Is it wrong that I'm still too bummed about the Seahawks to watch another team play?
Sam Bradford, future Seattle Seahawk.
nope
I’m planning on enjoying Borderlands tonight instead of watching football.

I am in need
Watched the Army-Navy game, which was bad of an A-N game, and was too numb for the afternoon game.
He's got the "fire."
and good lord we need it.
by Hawkhammer19 on Dec 13, 2009 5:30 PM PST up reply actions
Not sure who's around
but that pass by McNabb is a great example of a receiver that is not wide open but a target because McNabb can zip it in there.
You don't think?
He can still uncork some absolute rockets down field.
Really no.
It’s still very good, but there’s a handful of better arms I can think of right of the top of my head: Stafford, Flacco, Cutler, maybe Henne.
The touch+arm strength of McNabb should be on display tonight.
He makes some awe-inspiring throws.
This.
He's good for a few really awful throws too
He still rockets balls into the ground from time to time
I try to save the nice comments until I know they are totally done
I think that’s basic respect. Competitors hate being patronized.
I hated watching Gary Payton in his last couple of seasons with the Sonics.
Sam Bradford, future Seattle Seahawk.

In the sense that I hated to see him deteriorate before my very eyes
And he was still my favorite player in the league. Hell, of all time. Just because of his competitiveness
Sam Bradford, future Seattle Seahawk.

Yep
That’s EXACTLY how I feel about Hasslebeck. For years Hasslebeck has been my favorite QB. And it’s just so sad to see him perform like this. Yes I know he is giving his all, but there just isn’t much there anymore.
Yeah, I still haven't forgotten watching Payton get owned by Tony Parker.
Sam Bradford, future Seattle Seahawk.

Exactly
Although he kind of killed them in the NFC championship game last year. Lovable for the most part.
I still wish he was a Seahawk

Still trying to understand...
Why they didn’t resign him and kept Duckett
Weaver wouldn't be integrated well in Knapp's offense
Plus, he wanted runningback money.
by aerozeppelin on Dec 13, 2009 6:41 PM PST up reply actions
Or so was the thinking
Weaver actually looks like a natural for Knapp. I think the reason was that the team wanted to keep Schmitt and sign Grifftith.
Don't know anymore
He can block like a mug. Maybe he’s a bonehead. Or maybe he messed with Knapp’s fullback.
Ridiculous.
No one will be sacking McNabb in the end zone.
People gave the Hawks a lot of crap for "something named Celek" going off
but he’s pretty good and he excels at catching the ball. I think he was one of FO’s projected break out players
Speaking of money
Does B. Marshall take the money and run? Or stay with Denver?
I remember having no clue who he was, but he's been outstanding.
FO had him as one their top 25 prospects taken after round 3 (I think). Weaver was also in the top 25, as was Courtney Taylor.
SEA!
He's getting more and more consistent as the years go by
He’s legitimately a good quarterback this year.
In theory, this is what Seattle wants to do on offense
allow a few short completions, but eventually force the offense into third and long by stuffing a couple runs.
I hate to say it, but I'm actually curious to see what Bradley/Quinn would do with the coverages and what not if Mora were gone.
SEA!
I think Wilson could
He tackles well and fights through traffic. It looks like he has functional strength.
I wonder how much Mora really affects the defensive playcalling.
by Hawkhammer19 on Dec 13, 2009 5:53 PM PST up reply actions
I guess the question is really
whether Bradley would do a better job on his own
by Hawkhammer19 on Dec 13, 2009 5:56 PM PST up reply actions
He's not the DC
So he doesn’t call the plays, Bradley does, but he probably has veto power that’s used mostly on 3rd and 4th down. But I’m sure if Cowher was coaching he would come with a magical formula to get a great pass rush out of a bunch of scrubs on the d line.
by Badmotostinkfinger on Dec 13, 2009 5:59 PM PST up reply actions
Well being the DC doesn't mean he calls all the plays.
Gil Haskell was the OC here for a long time and Holmgren still called the plays. Not sure what the Cowher comment is about, I don’t want him.
SEA!
I've never been under the impression that Mora calls the plays
Maybe he does, but I’ve never heard that the way I did about Holmgren.
by Badmotostinkfinger on Dec 13, 2009 6:08 PM PST up reply actions
Neither Bradley nor Quinn are that connected to Mora
but it is more than likely the whole staff is cleared out.
It would be something different
Part of power of changing staff is that new coaches are not in love with the same players, schemes and decision making.
Like
Singletary is maybe not a better coach than Nolan, but he knew how to simplify and let the talent work.
but we can't really know that wouldn't be the case with Quinn
he doesn’t have any influence on play calling from what i understand
by Hawkhammer19 on Dec 13, 2009 5:59 PM PST up reply actions
You mean like Quinn calling plays?
I agree it will be a lab from here on. That makes me wonder if Mora could be fired this week.

