OTFP: Carl Sagan Edition
Sorry I've been rather remiss about putting these up, the last several weeks of school have been absolutely brutal. But hey, finals over and it's three weeks in lazytown.
Anyhoo, here's your off-topic fanpost until we get tired of it and replace it. General reminders are to follow the commenting guidelines, give Seahawks discussion their own fanpost, and remain civil.
So what should you all talk about? Hell if I know. Here's a music video
Other potential topics of discussion:
- Current favorite band?
- Current favorite song?
- Carl Sagan or Neil deGrasse Tyson?
- Favorite Almost Live sketch?
- Favorite TV show that was canceled too soon?

Such an awesome video.

All I want for Christmas is Joe Haden, Eric Berry, and Nandamukong Suh in Seahawks blue.
Man
Carl Sagan is so wonderful!
As far as favorite TV shows that were canceled too early, for me it has to be Undeclared or Freaks and Geeks. Both would be smash hits now, but they came too early, before awkward humor was the hot topic.
Threshold was a good show that got canned too early.

Favorite Band: Steely Dan
Favorite Song: Deacon Blues
Anyone got favorite Christmas Songs?
ME! BANE!
My own answers
Current favorite band: The Faunts
Current favorite song: M4 Part II
Egghead: Sagan
Almost Live sketch: Cops in Ballard
TV show canned too soon: The Critic
Cops in Ballard was one of the best.
And The Critic would be mine also. To me it’s like what Family Guy strived to be but just didn’t quite get what made The Critic work.

Granted I was too young to remember when The Critic was on the air, but I do own it on DVD!
Wonderful voice cast, wonderful writing. It was a great show that just never got a chance to succeed. ABC definitely wasn’t the right network for it, and the second season with FOX featured the usual schedule mishandling.
Well I could talk about Almost Live sketches for about 48 consecutive hours
East-Side Story is probably my favorite sketch. “Clinique girl…clinique girl…”
My two favorite recurring sketches were Nature Walk with Chuck and Uncle Fran’s Musical Forest.
As a kid I loved Billy Kwan.
Oh yeah Billy Kwan and the High Fivin White Guys

I miss good Saturday Night Live
I was watching old reruns of Mad TV yesterday and thought about the good old days when SNL was funny, ie Sandler, Spade, Farly, Hartman, even back further when it was Belushi, Radner, Chase, Akroyd, Murphy, Piscepoe, etc.
Why does the writing all center around celebrity spoof? Can’t people write things that are true to the world and actually funny. I think what’s really missing from their lineup of comedic actors is a top notch physical comedic presence like Chris Farly.
I think a lot of whats missing in today’s movies shows how much the industry really misses a guy like Chris Farly.
Note: didn’t really mean for this to sound like a Chris Farly love fest, as it may seem.
I actually loved Phil Hartman.

Favorite TV show that was canceled too soon?
Got a ton of these. But in particular, Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace, Now & Again and Black Books, though I’m unsure if the last one was canceled. Regardless, it had a good run, as opposed to the two first which both had half a season, and I love both of ’em.
I am going to digress completely
And post a link to the greatest object you will have seen since watching Sagan break it down.
The band I've been listening to the most lately is Hurt.
Tough to choose one song. Anything from Hurt, The Killer and the Star, or Kings of Leon it seems lately.
Almost Live Sketch: Billy Kwan, my favorite as a kid, still my favorite now.
And Carl Sagan wins.
Also a die-hard Hawks fan.
Best show cancelled too soon
has to be Freaks and Geeks. About a decade ahead of its time. But I will throw Arrested Development in there too. It had a pretty good run, but it should have stayed around longer.
Word
Freaks and Geeks along with Undeclared were too good for television, I’m a firm believer they’d be smash hits in this time period.

I wanted to say Arrested Devlopment but couldn't remember if it was cancelled or they just disbanded.
I heard a while back however there would be an AD movie.

Yep, it was cancelled
Supposedly there is a movie now in the works because Michael Cera was the last cast member to agree to do it.

Freaks and Geeks for sure.
It’s a crime that show was canceled after only one season.

30 comments and nobody has mentioned Firefly yet?
Shame on you people.
Is that the light at the end of the tunnel, or the headlights of an oncoming train?
Ah, Firefly. So, so awesome.

Best TV Show cancelled too soon that isn't Firefly: Dead Like Me
I kinda have a thing for Ellen Muth.
Favorite Band right now: Black rebel motor cycle club. Favorite song right now is something Christmas-y, maybe Christmas Wrapping.
Oh yeah, Dead Like Me
:(
Particularly loved Mandy Patinkin in it. Muth was great, but Patinkin made that show. Much of a reason why the film wasn’t that good.

I keep meaning to check out this show.
But there’s a bunch of others on that list too. Too many shows, way too little time.

Didn't even read this comment,
but I’m glad others agree about Dead like Me. Any show based in Seattle is awesome (yes even the 4400), and any show with Mandy Patinkin is awesome.
This is driving me absolutely nuts,
even though I know it’s just repeating itself, I keep waiting for the stupid cat to give up.

