 30/65 snaps (46.2%), Redding played 20/64 (30.8%), Terrill played 31/65 (47.7%) and Mebane played 46/65 (70.8%).

The only guys that played 100% of the snaps were Hawthorne, Trufant, Wilson, Grant and Babs.

I don't know where I'd find one

He has been playing a reduced number of snaps, though.

Only this year because he has had hip and knee problems.

previous years he was an every down DE with a motor.

Hell put Nick Reed in for every down, he has a motor that won’t quit. A lot like freeney without the strengh. I guess that can be built though.

by durteehawk on Nov 11, 2009 12:19 PM PST up reply actions

Freeney played every down? I don't see that.

You put Nick Reed in there and he’lll get worn down by bigger OL and lose his speed. You need to give him rest or he’ll slow down later in the game and lose any advantage.

If your solution to not having a Dwight Freeney on our team is to play Nick Reed for 100% of the snaps, I’m glad you’re not coaching our team.

by ninjasocks on Nov 11, 2009 12:25 PM PST up reply actions

that's not my solution at all

Having Reed is just an example of a motor that won’t quite.

Is it really that hard to think that a DE could play every snap?

Indy’s defense isn’t on the field as much as ours so they don’t need to sub someone in for Freeney too often. This is just not the case with Seattle’s defense. IF the defense is on the field, say 30% (as it seems with the hawks) then of course you will have to rotate your personnel.

likely,

they were. I re-watched the game twice.

I know dwight Freeney isn't a Seahawk

your missing my point. I don’t see the need to rotate guys in and out if it isn’t getting the job done.

It almost seems as if they have the “rotate mediocrity and the level of play never drops off” but that level of play is never really high like it would be with a stud DE like Freeney.

Things like this piss me off. You don’t need to tell me that Freeney isn’t a Seahawk. I was trying to make a point.

"What is it about good sex that makes me have to crap?"

by durteehawk on Nov 11, 2009 11:58 AM PST up reply actions

Your point was irrelevant

Our defense isn’t the Colt’s defense (even if they’re both based loosely on the Tampa-2). We don’t have Freeney or Dumervil or Allen and we’re just going to have to live with it.

What we are trying to do is rotate our DEs to keep them fresh. I know that you want some super-powered DE that racks up 10 sacks a game and never needs a breather, but you can’t just go out and pick those guys off the street.

I think that came off a little harsh. I apologize for that.

My point is that our defense is different from the Indy defense and we’re not trying to duplicate them. Our coaches see value in being able to keep rotating fresh, effective DEs (like the 2008 Giants).

Reed will probably get more snaps as time goes on, but we can’t keep him in there all the time. He’s got to be a liability against the rush and he’ll wear down if he’s overused.

Of course not.

an opportunity to get rid of our garbage DE’s and pick up those guys, Ruskell would be out of his mind if he didn’t.

That's ridiculous!

While its true that we’re picking up the extra DL depth because of the weather, its not for the reason that you suggest. With Matt getting old, he’s got to find a way to keep his muscles warm on the sideline so that they don’t stiffen up and give him troubles. The plan is to cut the marginal DL open like Tauntauns so that Matt crawl inside them to get warm.