by Carl Shinyama on Dec 13, 2009 6:09 PM PST up reply actions
Firing Mora mid-season doesn't make a whole lot of sense, though.
The GM is interim and the season is almost over.
So let Quinn audition for the job.
Just like Webster is auditioning for GM.
by Hawkhammer19 on Dec 13, 2009 6:07 PM PST up reply actions
If we can conclude that Mora will not return
then it makes sense to maybe experiment with a possible replacement like Quinn.
by Hawkhammer19 on Dec 13, 2009 6:08 PM PST up reply actions
We did see the Mariners fire McLaren with an interm GM.
I don’t think he’s gonna be fired, but it is possible. Maybe they really like Quinn or something and want to see what he does as the head coach.
SEA!
I think there's a foul cloud over the VMAC too
Watching a coach contort and blame and yell does a losing team no good. I remember everyone praised Marinelli during the 0-16 season, and they praised him because he refused to call out his guys and always shouldered the blame.
Agreed
I don’t think I’d consider firing Mora if he was a class act.
by Hawkhammer19 on Dec 13, 2009 6:13 PM PST up reply actions
But he's not
and we do have a respectable back-up option. It’s worth considering but this would be the week to do it if we do.
by Hawkhammer19 on Dec 13, 2009 6:14 PM PST up reply actions
Hoody handled things a little differently this week
Not a good leader?
by Badmotostinkfinger on Dec 13, 2009 6:14 PM PST up reply actions
I don't watch enough of Belichick to have an opinion.
But I’ve been in plenty of leadership positions and I don’t think calling guys out is ever good leadership.
The screaming does nothing for me
But i’ve heard Hawk fans say they want him to be more emotional and then they bitch when he is.
It doesn’t matter to me, it didn’t matter to Bill Walsh or Tony Dungy and it doesn’t matter to Hoody or Reid.
But I haven’t seen enough to truly judge Mora. This team sucks, and that’s mostly on Ruskell. I just don’t like the idea of replacing him after one season, more of a Redskins or Raiders move to me.
by Badmotostinkfinger on Dec 13, 2009 6:23 PM PST up reply actions
I think that was more a Ruskell/Holmgren thing
but he did feed Spencer and Sims to the dogs. For most of his career, and with his guys, he took the lumps.
I cringe every time
I see the Kerney-Terrill-Cole-Tapp rotation… a one man pass rush.
by Hawkhammer19 on Dec 13, 2009 6:01 PM PST up reply actions
Knapp would be gone for sure.
Bradley and Quinn might have a fighters chance to stay on, if they wanted to.
SEA!
That's too bad, because Mora is the one who should be thrown out.
His habit of throwing parts of this team under the bus is really starting to piss me off. First it was Mare, now it’s the o-line’s fault that Hasselbeck is useless.

Old Eli would:
Get into bad down and distance when the run game fails and flick something errant, maybe towards a defender.
New Eli will..?
I don't like that he's good
I preferred him being bad and the object of my derision
I wouldn't go that far
I’m not sure if it’s something to start a crusade about. I’m fine with Mora contorting his way into the sunset.
That play reminds me.
Seneca Wallace is an idiot
That play in particular pissed me off.
I was like, “The fuck you didn’t throw that away for???”

by Carl Shinyama on Dec 13, 2009 6:28 PM PST up reply actions
Every week I expect to see him finally throw it away
and every week I’m disappointed.
by Hawkhammer19 on Dec 13, 2009 6:24 PM PST up reply actions
I have been pretty quiet about this throughout the season, but I've been nearly irate with the staff for their handling of players.
Kerney, Cole, and Terrill play way too much, the use of Seneca, etc. Also, I’m leaning more heavily toward Forsett being the superior back, yet Jones gets the lion’s share.
I thought he was trying to cater to the vision that his coaches had, rather than sticking with his philosophy of high-motor players
Sam Bradford, future Seattle Seahawk.
by Carl Shinyama on Dec 13, 2009 6:30 PM PST up reply actions
Theres another issue with the handling of players
Moving Redding to end, asking Tapp to bulk up and having Mebane slim down to play the 3. Why did they screw with good things?
Yuck
I hope we haven’t compromised Mebane’s potential by asking him to fluctuate his weight so much. Do you think he’ll return to the one okay?
by Hawkhammer19 on Dec 13, 2009 6:31 PM PST up reply actions
Sorry to return to this
but I feel like Mebane would be dynamic with McCoy.

Honestly, I can't fathom how a guy who has been in the league for 7 years still doesn't get it.
I never want to draw conclusions about things I don’t have the information to know, but I’d bet he’s dumb.

Anyone pay much attention to Shaun Cody for the Texans?
I want to pop that DVD in and watch what Cody is doing.
He made a nice run stop in the 1st quarter, on Jones I believe.
Think he beat Unger, could be wrong on that, though.

