Ask the Daily Norseman
Hey everyone, Eric here, a co-writer over at the Vikings' SB Nation blog the Daily Norseman. I thought I'd stop over to see if you guys had any questions about Sunday's game from a Viking fan's perspective. It can be about specific players both old (Favre) and young (Harvin), strategies, tendencies, or just about anything else that's on your mind. Me and the other writers (and probably a few regular DN commenters) will check here periodically throughout the next few days to give you some feedback. I'm hoping for a good, hard-fought, injury-free game on Sunday--but before we get started, I have a question for you:
A place to bury strangers.

I felt like AP could have been a good pass catching RB his rookie year,
how come he hasn’t done more catching the ball? I know Taylor is pretty good at it, but it seems like he could do a lot of damage YAC (the only nit I could possibly pick with Peterson).
When the Vikings stole, I mean signed, Hutchinson, I though that their offensive line mirrored the Seahawks of 2005. Hutchinson at LG, a giant and talented McKinnie at LT (not Walter, but no one is), and a good veteran center. How is the rest of the line, and has the line meshed now that they’ve presumably been together for some time (not sure if they have)?
How is that the team with arguably the best OL and the best DL also has a media darling in Favre and the best player regardless of position in Adrian Peterson? It seems like someone has to be cheap.
Who is the most underrated starter on the Vikings (excluding Shiancoe, since I feel like he’s a pretty good TE)?
How has Percy Harvin’s attitude been? I felt during the draft that he would be Reggie Bush, except 80% pass 20% rush (and 100% KR and PR), and he’s certainly proven that he’s in the upper echelons in terms of pure talent in the NFL.
What are your feelings on Tavaris Jackson and Sage Rosenfels? Trade them in the offseason?

Hrm
I think Chester is a better blocker and a better pass catcher than AD is currently. Because of that AD’s reps on recievign downs are a bit light which might be one of the reasons he’s never really caught on to the passing game (terrible pun). However, he has been working on it in the off season so he’s starting to show more promise in that area.
Well Steve is a monster and thanks for training him up for us :D Actually our O Line is looking quite good this year. There were a couple of worries with two new people being worked in but Sully and Loadholt seem to be doing a great job so far, although Sully does tend to get greased by top end DT’s…
Minnesota has been lucky with Wilf the man has put a tremendous amount of money into the team and it is definitely showing this year. This was a huge improvement over McCombs who liked to go shopping for coaches at Wal-Mart…
Under rated starters I would probably say Rice. I think this year he’s showing he can be a number 1 receiver and truly coming into the season our WR’s were our sketchiest area. Berrian seems not to be able to quite live up to his hype, but thankfully Harvin and Rice have risen to the occasion.
That brings us to Harvin. His attitude has been great. I think he’s learning a lot from Favre and it’s looking like Favre is trusting him with a lot of good passes. The biggest thing I think he brings to the team (other than the kick returns) is the amazing amount of catches he get on third downs.
Hope that answered some of your questions.

Thoughts on Childress?
Underrated, and getting too much flak for nothing? Or not a great coach, and one of your bigger worries come playoff time?
by LantermanC on Nov 19, 2009 11:35 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Super worried
He’s got an eye for personell and with Spielman and Studwell has done a great job finding talent for our team. But in cluth areas he tends to make mistakes. I’ve never been all that happy with his two minute drill and I thank God we have Favre pretty much handling that now.
This is s big discussion for us as he’s looking to get an extension now. The team has gotten progressively better during his tenure but then they’ve also poured money into it. Until he shows me he can hang with the big dogs though the jury is still out on him (Since he hasn’t even won a play off game yet)
by Grime on Nov 19, 2009 11:39 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I didn't see the need for the extension now.
As you touched on, I’d like to see him win a playoff game or two before we hand him 4 more years and all that money. But he has improved the team’s record from year to year, and he’s helped with some of the drafts and acquisitions that created the great team we currently have.
As a coach, I believe he’s improving, but yes, I’m still very scared about the playoffs.
by ericj69 on Nov 20, 2009 7:03 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
He's getting better
AP is starting to catch a few here and there out of the backfield, and I couldn’t be happier. It makes the most sense if you think about it—just give him one guy to plow over instead of five and it makes him even more dangerous. His blocking still leaves a lot to be desired especially compared to Taylor, but it is improving. The coaches are trusting him to be in there on more third downs, which is a good sign.
As Grime said, our O-line has been doing well, especially with two younger guys starting in John Sullivan and Phil Loadholt. Not the Hogs of 2009 by any means, but they’ve improved protection as the year has gone on.
I also agree with Grime in saying that Rice is by far the most underrated. He could have taken the Harvin drafting as an insult, but instead he took it as a motivator. He has been simply amazing this year, especially as a deep threat. I’d say he’s our #1 especially with Berrian’s injury struggles, and that’s amazing since most of us were penciling in Rice as our #3.
Harvin has made me a little nervous with his various “sicknesses”, but his attitude on the team has been exemplary. He’s working hard and his chemistry with Favre shows.
As for T-Jax and Sage, I’m surprised that both of them are currently on the team. No matter what happens during the Annual Favre Offseason Extravaganza, I’d be really surprised if both of them were on the team next year. Personally, I hope Sage sticks around.