Does anyone else enjoy watching Myth Busters on Discovery?
I don’t get much American TV over here, so I eat up what I can get my hands on. Maybe it’s like the first glass of water you drink on a scorching day (it’s always the best glass of water you ever drank)… but I find myself actually making time to watch it lately.
Bring Your Game, Leave Your Name.
Yeah, it's a cool show.
Not sure about the guy’s beret though. It’s pretty ridiculous.

I like how excited they get about certain things.
Mostly when they are blowing stuff up or working with the dummie.
I liked the show better when it was just the two of them though. The new addition of younger people just doesn’t make it the same as before.

Given that this is a football blog,
I can’t believe no one has mentioned Playmakers. I loved that show, it got great reviews, great ratings, was touted as realistic by Neon Deion, but the NFL had to kill it terrible. I was just thinking about this a couple of weeks ago and bought the season off eBay – still good after a few years.

Two a Days on MTV was kinda cool
until they started focusing on the players’ personal lives rather than football.

The Black Donnellys.
I was PISSED when they called that one. It was fun, funny, and brought me to Olivia Wilde among other things. Maybe it would have never “gotten there” but it had serious promise.
Favorite song? I don’t know. But how about a song I can’t stop watching… so many drugs, and yet so musically THERE this particular day. Seriously epic, and I love it. Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. You HAVE to watch this.

Reading Rainbow
Because I don’t want to have to buy all the seasons on DVD for my daughter to enjoy Lamar.
Favorite song, Disconnected by Face to Face. They had great lyrics for a punk/alternative band.

Anybody seen the Road yet?
I think I’m going to watch it tonight, but I haven’t read the book. I’m always unsure of whether to read the book first or not.
Saw it couple weeks ago.
It’s bleak without being overwhelmingly depressing. Even though I had read the book, it was still pretty intense. Viggo’s amazing as well. I guess what I’m trying to say is it’s really good.

Hooray!
NASA’s getting a budget boost!
It’s not quite the $3 billion initially requested, but it’s a start. Since it’s short of that mark, it’s all but official that the shuttle program needs to be terminated yesterday.
This song has been in my head
all day long.

That's the second-best song I've ever heard which features Stephen Hawking.
Pink Floyd’s “Keep Talking” is the first.
Band of the moment: The Antlers.
Song of the moment: “Wordless Chorus” by My Morning Jacket.
Never really seen much of Sagan, but his reputation alone wins (especially with the video above). Don’t get me wrong, I loves me some Neil DeGrasse Tyson, but how can he compete?
Don’t remember much Almost Live.
Cancelled too soon: The Critic and Arrested Development.
Did you listen to my link?
Being a My Morning Jacket fan, you should like Home by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes. Their performance on Letterman was just awesome… watch it.
Love The Division Bell, just an epic, beautiful album.

Yeah, dug it.
I also really like the first two parts of the epic film that they have up on YouTube.
The Division Bell is a bit of an odd duck. Every so often I’ll listen to it start to finish and remember how good it is (“High Hopes” is an incredible finish), but it gets overshadowed by the strength of their 70s albums, and rightfully so. I love Roger Waters’ songwriting so much that TDB always leaves me pleasantly surprised by its strength. (I’m a wee bit obsessed with The Floyd. Brilliant, brilliant musicians.)
Well said.
I haven’t watch the youtube film if it is on the division bell, unless it is the one that is older… i watched a couple parts of one and it is like the entire floyd story. is that it?
Division Bell is way way underrated. It isn’t Dark Side or the Wall, but I still love it.
My favorite by the way is by far wish you were here…

The Antlers remind me a little of the Eels...
only apparently less heavily produced.

I can see the Eels comparison musically, but not vocally.
I want to go see The Antlers tonight, but they’re sold out and people are being dicks and marking up the tickets more than twice what they paid. Guess I’ll have to wait until they come back with Editors in February.
Anybody have any reassuring Lasik stories to share?
I’m going in for PRK in a couple days and am officially nervous about getting my eyeball’s epithelial cells lasered off.
This is how I feel.
Not to freak you out nate but I have a uncle that was getting laser throat surgery. And the laser malfunctioned and burnt out his esophagus. He now has a feeding tube.

My OT
Current favorite band?
Noah and the Whale, kind of a British Folk band.
Current favorite song?
Noah and the Whale – The First days of Spring. A brilliant song that makes me wish I never quit the violin.
Carl Sagan or Neil deGrasse Tyson?
Never heard of either guy.
Favorite Almost Live sketch?
Never heard of Almost Live.
Favorite TV show that was canceled too soon?
Freaks and Geeks or Wonderfalls, Dead like Me is also good as is Firefly, and both had movies made as well.
How have you never heard of almost live?

If you aren't old enough or not from the PNW originally, you likely wouldn't have.
Personally, I remember the show being great when I was really young, but as I got older either the show got worse or my tastes changed or something. Of course it may have been, like Python, that it would have come back around for me later on… or not.

Hm, I just wiki'ed it.
I usually go to bed early. Also it doesn’t seem to be my type of show since I’ve never really watched any late night shows (Letterman, SNL, Leno, Conan, etc).
Also, I didn’t have cable before 1999, so I was mainly stuck with shows like Seinfeld and Friends.