Seals my fate in fantasy
From 7-5 and a possible first round bye to 7-7 and out on the final day. I benched Schaub out of homerism and started McNabb.
Other team had DeSean Jackson and Adrian Peterson.
Oh well, life goes on…

I like the angles that Bradshaw takes.
He isn’t all that elusive, but he really marginalizes guys in creases.
I've always loved Bradshaw's running style.
Tough runner, good cuts, good top end speed. Plus something else about his run style that I can’t really pinpoint.
wondering if ...
Green man will be playing Flip cup afterwards. Flip, Flip. Flip Flipadelphia!
I wonder why Reid is so adaptable and Holmgren seemed so set in his ways?
No coincidence that even though Reid is a horrific game-manager, he still gets the contract extension. It helps that his QB hasn’t noticeably declined.
This.
Damn, Orakpo with 4 sacks
I know it’s against the Raiders, but is there any doubt this dude is going to be the DROTY?
Should be tight...Matthews has a lot of sacks, too.
I liked Maybin more than Orakpo. Orakpo benefits from playing on a better defensive line, but I’m honestly surprised he’s done this well right away.
This.
I also liked Maybin
but right now he has done absolutely nothing.

ESPN will cover it 7am till the MNF game tomorrow.
I was home sick for the Monday after the PAT’s gong for it on 4th and they literally covered that for 8 hours. I couldn’t stop watching because I had to see how long they could drag it out.

There would never be a touchdown
Under 50 yards
If I recall correctly, DVOA does not reward an 80-yard play all that much more than a 20 yard play
Since it values first downs over anything. Am I remembering this incorrectly?
It doesn't value first down over everything, per se
It just looks at the big picture and see that a lot the difference between a 40 yard pass and an 80 yard pass is field position.
But what it misses
is that the attributes of great teams are not necessarily the attributes of great players.
A little flaw enables motivation
and great flaws create the obsessive and sometimes the obsessively great.
Sure
most kids of our generation had it pretty good. I think we are a pretty well adjusted group, as a whole.
My sister and I have pretty similar capabilities.
She has always had lower self esteem and I’ve always been pretty self-satisfied. Her track – Darthmouth, UW Med, Harvard for residency. Her insecurities have been good for her.
My brother is a neo Nazi and his whereabouts are unknown by my family
and I’m probably not the most competent person to assess myself.
It wasn't so bad back in college when he couldn't back his shit up.
But then he never had a QB like McNabb at Cal.
[DELETED ZOMG NO POLITICS]
Now, I'm looking at DeSean Jackson and I'm having that weird guy sensation
“I think I could take him.”
But in reality, he would beat me within an inch of my life and tie me to his sled on wind sprints.
I hate to be pedantic
But I hate when announcers call handoffs to wide receivers ‘reverses’. It’s an end-around. There is no reversal of field. This bothers me, and I realize it is a little irrational.
I get angry about this too
Brent Musburger is one of the few announcers who gets this call correct most of the time.
[DELETED ZOMG NO POLITICS]
I think I'll just never be happy with a coaching staff
I found myself pondering Marshall after posting this and I’m ashamed of myself.

He would have been a pretty good complement to Forcett. Oh well.

So, virtually every statistical analyst believes the passing game is more valuable than the run game
in fact, Brian Burke told me that run plays, net, have a negative win probability, and the Seahawks hire coaches the preach running game on both sides of the ball to complement their linebacker crazed GM.
by John Morgan on Dec 13, 2009 8:20 PM PST reply actions 1 recs
Yeah this is why I'm ok with Ruskell not getting re-signed
I hear the Eagles GM has been interviewing for other GM spots….
But sometimes I think the league is a pendulum and there's something to be said for having unpopular tastes.
It'd be interesting to talk to him about his linebacker fetish
I wonder if there was an underlying philosophy to that or if he just had amazing linebacker talent keep falling into his lap.
He was really good at picking them.
Maybe he just wanted to show off his skill at it, like a comedian that keeps using the one good joke he has.
SEA!
Well he hit gold with Tatupu and Hill
But Curry and Peterson were kind of no brainers. The best players available happened to be linebackers. I mean, imagine 05 goes differently and instead of Burly and Peterson he gets his first choices and winds up with Abraham and Hutch.
I think we need a competent QB
Or at least one that isn’t old.
The argument I keep hearing about retaining him is “who is going to replace him and be better?” and it’s annoying.

They aren’t too far off but, like Mora, refuse to put some of the blame on Hasselbeck.

Hasselbeck is gettin’ old, yes. Everybody admits as much, even Holmgren. I can’t say I agree with Holmy that he’s got 4 good years left, but I can say that you’d be hard pressed to find a better replacement right this minute.
Anybody who thinks McCoy (or Tebow, or Bradford) is gonna step in and be better than Matt right out of the gate is kidding themselves.
And I read Morgan’s article on bringing in Jason Campbell. He’s in for a pretty rude awakening if he thinks that will fix anything, barring the addition of significantly more talent on offense.
Not sure they get it but hey different opinions make discussion fun.
ME! BANE!
Heh, that's funny.
No one thinks McCoy or whoever would be better right away, rookie QB’s struggle and we’re willing to go through the process.
Plus, I don’t think John or anyone has said Campbell will fix everything, just a potential cheap stop-gap that could have some decent upside.
