I love the Texans' regular home unis. Why the hell are they wearing their Battle Reds tonight?

Since I like playing with Vince Young, go Titans?
Though I do hope Schaub throws for 300 yards and 3 tds.

Can we combine Cushing and Curry

Hey fellas
Did you hear Mora’s comments (here) on Aaron Curry and his inconsistent improvement. He said that He was taking more off of Curry and letting him learn the role of a 1st and second down LB first, when he gets that they’ll add more. I think that’s a good idea. Thoughts?
by DJ C-Raig on Nov 23, 2009 5:51 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
I did read that and I don't like it.
As unsure and hesitant as he appears to be out there at times, I think he needs to stay out there and have less asked of him. Just allow him to fly around and hit people. It’s probably no the most sound coaching philosophy, but he’s in his own head right now and a “demotion” could exaggerate that.
I'm gonna go calm submissive on your ass.
by Dukeshire on Nov 23, 2009 5:56 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, I see the truth in what you're saying
But is it also possible that getting beat so much would get in his head too? Or maybe that it is better to get great and fundamentals and then add on coverage downs, rather than just saying “learn everything”, kind of like how you group things when you memorize them rather than trying brute memorization?
Mora also said he doesn’t want to play rookies just to give them XP, but wants to play the players that give the best chance of winning. I agree with this, because I love winning, and because I understand that it is 1.) A drug that football teams need to survive, and 2.) the only currency accepted in the NFL. But I don’t agree with it because I want us to be a better team next year, and XP now will probably help that.
by DJ C-Raig on Nov 23, 2009 6:01 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I love winning too, lol.
And you’re right, it’s a difficult balance to reach. You don’t want to shatter a players confidence, so I understand where you’re coming from. I guess the question is whether he is struggling because he hasn’t mastered his assignments and is thinking his way through plays. Or if he’s overmatched physically at this level, at the moment. If it’s a matter of assignment, I say let him play per my previous post. If it’s an ability issue, then I would agree to reduce his time and put him in those situations where he would have a high probability of success to build his confidence.
I'm gonna go calm submissive on your ass.

In general it seems like teams are trying a bit more original plays this year
(I admit, as I do often, that I’m newish to the NFL, only watching for 6 years, so I have limited perspective)
You have the wildcat, all the variants of it, even the “Seneca package”.
Definitely more fun to watch.
by GarethLewin on Nov 23, 2009 6:26 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
That's kind of how the NFL works
everyone will say a certain tactic won’t work, then one team will try it and have success with it and people will call it a gimmick but pretty soon everyone will have some variation on it.
I wonder how long it will take Oregon and West Virginia/Michigan’s spread running styles to proliferate to the NFL. I guess they already sort of are.

The fact that Fisher wait until they were 0-6 to make this switch should be enough to put him on the hot seat.

Vince put up ugly stats but the team won games and made the playoffs, so he earned a reputation as being a QB who “just wins games” despite the fact that in most of those games the team won IN SPITE of his efforts.
So I feel like tonight will be one of those games where he will be ugly but maybe make a couple of plays after the defense/Chris Johnson do something more important to help the team win.

I was a bit inebriated when I had it, but usually I don’t review if I know I’m too drunk to give a fair review. It’s 8.5%, so it’ll get ya drunk. I’ll skip all the aroma and mouthfeel stuff and just copy and paste my flavor review: “Spicy for certain, but not too strong, especially for a beer that is 8.5%. Slight hints of fruits but mostly just a strong malt. Almost burns the tongue, but in a good way.”

Football truism
maybe not true. I think, like most sports, the more extreme the physical requirements, the higher the replacement value.
by John Morgan on Nov 23, 2009 7:59 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
That's certainly true with respect to the availability of talent at that position.
However, transcendent is transcendent and you’re more likely to find that out of a larger pool of candidates.

He is not yet what he can become.
by John Morgan on Nov 23, 2009 8:03 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
To me, guys always show at least flashes of what they can become in their earlier incarnations.
Oden has always been bigger and stronger. He’s solid defensively, but he’ll have to be more than Theo Ratliff to measure up. I saw tons of Oden in college (Northwestern guarded him with a 6’6" kid from Highland Park) and never saw the offensive understanding that makes a good post player.
by abender20 on Nov 23, 2009 8:07 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Oden may turn out to be a pretty darned good NBA player.
Durant may teabag millions on his way to the Hall of Fame
by abender20 on Nov 23, 2009 7:42 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Plus humans that large are just always going to be massive injury risks.
I’d rather have the transcendent and versatile small forward and a more replacement level center (Brendan Haywood?) than Dwight Howard and Thaddeus Young.

My only concern about Oden is the long term health of his knees
Other than that, I would still select Oden over Durant.
by John Morgan on Nov 23, 2009 7:46 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
The way the game is officiated these days, the advantage goes to perimeter players.
Unless you’re looking at someone truly special like Duncan, I take Durant.

Most champions have good big men. Garnett transformed the Celtics. The Lakers won with a healthy Bynum—were transformed by trading for Gasol.

Not yet
but he was supposed to be better and could be. Last season he was recovering from microfracture and so this is like a second rookie season as he relearns his body. People have given up on Oden prematurely.
by John Morgan on Nov 23, 2009 8:01 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Well I was never that high on Oden to begin with
To your point above about availability of talent I think that Oden can be one of the best centers in the league. I think Durant can be one of the best swing men in the league. Being better than guys like Marion and Jefferson and Jackson means a lot more than being better than Hawes, Perkins and modern day Shaq.