There was an article in the StarTrib about Adrian catching more
I took a quick look but didn’t see it. IIRC he’s caught about as many so far as all last year. His screen against the Slackers was the late dagger.

How did you guys feel about FOX grinding the whole "WE NEED A NICKNAME FOR THE VIKINGS' FRONT FOUR!!!!!" during last week's telecast?
I couldn’t believe they were going on and on and on about it (And, seriously, Tim Ryan? You liked “Shock and AWWE” the best?), but that could be because I’m not a Vikings fan.
What were your thoughts about that?

So how long do you guys think you'll get a good QB out of Favre?
Don’t get me wrong, I like Favre, first-ballot HoFer and everything, not exactly a class act but actions speak louder than worst and I follow football players for their performance on the field and not for their wrangler-selling capabilities or tearful retirements. The hype is enough to make me wish he fails but at least one can tune out the hype.
That said, it’s easy to forget how good Favre and the Jets looked at the beginning of last season. Not as good as Favre and the Vikes now, obv, but still damned good, and the hype was in full fury then too. But Favre, ironman or no, is still a 40-year old QB who relies more on his arm-strength than his smarts (though he’s become wilier over the years, thank the Walrus), and has been hot or cold throughout his career anyway.
Do you expect he’ll last the season?
Do you expect he’ll last into the post-season?
Do you want to see him back next year?

Favre
I think our biggest collective fear is that #4 will fade in the last quarter of the season – we’ve heard it a lot from our Packer friends… he tires out, he throws picks, he’s too old, washed up, and a Diva.
There are some on our board who remain convinced that #4 is the Anti-Christ and will do nothing but destroy our beloved team.
So far… #4 is proving all of his critics wrong and is having an MVP like year.
This is the best first half of a season in his long career!
We’ve been discussing some about how we think this will play out… will he be back next year? what if he wins a SB with us, then what? Would he stay on to coach, etc… I think for the most part we are all enjoying the ride for the moment, hoping against hope that he stays healthy and dreaming that he drives this team deep into the playoffs for a SB win.
Personally, I expect that he lasts the season and into post-season. This team is the team to beat in the NFC.
I would like to see him back next year – he’s brought a lot of enjoyment to the team AND a winning swagger.
I BELIEVE...

That's the thing though
So far… #4 is proving all of his critics wrong and is having an MVP like year.
No he hasn’t. As far as I know not a lot of people were calling him over the hill or just plain bad, and while his low interception rate is certainly not something many saw coming, I don’t think his critics generally predicted a bad first half. So who’s he proving wrong?
Only if he keeps driving strong will he prove his critics wrong. Part of me hopes he will because this Vikes team deserves a playoff run and Favre is a great player. Part of me hopes he won’t and the collapse is epic just so sportcasters can shut their Frithdamn gobs for a sec. A conflicting character, for sure.

Well a lot of people said...
that because he held out and didn’t practice he would have serious issues. Also that his bicep wasn’t fully healed. That his poor perfomance on the last half of the Jets season would continue and of course the big bad word that they all loved so much Schizm. Oh yeah and he’s an interception throwing machine.
The fade out in the second half of the year was aslo being mentioned but more as a back story to the rest. Of course now it has become THE story as he’s doing an excellent job.

Results based analysis, hello.
Doesn’t mean that Favre will fall apart later in the season, as we’ve seen so often happen.
by redwolf75 on Nov 19, 2009 6:05 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I didn't really do an end result analysis
I pointed out the failure of those who proclaimed that he was washed up.
He really hasn’t fallen apart later in the season “so often” although if you find it emotionally fulfilling, you can hope.
If you want to do a classic end result analysis, a common one is cost/benefit analysis. So far there are a multitude of benefits.

Comparing Favre’s first 9 games of this year and last year.
FAVRE with the Jets: 16 TDs, 12 INT, 8 Fumbles
FAVRE with the Vikings: 17 TDs, 3 INT, 1 Fumble
While his critics may not have predicted a bad first half, NO ONE predicted his monster season stats thus far. 107.5 Quarterback rating to lead the NFL.

by Grime on Nov 19, 2009 10:36 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
The one thing that amazes me
Is the lack of turnovers. Favre is accepting the fact that he doesn’t have to force things with so many weapons around him. Personally, I thought he was incapable of not being THE guy. He’s proven me wrong there.
But don’t worry, my guard is still very much up! I’m still half-waiting for that 4 INT stinker…I just hope it doesn’t come in the playoffs.

