Brandon Spikes (Florida) attempts to gouge out eyes of Georgia RB
So Dez Bryant gets suspended a whole season because he lies about an innocent meeting with Deion Sanders, but Spikes sits half of a game for intentionally sticking his fingers through an opposing player's helmet (while he's defenseless on the ground) in an attempt to poke his eyes out?
Huh?

I don't want to be Mr. judgmental, but to me that's a
suspended for the rest of the season type thing. Nothing came of it, but if he blinded the guy or injured the guy, then I don’t see any other way around it. As Golic said, that’s worse than what LaGarret Blount did.

Interesting take.
I agree. Blount reacted in the heat of the moment with a punch. Eye gouging is much more deliberate.

THis stuff happens all the time, he just got caught.
Not that I’m making an excuse for him, it’s awful, and he should be suspended. Not for the season though, maybe a game or two. As far as I’m concerned, Blount didn’t do anything wrong, and should be playing. Bryant, should be reprimanded, no suspension.
The latter two examples are a definite example of NCAA getting too heavy-handed with these kids.
It's Great to be a Florida Gator!
They forgot El-ahrairah, for what use had they for tricks and cunning, living in the enemy's warren and paying his price?

it does happen all the time
but it shouldn’t. Blount should have been suspended but not for the season. Spikes was potentially blinding someone with his eye gouge. That is more serious than a punch to the face.
I have used the eye gouge before and if done right is very effective. Spikes shouldn’t be playing at all for the rest of the year.
This is a perfect example of the NCAA refs protecting the undefeated teams, like all the other penalties and missed calls in the IOWA game. Pure BS from the NCAA.

Complete and utter bullshit
How do you suspend a guy for half a game over the intentional blinding of a stricken opponent when Blount was suspended his senior year for a punch?
This Gator team has no class.

Suspending a guy for a half seems bizarre to me.
It seems a lot of Gator alums are embarrassed by the thing, which shows how bad the act was because usually fans are blinded by their faith in their players.

Yeah, its not the fact that eyegouging occured that bothers me so much
Its that it was so blatant and so publicized but the coaches didn’t really punish the player for doing it? You want your guys a little nasty, but there’s no way you can abide blatant and heavily publicized dirty play by one of your star players. A half-game suspension against 2-7 Vandy shows that the coaching staff cares more about winning than any sense or appearance of class.

They do have some fans that really really REALLY like their QB though.