True, but Harvin cost the Vikings a 1st round pick.

Yep a first round pick
and looking back at history you can see that not all first round picks are good ones. Plus I will be happy with a great receiver just starting his career instead of one who is at his peak or a bit after. Also, I lost a bit of respect for Housh when he waffled with the reporter on wether or not he should have gone to the Vikes instead of the Hawks. Once you pick your team it’s time to stand up for them.
Honestly though you can have Housh and Burleson, we’ll keep Hutch :)

I wrote that post yesterday. We were definitely sore at the time, there’s no doubt about that. But I was more just having fun with enjoying how things turned out. Yeah, I probably ripped on Housh a bit too much, but most DN readers know that I like to rip on just about everyone a bit too much :)

That's a pretty sore piece, yeah
But what caught my eye; “Percy Harvin, the overwhelming favorite to win Rookie of the Year honors”
Really? I mean he’s had a solid rookie season so far and might make the Pro Bowl as a special teams player with some luck, but I think I’ve heard Brian Cushing come up in RotY debates more than Harvin, let alone Oher. It might well still be Harvin because at the end of the day the award-givers like offensive skill positions more than anything else, but I’m not sure where he is the “overwhelming favourite”.
by Vasilii on Nov 21, 2009 7:56 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Harvin
Being the favorite is openly discussed all over the place. Not really sure where you have may been hiding….
As for Cushing, other than you, I have never heard his name even mentioned in that same sentence nevertheless that category. Seems to me he would need to dominate just one week and win the Rookie of the Week award before even being mentioned.
For the record, here is the list of weekly winners so far in 2009:
Week 1: Mark Sanchez, QB, New York Jets
Week 2: Mark Sanchez, QB, New York Jets
Week 3: Mark Sanchez, QB, New York Jets
Week 4: Knowshon Moreno, RB, Denver Broncos
Week 5: Knowshon Moreno, RB, Denver Broncos
Week 6: Clay Matthews, LB, Green Bay Packers
Week 7: Percy Harvin, WR, Minnesota Vikings
Week 8: Percy Harvin, WR, Minnesota Vikings
Week 9: Mike Wallace, WR, Pittsburgh Steelers

"All over the place," eh?
Link please.
And when I say “I’ve heard Brian Cushing come up more” I mean “I’ve heard him come up once”, as opposed to Harvin, who I haven’t really heard mention until now.
Cushing will likely win defensive rookie of the year. He and Oher are clearly the most valuable rookies so far, but if we’re talking (which I think you are since you mentioned the RotW awards) the Pepsi RotW and RotY, then yeah, that one is so tilted towards offensive skill positions that is kind of meaningless due to that part of its nature. I prefer the AP’s defensive/offensive Rookie of the Year, and it certainly is more prestigious, since Pepsi is just a fan-vote thing.
Can Harvin win the Pepsi schlomo, since I guess that’s what you’re talking about, and get a Special Teams Pro Bowl? Sure, and he probably deserves it, especially the KR Pro Bowl spot. Can he win the more meaningful (than Pepsi) offensive Rookie of the Year? Dunno, he doesn’t really play enough offense for that.
by Vasilii on Nov 22, 2009 8:37 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Look above...Wake up!!!!
Cushing isn’t mentioned. And it’s funny how now it is “once”. versus “some debates”. Which is it?
By the way, how many of the above votes did Cushing win? And it is seems to me, Cushing isn’t mentioned at all. Nice to just “speculate” and “run your mouth off without facts”…. Seems he can’t even win Rookie of the week, never the less ROY. How do you even try to make an argument there.
Again, Cushing hasn’t been mentioned except in your mind. Oher, might, might, might, win “defensive” ROY, but no way he wins all around ROY.

Staying at the Radisson in downtown Minneapolis this weekend
Any restaurants I need to check out? What’s the best bar scene for a Friday or Saturday night (hitting up UM vs. Minn-Duluth on Sat night so will be around the university)?

Welcome to Minny
If you’re at the Radisson, you’re right in the thick of it. If you’re looking for larger, louder, more clubby places, you’ll want to head a few blocks north and check out the bars around Hennepin and 1st Ave. If you’re looking for something slightly more laid back, then the bars on Nicollet Mall are probably a better fit. I won’t try and name any specific bars since there are ton in the area, but if you’re looking to pregame on Sunday, Sneaky Pete’s has a really good Bloody Mary bar and the light rail is right outside to give you a quick (albeit crowded) 3 minute trip to the Dome.
As for around campus, I recommend checking out the Seven Corners area, just a few blocks northeast of the Metrodome by campus. There are a half dozen bars within a square block of each other. Sally’s is right by the U of M football stadium and is always packed, although as a 28 year old I’d feel pretty old with that crowd.
Hope that helped!
